The conventional telephony networking was used mainly for communication between two terminals. However, recent network such as the Internet is mainly used for data distribution and access via the network. Recent research efforts are conducted to realize new network architecture that is optimized for this kind of communication, but it lacked in scalability when the data is added, moved, or updated. In this paper, we propose a new architecture call Data-centric Network (DCN) that allows scalable access to dynamic data in a widely distributed environment.

In order to reduce the energy consumption of transport/data center networks, MiDORi network technology is introduced. This network is based on a concept of aggregating traffic into specific links, and powering off interfaces of routers/switches that do not convey traffic. In this paper, we focus on an energy-optimal topology calculation method that can adjust the link reduction rate and the calculation time by setting different depth. However, there is no consideration of reliability which is a fatal issue for energy efficient networks that consist of minimal links. Therefore, two failure management methods are proposed. By computer simulation, we compared the two proposed methods from the perspective of energy efficiency and calculation time.

Energy serving is the one of the important issue for future network. “Green by ICT” and “Green of ICT” are two approaches for this problem. This paper shows that photonic network technology is the key technology for future green network. In addition, new Cloud type layer-3 network architecture is proposed to reduce network power.
Next, EVNO, Energy Virtual Network Operator, is new concept for smart network. This paper also describes this architecture and approach of this network.

Recently, live migration which is a technology of transferring virtual machines (VMs) is used inside a data center so that data centers can manage server load balancing and energy consumption effectively. It is expected that the live migration technology is extended into Wide Area Network (WAN) between data centers in order to manage VMs more effectively. However, because the IP address of a VM changes after live migration between data centers, the problem that communications between users and VMs disconnect occurs. To solve this problem, we propose two mechanisms: “Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) path switch mechanism using Next Generation Wide Area Layer 2 (NGL2) network” and “Exchanging destination address of VM mechanism”. In this paper, mechanisms of our proposal are explained in detail, and the mechanisms are demonstrated.

This paper outlines and demonstrates the authors’ view on the service model, architectural directions and key protocols for future cloud realized by utilizing the inscrutable possibility of the photonic network. It is pointed out that, driven by evolution of Cloud and Ubiquitous society, all services will be provisioned by and through an intelligent network where service resources are distributed. For this trend, we propose Multi- Service Cooperating Cloud (MSCC) provides various virtual clouds dynamically according to users’ requests by interconnecting multi service resources via network. The network architecture for realizing MSCC, which uses the network virtualization and extended IP protocol, is also introduced. The feature of our proposing architecture concept is to assign IP addresses to Service-Parts and execute MSCC service provisioning by utilizing IP mechanisms. By using IP mechanism, the construction of scalable and intelligent service network is expected.

We have proposed an active optical access network (ActiON) employing high-speed optical switches that ensures a higher subscriber number and longer transmission distance than those in the case of the conventional PON. Moreover, ActiON supports multicast slot allocation, which forces the switch to behave as an optical splitter. This paper introduces ActiON with variable distribution mode, which controls the distribution rate of the power. Proposed method realizes flexible multicast slot allocation according to the transmission distance from OLT to each user and the number of required users. Moreover, as the technology to realize the proposed method, this paper also shows adjusting of the proportion of optical power by applying the variable voltage to each electrode.

While being the nearness of realization of ubiquitous
society, it is expected that everything will be connected to the network. We previously presented “Ubiquitous Grid Networking Environment (uGrid)”. In uGrid, everything on the network such as devices, contents, and software is defined as “Service-Part”, and users are provided with composition of the several Service-Parts on the network. In uGrid, there are “Service-Routing” and “Service-Signaling” as the method of determining the path from
source to destination and establishing the optical path by using of IP protocol. However, in uGrid, in order to provide the services for users via the specified Service-Parts, these cost of services is high. Also, since users must designate the combination of Service-Parts, it is inflexible. Then, we propose “Energy Efficient, and
Enhanced-type Data Centric Network (E3-DCN)” which is based
on uGrid. In the E3-DCN, users request contents name to the
network and receive them from the network. If the requested
contents are not found in the network, the network constructs the requested contents with Service-Parts. In addition to that, E3-DCN aims at energy efficiency. In this paper, we propose a cost reduction method by Service-Parts copy as part of E3-DCN. Cost is reduced by copying the Service-Parts which have a software function to the optimal position. This method is defined as “Service-Copy”. By the evaluation using ILP (Integer Linear
Programming), it is shown that the case with Service-Copy can reduce the total cost of service by about 12～17%.

This paper proposes a novel traffic engineering method for improving the throughput characteristics of optical packet forwarding in an optical packet / path integrated network. This method is based on bypassing optical packets rejected from a highly-loaded optical packet switch onto one of the adjacent packet switches via an optical path to increase the network throughput. Since the formation of a bypass is equivalent to sharing the buffers of two or more optical packet switches, the packet loss rate can be reduced even by the same buffer length. Or the buffer length can be reduced to achieve the given packet loss rate.

To improve the energy efficiency of networks, power consumption should be proportional to the utilization of the network. We have proposed a concept which conducts traffic engineering in order to dynamically aggregate traffic on particular links and turn off unused links. This paper shows the demonstration results of the link power management by energy efficient network topology design with prototype Gigabit layer-2 switches. In the result, power consumption adaptively changed according to amount of traffic, and when traffic load is low, it can reduce of 23.8% of energy at maximum.

Recently, access network consumes almost 70% electricity of the whole network in Japan, and the low-power-consumption technologies such as ONU Sleep Mode get more popular. In this study, in terms of the ONU's power consumption, we would like to propose a new ONU Sleep Mode in which OLT informs both up/down schedules before sending data so that a part of devices in ONU is able to sleep with using the schedules. Then, we discuss an AWG-PON based optical access network for low power consumption.

With the development of network and device technology, the era that any device can be connected to the network has been expected. So we have proposed a ”ubiquitous grid networking environment (uGrid)” to meet the era need. In uGrid, everything from a device to a program is defined as ”Service-Part”, and by combining various Service-Parts, uGrid can provide a variety of composite services to users. About the video delivery system based on uGrid, the videos, which are processed by some Service-Parts from video server, are provided to users. Therefore, it is necessary to construct the tree, which is used for picking the appropriate Service-Parts from the server to users. However, using the minimum cost paths of each user to build the minimum cost path tree, the usage of amount of Service-Parts will be increased, and the resource utilization of each Service-Part will become very low. So, in this paper, we propose a tree construction method, which ensures that the biggest delay as a prerequisite, by repeatedly running the local aggregation to improve the utilization efficiency of Service-Part. This paper also presents some evaluations which the results show that our proposal is better than traditional approach in the utilization efficiency of Service-Part.

Recently, the Internet is necessary tool for our daily lives, and the number of the Internet users is increasing particularly quickly. Reflecting this trend, the amount of traffic and power consumption of network is increasing. To save the energy of network is a critical issue. One of the concepts of saving the energy is to realize a low power consumption network by aggregating traffic into specific links and powering off interfaces of routers/switches that do not carry traffic. However, a calculation method of this algorithm takes a lot of time to deal with a large network topology. In this paper, we propose a platform that processes the calculation of energy efficient topology rapidly using reconfigurable processor, STP. We use this reconfigurable device for calculation of the link utilization, it takes a lot of time of whole process of this algorithm. We show the possibility that our proposal can execute arithmetic processing faster than a usual software.

We foresee continuous increase in network traffic due to media streaming services and smart phones, and also future increase in M2M (Machine-to-Machine) data traffic such as sensor networks. On the other hand, improving the energy consumption of the network itself will be one of the important requirements in the future. In this presentation, we introduce a new network architecture called E3-DCN(Energy Efficient, and Enhanced-type Data Centric Network) which optimizes energy consumption within data-centric network.

我々は, サービスパーツと定義するネットワーク上のあらゆるハードウェア, コンテンツおよびソフトウェアを組み合わせ, ユーザに提供するユビキタスグリッドネットワーキング環境(uGrid) を提案している. 近年, ネットワークにコンテンツ名で要求してコンテンツを受信するData Centric Network (DCN) が広く研究されている. そこで, uGrid にDCN を拡張させたEnergy Efficient, and Enhanced-type Data Centric Network (E3-DCN) を提案する. E3-DCN では, ユーザが要求したコンテンツを必要に応じてサービスパーツを組み合わせて提供する. さらに, エネルギー効率化を目指す. 本稿ではE3-DCN の一環として, サービスパーツのソフトウェアを最適な位置に一時的にコピーすることによるエネルギー効率化手法を提案する. 整数線形計画法を用いて, サービスパーツのコピー機能の有無におけるエネルギー効率化に関して評価を行う.

A network using minimum set of nodes and links that all communication data traffics among nodes can be carried while meeting the QoS requirements named MiDORi (Multi- (layer, path, and resources) Dynamically Optimized Routing) has been proposed. MiDORi network technologies that is composed of a low energy consumption network design tool (MiDORi path computation engine (PCE)), MiDORi Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) protocol extensions for controlling network equipment, and a MiDORi router/switch controlled by MiDORi GMPLS, are now developing. This paper describes recent activities of the MiDORi network technologies.
