光の偏波またはフォトンが様々な高分子鎖やその集合体、高次構造、更に巨大な不均一構造とどのようなかかわりを持つかを解析することにより、従来の光学材料に比べてより付加価値の高い「フォトニクスポリマー」を設計する事が可能となった。このフォトニクスポリマーと呼ばれる分野と、快適なネットワーク環境とのかかわりに関する最近の動向について詳しく解説した。

ポリマーの配向複屈折をナノサイズの複屈折性結晶を添加することにより相殺した。複屈折消去時のナノサイズの結晶とポリマー分子の配向状態を解析し、結晶の配向効率が高いことを明らかにした。この知見は、今後のナノテクノロジーの発展に大きく寄与するものである。

Both modal and material dispersions in a POF were minimized by forming a W-shaped refractive index profile with using a low-loss fluorinated polymer. Compared with the conventional PMMA based POF, higher-speed and longer-distance transmission were possible since the fluorinated polymers had lower attenuation than PMMA, and the W-shaped refractive index profile remarkably decreased the modal dispersion. We exhibited that by adopting a perfluorinated (PF) polymer with low material dispersion, the GI and/or W-shaped POF would enable the data transmission higher than the 10 Gb/s that has been a critical bit rate for the conventional silica based multimode fibers (MMFs).

We report a method for compensating the birefringence of optical polymers by doping them with nanometer-size inorganic birefringent crystals. In this method, an inorganic birefringent crystal is chosen that has the opposite birefringence to the polymer and rod like shape which are oriented when the polymer chains are oriented. As a result, the birefringence of the polymer is compensated by the opposing birefringence of the crystal.

ディスプレイまで直接光信号が送られるいわゆる“Fiber-to-the Display”に大きな関心が寄せられつつある。その伝送路として、フレキシブルでギガビット以上の伝送を可能とする高速プラスチック光ファイバー（GI型POF）が注目されている。筆者は、家庭の安心、安らぎをもたらす真のブロードバンド社会の在り方は、キーボード一辺倒のものではなく、等身大の高画質ディスプレイによる双方向のリアルタイムコミュニケーションであろうと考える。深夜に一人住まいのご老人が具合悪くなったときにボタンを押すだけで、病院とつながり、「どうしましたか」という対話をすることができれば、どんなに安心感が得られるでしょう。産学連携の在り方、およびFace-to-Faceに戻るギガビット社会と生活について講演する。

Novel photonics polymers for the real time face to face communication in broadband society are proposed. The Graded-Index Optical Fiber (GI-POF) has been proposed for the first time from the Keio University. Very recentry, the data transmission of 10GHz bandwidth for 500m was achieved by the Perfluorinated GI-POF, which was higher than that of silica based multimode fiber. The highly scattering optical transmission (HSOT) polymer backlight of LCD has been proposed, where the brightness is two times of that of conventional transparent backlight. And also, the zero-birefringence polymers, which are doped with needle-like crystals, for novel LCD films have been proposed.

In the field of LANs, transmission system based on a multimode silica fiber network is heading towards capacities of Gb/s. We have proposed a low-loss, high-bandwidth, and large-core graded-index plastic optical fiber (GI POF) in data-com. area. A serious problem of "modal noise" that exhibits in medium core of "multi-mode fiber" can be virtually eliminated by GI POF. Furthermore, advent of perfluorinated (PF) polymer based GI POF network can support high transmission than even silica fibers network because of the small material dispersion of PF polymer rather than silica material.
