We demonstrate efficient and photostable laser action in graded index polymer fiber laser with organic dyes such as Rhodamine, Perylene and Pyrromethenes. Slope efficiency of 47% and output of 2.6 mJ have been obtained with a Rhodamine 6G-doped fiber laser. Moreover, we encapsulated rare ions to incorporate them into polymer matrices and studies spectroscopic properties of europium chelates in polymer hosts. Superfluorescent polymera fiber source based on Eu chlate-doped polymer optical fiber was demonstrated.

High-bandwidth and low-loss graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF) is introduced. With using a new polymer material, perfluorinated (PF) polymer, the attenuation of POF is lowered to around 40 dB/km, which enables 500 to 1000m transmission. More accurate analysis of the bandwidth characteristics of GI POF to realize the order of giga bit data transmission is quantitatively clarified in this paper. Furthermore, it was clarified that the stability of the refractive index profile and the attenuation under high temperature and high humidity atmosphere could be remarkably improved selecting the suitable dopant material.

A new new concept LCD backlighting system using the highly sacattering optical transmission (HSOT) polymer has the twice the brightness of the conventional backlight and uniform illumination. Light scattering phenomenon of a spheircal perticle inside the HSOT polymer is caluculated in detail by the Mie scattering theory. It was confirmed theoretically that, the color illuminated from the HSOT backlight could be controlled by the sphesified scatter leading to a high efficiency and high-visual quarity LCD backlighting system.

A lot of research interests are forcused on the introduction of optical fiber even in the access network because of the growing demand for accessing the Internet with high bit rate. Since inexpensive total cost is strongly required for LAN or access network, we have proposed a large-core, low-loss, and high-bandwidth graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF) as a promising candidate of physical media. In this paper, we describe the recent development of the GI POF in its attenuation and bandwidth achieved by investigating a new polymer material and by theoretical analysis.

Recent progress of graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF) and POF amplifier (POFA) are reviewed. Because the low attenuation of light transmission in the perfluorinated (PF) polymer, PF polymer based GI POF enables 500 to 1000m transmission, more accurate analysis is required in the refrective index profile to realize the order of giga bit transmission. Furthermore, recent improvement of the thermal stability of the GI POF is intorduced. We clarified that the stability of the refractive index profile and the attenuation under high temperature and high humidity atomosphere can be improved by selecting the suitable dopant material.
We demonstrated that the organic dye-doped POFA cover a wide spectral range in the visible with the best observed gain of 37 dB in a Rhodamine B-doped POFA pumped at 550nm. Also, with an europium chirate of hexafluoroacetylacetone in tris form doped GI POF, we observed superfluorescence, evidenced by spectral narrowing and lifetime shortening. The propospect is that the wide choice of ortganic dyes and rare earth chelates offers optical amplifiers and superfluorescent source for a variety of communication and sensor applications.
