Countries are beginning to regulate privacy and enact far-reaching data protection regimes. Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has influenced the laws of many countries in other parts of the world such as Asia and South America. Japan’s new data protection rules are also similar to the GDPR, but differ in important ways. The United States seems poised to adopt new federal privacy legislation, but it is unclear exactly what America’s new privacy law should look like.

What is important for governments to consider? What lessons can US regulators learn from the efforts of other countries? Join us for a conversation with CLIC Visiting Scholar Professor Fumio Shimpo, a widely recognized expert in the fields of privacy, data protection, information law, and AI and robot law, for a global perspective on the regulation of personal data and privacy.

AI and Robots are tools created by humans, and are currently at the stage where they are nothing more than tools which only operate according to human intentions. However, if autonomous robots controlled by AI system come to be used everywhere in society, the associated legal issues should be given a thorough legal re-examination. In order to attain a safe and comfortable robot coexistence society, we must immediately start to prepare social systems which are able to accommodate such a greater use of robots and to examine the relevant and ensuing legal issues.

While the privacy world watches the countdown to the GDPR, important changes are afoot outside the European Union. Some countries are tracking the EU model closely, in a bid to maintain or gain adequacy in the eyes of the European Commission. Other countries are charting a different course, driven by trade deals and national priorities that fall outside the confines of EU data protection law. What’s clear above all is that privacy law is in flux the world over. The GDPR aims to set the global standard, but will other countries follow suit? How are adequate (and adequacy-seeking) countries reconciling harmonization with local preferences and norms? And what important priorities are lost as the GDPR steals the limelight? Hear from the regulators of significant EU trading partners and learn about the critical changes taking place outside the EU.
