Advances in the bandwidth property of perfluorinated (PF) polymer based graded-index polymer optical fibers were described. It was clarified that the small material dispersion of PF polymer enabled 10Gb/s order data transmission, which was considered to be difficult for the conventional silica based multimode fiber.

Realization of all optical fiber networks even in the termination area is strongry requierd for high speed data transmission. POF has a great advantage in easy connection of fibers, which cannot be achieved by the small core conventional silica fiber, while it is similler to the connection of the copper cable. Therefore, as the POF can decrease the total network system cost including the fiber connector and optical transiver, the POF should be one of the promising candidates for transmissionmedia in the termination area of the all optical fiber network. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the perfluorinated (PF) polymer based GI POF enable to transmit 3.5Gb/s data for 200m. We believe that the high bandwidth PF polymer based GI POF can sufficiently cover the required data rate in the interface fo local area network (LAN) and forthcoming all optical networks.

Plastic optical fiber (POF) which has distinguished features such as high bandwidth, low loss like silica optical fiber and easy handling similar to copper cable, is expected to be a high speed network medium. It has been reported that the GI POF enabled gigabit data transmission. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that higher bandwidth than silica base multimode fiber can be achieved by the perfluorinated polymer base GI POF because of the small material dispersion. In this paper, the recent development of the GI POF is described in detail.
