New properties and potential applications of Photonics Polymer are explaining along with the basic studies on the relationship between photon lights and various polymer chains which create new properties. As results, we have come to an original discoveries such as Graded Index Plastic Optical Fiber with longer- distance transmission, less distorted transmission of ultra high-speed signals, more accurate control of polarization wave, more concentration, and more amplification.

In the field of LANs, transmission system based on a multimode silica fiber network is heading towards capacities of Gb/s. We have proposed a low-loss, high-bandwidth, and large-core graded-index plastic optical fiber (GI POF) in data-com. area. A serious problem of "modal noise" that exhibits in medium core of "multi-mode fiber" can be virtually eliminated by GI POF. Furthermore, advent of perfluorinated (PF) polymer based GI POF network can support high transmission than even silica fibers network because of the small material dispersion of PF polymer rather than silica material. The gigabit technology which we propose will bring us back to “Face-to-Face Communication.”

A GI-POF (Gated Index-Plastic Optical Fiber) optical LAN (Local Area Network) system has been developed for the communication system in condominium. We have demonstrated experiment of new types of several information technology services. The services are Giga-bit Internet, Channel on demand and Remote health counseling etc. The Giga-bit Internet affords us the connectivity that is higher than one gigabit per seconds. The Channel on demand is a new TV service where we can watch some TV programs that were televised a week before. This paper describes the characteristics of GI-POF and the results of the experimental remote health consulting service built with real time communication system.

We introduce the optimum design of the refractive index profile for high bandwidth plastic optical fiber. We propose a new index profile (multi g profile) that is optimized for laser or VCSEL based optical transmitters (restricted launch condition). For realizing a 10 Gbps optical link with GI POFs, the methodology for designing the optimum index profile is applied to a perfluorinated (PF) polymer with low material dispersion. We succeed in achieving an optical link with bandwidth of more than 10Gbps by utilizing the PF GI POF.
