PMMA系GI型POFと高速変調赤色半導体レーザーとの組み合わせにより2.5Gb/s、100mのPOFによる伝送実験に成功し、さらに分子内の水素原子をフッ素原子に部分的に置換した部分フッ素化ポリマー材料により低損失化が可能になることを実験的に、また部分フッ素化により低材料分散性となりより広帯域化が可能であることを理論的に明らかにした。

A Graded-Index (GI) polymer materials show unique and useful optical properties which are not achieved by conventional optical materials with a constant refractive index.
The key element for polymer optical fiber (POF) to go into the data transmission media would be the large core GI POF that combines an intrinsic high bandwodth. Very recently, such a GI POF whose bandwodth was about 2GHz・km was successfully prepared by the interfacial gel polymerization technique at Keio University.
The GI type organic dye-doped POF amplifier (POFA) was prepared by the same technique of prepareing GIPOF. High-power (620W) and high-gain (28dB) optical fiber amplifier in a short length of the GI POFA was achieved due to the extremly large absoption and emission cross sections of the doped dye, and a large core dimension.
We proposed a new concept, highly scattered optical transmission polymer (HSOT) as a new light source medium in which the light is effectively scattered and illuminated from the surface during devices such as diffuser film and dot printing ets. which are indispensable in conventional mnes are not necessary in our proposal. The intensity of illumination is about 75% stronger than that of conventional PMMA plate systems.
