Recent progress of the polymer optical fiber (POF) and related photonics polymers for high-speed telecommunication is reviewed. The high-bandwidth perfluorinated GI POF, which has no serious absorption loss from visible to 1.3µm wavelength, is proposed as a promising candidate for "the last one mile."

The progress of GI polymer optical fiber (GI POF) for high-speed data communication is reviewed. It was experimentally confirmed that the gigabit data transmission for several hundred meter at 1.3-µm wavelength was enabled by the low-loss perfluorinated (PF) polymer based GI POF. We described an impotance in thermal stability and long-term reliability of the GI POF which is one of the key issue in order to realize the high-speed POF network. We believed that these progress of low-loss PF polymer based GI POF have triggered the realization of the high-speed POF network.

Refractive index varies continiously within an inhomogeneous medium. Currentry the term "Graded Index" abbreviated to GI, is often used to describe such media. Such GI Materials desplay unique and useful optical properties that are not achieved by conventional optical materials with a constant refractive index. Many applications for GI materials have been reported for lenses and optical fiber communications.
For example, all commercially available optical fiber's (POF's) have been of the step index (SI) type whose bandwodth is about 5MHz/km due to the modal dispersion. In contrast, the bandwidth of Gi POF is two hundred times as large as SI POF, so it will be able to cover the required bandwidth of tne high speed multimedia network.

The status of the polymer optical fiber (POF) for high-speed data communication is reviewed. Recently, the low-loss and high-bandwidth perfluorinated GI POF which has no serious absorption loss from visible to near infreared region was successfully prepared at Keio University. Since the core diameter (300-1000µm) of the GI POF is much larger than that of the multimode silica fiber (62.5 µm),the serious modal noise in the conventional multimode silica fiber was virtually eliminated, resulting in stable giga bit order data transmission with inexpensive couplers and connectors.

ＧＩ－ＰＯＦを提案した。ＧＩ型ＰＯＦは材料がポリマーであるために大口径化が可能であることから、接続・分岐が容易であり、かつＧＩ型にすることにより広帯域が実現可能となる。また、フッ素化合物を用いることにより、1.3ミクロン帯でも良好な透明性が得られたのでその結果についても解説した。

Under such circumstances, plastic optical fiber (OPF) has benn attracting much attention as one of the candidates for transmission medium ofthe high-speed information communication network system. The POF can be prepared with a large core diameter because of the high flexibility, which would enable easy connection and branching in the network system. Moreover, realization of high bandwodth can be achieved by making a graded-index type.
In this thesis, we report on the recent study on high-speed POF.
