不均一トラヒックによるセル棄却率特性の劣化を防ぐために、2つの入出力バッファ型ATM交換機を組合せホットスポットトラヒック専用ルートを設けた、2段ファ型ATM交換機を組合せホットスポットトラヒック専用ルートを設けた、2段通常はBackpresure(BP)モードを適用した処理を行なうが、 BPのサイズが予め設定してある閾値を越えるとシステムはホットスポットが存在すると判断し、ホットスポットを目指すセルを専用ルートに振り分けることにより、交換機特性の劣化を防ぐことができる。ホットスポットとなる出力ポートが時間的に変動する不均一トラヒックに対して、セル棄却率及び平均システム遅延について、計算機シミュレーションによる特性評価を行なった結果、 提案システムはセル棄却率特性及び遅延特性を改善できることが示された。

入出力バッファ型交換機は、比較的小さい出力バッファで理想的な遅延特性に近似できる優れた特性を持っているが、出力バッファが有限長であるため出力バッファ飽和の問題が生じる。従来、この問題を解決する動作モードとしてBackpressure モードが提案されているが、Backpressureを受けたセルが入力バッファの先頭(HOL)で待たされている時、その後方に並んだセルは目指す出力先のバッファに空きがある場合でも処理できないため、入力での待ち時間が大きくなるという問題点があった。ここでは、$b$本のフィードバックループを設けBackpressureの値がしきい値を超えるセルをフィードバックループのHOLに送る$(N+b)times (N+b)$入出力バッファ型交換機のモデルを提案し、計算機シミュレーションにより、フィードバックされたセルのBackpressureの影響を受けずに、その後方に並んだセルが処理できるため、入力側の待ち時間を短くできることを示した。
