Photosensitivity in a perfluoropolymer (CYTOP) optical fiber is investigated. Significant diffraction has been observed from transmission gratings made from the fiber. A maximum diffraction efficiency of 0.6% has been achieved, corresponding to a photosensitivity, in terms of the index change, approximately 3x10-4. This study demonstrates for the first time the existence of significant photosensitivity and feasibility of Bragg grating in CYTOP.

Recent status of the polymer optical fiber (POF) for high speed data communication is reviewed. In this paper, two types of graded-index (GI) POFs, i.e. PMMA-base GI POF and perfluorinated (PF) polymer base GI POF, are described. The PMMA base GI POF is expected as the media of home networking based on IEEE 1394 S400 for up to 100m distance. On the other hand, the PF polymer base GI POF has the possibility of achieving the highest bit rate among existing physical media including even silica fiber, since the material dispersion of the PF polymer is lower than those of silica and other polymer materials. Therefore, more than 10Gb/s bit rate transmission such as 10 giga Ethernet can be achieved by the PF polymer base GI POF with using any wavelength from visible to 1.3µm wavelength region.

This paper describes the potential bandwidth achieved by the graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF). Modal dispersion should be minimized to realize the high-speed data transmission in multimode type GI POF. On the other hand, when the refractive index profile is optimized to reduce the modal dispersion, another factors such as material, profile dispersion, mode coupling, and differential mode attenuation come to affect the bandwidth characteristics. In this paper, the maximum bandwidth of the GI POF is clarified by considering all important factors mentioned above, and ideal design of material and structure is also described.

We Keio University have proposed and demonstrated a low-loss, high-bandwidth graded-index polymer optical fiber (GI POF). Recently, it has become clear that the perfluorinated (PF) polymer base POF has the possibility of achieving higher bit rate rather than silica optical fiber. The high bandwidth characteristics of the PF polymer base GI POF were quantitatively analyzed by experimentally confirming that the material dispersion of the PF polymer is lower than these of silica and other polymer materials. Campus LAN using of the PF polymer base GI POF has been actually demonstrated at Keio University and great advantages of using GI POF in high-bandwidth, handling, installation, and total system cost have been realized. Forthcoming, high-speed POF networks will be proposed and discussed in my talk.
