Relationship of stress response, coping and lifestyle with premenstrual syndrome in female university athletes: A structural equation modeling

To date, there has been no comprehensive study on the relationship of stress response, coping and lifestyle (e.g., diet, exercise habits, and sleeping habits) with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) for female athletes. This study aimed to examine this relationship. We used a web questionnaire to acquire the required data from Japanese female university athletes. Based on structural equation modeling, we used the PMS score as an outcome and examined its relationship to stress response, emotion-focused coping, dietary intake, amount of exercise in club activities surveyed by club unit, and sleeping time. Our study included 257 subjects (average age, 20 years). The results showed that the stress response was a direct factor in the PMS score (standardized coefficient:.63). Emotion-focused coping and dietary intake were associated with PMS scores through stress response (-.26 and -.27, respectively). Emotion-focused coping was also associated with the dietary intake (.19). Factors associated with emotion-focused coping were amount of exercise (.22) and sleeping time (.27). The amount of exercise was associated with sleeping time (-.26). These results suggest that avoiding stressors, enhancing emotion-focused coping, reducing the stress response by maintaining a balanced and sufficient diet, performing an appropriate amount of exercise, and improving sleep habits may be effective in managing PMS.

A community-wide intervention to promote physical activity: A five-year quasi-experimental study

Evidence on the effects of a community-wide intervention (CWI) on population-level physical activity (PA), especially in the long term, is limited. Therefore, we evaluated the five-year effect of CWI on promoting PA through information dissemination, education, and community support primarily targeting older adults, by incorporating Japanese guidelines, in Fujisawa City, from 2013. To assess the effect of the whole-city intervention, we distributed questionnaires in 2013, 2015, and 2018 to three independent random samples of 3,000 community-dwelling adults (aged ≥ 20 years) using a quasi-experimental study design. Three separate samples responded to the survey (41% at baseline, 46% at the two-year mark, and 48% at the five-year follow-up). The primary outcome was change in PA participation. At the five-year follow-up, PA (median: 120 minutes/day) was significantly higher than at baseline (86 minutes/day) and the two-year follow-up (90 minutes/day). The results of the multivariate analysis indicated that PA among older adults—the primary target population of the CWI—increased significantly at the five-year follow-up, compared to those aged 20–64 (mean difference of change between groups: 14.7 minutes/day, P= 0.029). Among older adults, PA was significantly lower in those with poorer perceived economic status than in their more well-off counterparts at the two-year follow-up (P= 0.003); however, there was no significant difference at the five-year follow-up (P= 1.000). There was a positive interaction between group and period (mean difference of change between groups: 40.9 minutes/day, P= 0.001). In conclusion, the five-year CWI targeting older adults, incorporating national guidelines, improved population-level PA.

Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) is a popular topic model for extracting common patterns from discrete datasets. It is extended to the pachinko allocation model (PAM) with a hierarchical topic structure. This paper presents a combination meal allocation (CMA) model, which is a further enhanced topic model from the PAM that has both hierarchical categories and hierarchical topics. We consider count datasets in multiway arrays, i.e., tensors, and introduce a set of topics to each mode of the tensors. The topics in each mode are interpreted as patterns in the topics and categories in the next mode. Despite there being a vast number of combinations in multilevel categories, our model provides simple and interpretable patterns by sharing the topics in each mode. Latent topics and their membership are estimated using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. We apply the proposed model to step-count data recorded by activity monitors to extract some common activity patterns exhibited by the users. Our model identifies four daily patterns of ambulatory activities (commuting, daytime, nighttime, and early-bird activities) as sub-topics, and six weekly activity patterns as super-topics. We also investigate how the amount of activity in each pattern dynamically affects body weight changes.

Heating use and sedentary behavior and physical activity at home among adults in winter: a cross-sectional analysis of the nationwide Smart Wellness Housing Survey in Japan

Objective: This study examined the association between use of heating and sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) at home among Japanese adults in winter.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from November to April from 2014 to 2017. Participants (n=3,874) who intended to conduct insulation retrofitting were recruited by construction companies from 46 prefectures excluding Okinawa Prefecture and wore an accelerometer on their waist for 2 weeks. The association between heating use and log-transformed SB and PA at home was analyzed using a sex-stratified multilevel model (random-intercept model) with 3 levels; day-level variables (e.g., indoor temperature and log-transformed accelerometer wear time as an offset), nested within individual-level (e.g., age and body mass index), and nested within household-level (e.g., household income, number of housemates). The degree of association with the dependent variable was given by exponential transforming the unstandardized regression coefficient.Results: Data from 3,482 participants were analyzed. In the multilevel model, not using a kotatsu was associated with about 2% shorter SB time [men: exp(B)=0.98, p=0.022; women: exp(B)=0.98, p=0.020], an about 10% greater number of breaks in SB time [men: exp(B)=1.10, p=0.001; women: exp(B)=1.11, p<0.001], and 5-7% greater PA [men: exp(B)=1.07, p=0.005; women: exp(B)=1.05, p=0.012] than using a kotatsu. Heating the changing room was also related to shorter SB time, a greater number of breaks in SB time and greater PA in men and women.Conclusions: Not using a kotatsu and heating the changing room were associated with shorter SB and greater PA at home. Warming by heating the entire home, rather than partially heating just the living room, may decrease SB and increase PA in winter.

A descriptive epidemiological study of injuries and illnesses over an 8-year period in a Japanese university rugby football team

Objective: To clarify the incidence rates of sports injuries, including those due to trauma, overuse, and diseases, a descriptive epidemiological study was conducted in players from the Keio University rugby football club. Methods: The study participants were 368 players who belonged to the Keio University rugby football club from April 2011 through December 2018 (1,049 players/year). We analyzed the incidence per practice day and game, by clinical department category and disease classification, and by unplayable period and severity of the sports injury and disease that led to leave from practice and game during the study period. In addition, we analyzed the incidence of sports injuries and diseases by body part affected, month of onset, orthopedic and neurosurgical disease statuses, and year and month of onset of internal diseases according to clinical department and disease classification. Results: The incidence of sports injuries and diseases was 1.67 cases/player overall, 1.07 cases/player in the orthopedic diseases, 0.25 case/player in the internal diseases, and 0.24 case/player in the neurosurgical diseases (all concussions) over 8 years. The incidence rates per practice day and game were 0.41 and 1.18 cases, respectively. The conditions with the highest incidence rates were as follows: orthopedic diseases of the lower limb, 45%; ligament injuries, 46%; common cold, 40% of all internal diseases; and seasonal and annual cases of gastroenteritis, 35%. Conclusion: This study shows that many cases of ligament injuries of the lower limb were treated as orthopedic diseases; and common cold and gastroenteritis, as internal diseases. All cases of concussion were treated as neurosurgical diseases. Given these facts, steps must be taken to secure the duration of a play.

In November 2020, the International Society for Physical Activity and Health (ISPAH) published “Eight Investments That Work for Physical Activity". This document was updated from ISPAH's 2011 publication: ”Non Communicable Disease Prevention: Investments That Work for Physical Activity (2011)” following the “Toronto Charter on Physical Activity: A Global Call for Action” published in 2010. Along with the “WHO Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018-2030”, this is useful as guidance for promoting physical activity. This document emphasized that physical activity promotion will not only improve people's health, but also contribute to a better society and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) developed by the United Nations. The strategy to promote physical activity is based on a systems-based approach, which recommends measures in eight areas: 1) whole-of-school programmes, 2) active transport, 3) active urban design, 4) healthcare, 5) public education, including mass media, 6) sport and recreation for all, 7) workplaces, and 8) community-wide programmes. This paper outlines the document and introduces its Japanese translation version.

The 2020 Yokohama Sport Conference, an international conference in harmony with the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, was initially planned to be held in Yokohama from 8 to 12 September, 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected the conference; the conference style and dates were changed and many programs were altered or cancelled. All sessions in which Japanese Association of Exercise Epidemiology was involved were also cancelled. Then, owing to the stakeholders' passions, kind understanding and help, we replanned and held online lectures and a talk by Dr. Fiona Bull (Head of Physical Activity Unit, Department of Health Promotion, Division of Healthier Populations, World Health Organization) and Dr. Daichi Suzuki (Commissioner, Japan Sports Agency) on September 9, 2020 as a public program, connecting Switzerland and Japan in real-time. As we could not have enough time for discussions among participants of the public program, we also held an online reflection session on the following day. Here, we summarize the process and contents of these sessions and discuss future perspectives, based on the findings from the sessions as an implementation of dissemination of exercise epidemiology.

社会情勢の変化により、児童の学力育成が重要視されている近年、児童が過ごす教室の温熱・空気環境が、児童の学習効率に影響することに加えて、身体活動が学習効率に与える影響について様々な報告がなされており、身体活動促進が児童・生徒の学力向上に寄与する可能性が示されている。そこで本研究では、教室の温熱・空気環境に加えて、児童の日常的な身体活動量が総合的に児童の学習効率に及ぼす影響を、計算作業成績を用いて客観的に評価することを目的とした。
