The attenuation is drawn to the fiber network in "the last one mile" to the residentioal area. The polymer optical fiber (POF) has been extensively developed especially in Japan to be utilized in this area with its advantage of great flexibility, easy handling and processing. The POF Consorium was founded in 1994 in Japan for the purpose of constructing POF-based multimedia society, and its membership consist over 50 companies and several universities. Very recently, the low-loss and high-bandwidth perfluorinated GI POF which has no serious absoption loss from visible to 1.3µm wavelength was successfully prepared at Keio University. The status of the POF for data communication in Japan is reviewed.

We propose a new optical material, highly scattering optical transmission (HSOT) polymer, whisch consist of specified microscopic heterogenious structure. The HSOT polymer optimized by Monte Carlo's simulation was applied to the LCD backlight. As the result, this polymer materials increas backlight brightness twofold.

The status of the polymer optical fiber (POF) for high-speed data transmission is reviewed. Very recently, the low-loss ansd high-bandwidth perfluorinated GI POF which has no serious absorption loss from visible to 1.3-µm wavelength was successflly prepared at Keio University. Since the core diameter (300-1000µm) of the GI-POF is much larger than that of the multimode silica fiber (62.5µm), the serious modal noise in the conventional multimode silica fiber was virtually eliminated, resulting in stable giga bit order data transmission with inexpensive couplers and connectors.

Recentry, information service which can be represented by the Internet service have become available to the general households, and broadband network has been to deliver video service which low cost and easy handling.
Under shch circumstances, plastic optical fiber (POF) become remarkable as the transmission medium of the high speed information communication network system. The POF can be prepared with a large core diameter because of the high flexibility, which would enable easy connection and branching in the network system. Moreover, realization of high bandwodth can be achieved by making a graded-index type.
In this paper, we report on the process of the studies and development of POF and the present situation of POF.

近赤外領域（波長１.３μｍ）でのPOFを用いた高速伝送の報告である。材料として全フッ素化ポリマーを用い、屈折率分布型ポリマー光ファイバーを作製した。伝送損失値は波長１.３μｍにおいて約50dB/kmであり、理論的に10Gb/sの伝送速度で伝送が可能であることを明らかにした。

The recent study on the LCD backlight has been more important to achieve lower energy consumption for portable computers. It was thought that transparent polymer materials were nessesary for optical-transmission media. Therefore, for conventional edge-light type backlight system, it has been believed that a transparent PMMA homopolymer plate as a light pipe has been indispensable. However, this conventional system has not given satisfied luminance. In this paper, a bright LCD backlight with 2.5-12.1 inches using the highly scattering optical-transmission (HSOT) polymre is proposed.

Recentry, information services which can be represented by the Internet service have become available to the general households, and a broaeband access network has been demanded to deliver video services with low cost and easy handling. In this paper, we propose a broadband graded-index type polymer optical fiber (GI-POF) for using an access network system. In the case of GI-POF, coupling loss caused by slight amount of displacement such as 30 micro meter is negligible because of the large core diameter.

Perfluorinated graded-index (GI) polymer optical fiber (POF) for near IR region was successfully prepared. The attenuation at 1.3 µm wavelength which is used for silica fiber is less than 60dB/km, while the attenuation of PMMA based GI POF at 1.3 µm wavelength is more than fifty thousand dB/km. Both model and material dispersion of perfluorinated GI POF were theoretically and experimentally confirmed. We propose a new concept of using the GI POF having giga bps transmission for the last one mile of the Information Superhighway.
