Influence of residential environment on residents’ health promotion

Housing plays a critical role in human life, and the establishment of a residential environment that promotes the health of its residents is a pressing issue. Numerous studies on housing have been previously conducted in this social context; however, only a few have considered the comprehensive health risk due to the overall residential environment. In the present study, therefore, a large-scale nationwide self-rated questionnaire survey was conducted to examine the residential environment of detached houses and its impact on residents’ health status. A tool used in the Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency (CASBEE), namely, the CASBEE Health Checklist, was distributed to various detached houses throughout Japan to assess the overall residential environment. The CASBEE Health Checklist covers residential environmental elements concerning thermal environment, acoustic environment, light environment, hygiene, safety, and security. Respondents were also asked about their current health status and that of family members. The questionnaire results were cross-tabulated, and odds ratios and significance probabilities (Fisher's exact test) were calculated. Results showed that the overall residential environment was likely an important determinant of health and was associated with prevalence of certain chronic diseases among residents. Odds ratios tended to be less than 1.0 in all cases, indicating that low disease prevalence was associated with a good residential environment.

Community-level decentralized and self-reliant energy network is expected to contribute to create a sustainable community as well as its self-vitalization and energy resiliency. But implementation of this system requires consensus among variety of stakeholders and long payback period, which are major hurdles. This study proposes the following concept and methods; (1)PPP business scheme consisting of two types of actors; "community-level energy network infrastructure operating company" and "on-site energy production and service providers". (2)Proper re-allocation of cost and co-benefits among stakeholders by taking advantage of opportunities of adjusting tariffs, taxes, subsidies for the purpose of equalizing each stakeholder's B/C.

<p>睡眠の問題は重大な健康被害をもたらす。近年、室内温熱環境と睡眠の関係に注目が集まりつつあるが、季節を通して調査を行った例は少なく、その検証は不十分である。そこで本研究では、夏季・冬季の室内温熱環境が睡眠に及ぼす影響を明らかにすることを目的として、2014年の夏季と冬季に実態調査を行った。マルチレベル分析の結果、夏季は寝室の室温1℃上昇に伴い0.2%睡眠効率が低下し、冬季は室温1℃低下に伴い0.8%睡眠効率が低下することが示された。</p>

With the recent reduction in physical activity seen in Japanese children, reduced ability to exercise and increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity have become serious health concerns. Therefore, governmental agencies have promoted the improvement of the regional environment to encourage physical activity in children. This study shows, using a questionnaire survey and actual measurement of physical activity of children and parents, that the frequency at which children use community centers and gyms and participate in community activities affects frequency of exercise. The number of daily steps in children who did not receive sufficient daily exercise (<10,000 steps/day) increased by about 3,000 steps/day when they participated in community activities.

<i>ENEMANEHOUSE2014</i>, a contest in which 5 universities design, construct, and measure Zero-Energy-Houses (ZEH), was held as a part of a project by Agency for Natural Resources and Energy. The University of Tokyo established a consortium with various enterprises and proposed a ZEH prototype of city apartment called “<i>CITY-ECOX</i>”. <i>CITY-ECOX</i> has flexible spatial structure and technologies that can be customized according to the climate of a construction site and lifestyles of house owners. A real size <i>CITY-ECOX</i> was built in Tokyo, January 2014, and its environmental performance was measured. This paper shows design of <i>CITY-ECOX</i> and result of its operation.

Improvements in workplace productivity bring significant benefits to companies, and so previous research has focused on how the indoor office environment affects workplace productivity. Recently, the effect of support spaces, such as “refresh corners”, on workplace productivity has been investigated. Light and the visual environment also affect the fatigue and sleepiness of workers through the autonomic nervous system. Hence, support spaces could improve workplace productivity by alleviating fatigue and sleepiness. In this study, we conducted a human subject experiment in the autumn of 2013. The working efficiency of participants was measured during simulated work while they used a support space with different light and visual environments. In addition, the participants wore a heart rate monitor to measure their autonomic nervous state and they answered a questionnaire on fatigue and sleepiness before and after support space use. An open support space activated the parasympathetic nervous system and reduced fatigue. Moreover, having blinds open to allow daylight in also activated the sympathetic nervous system and decreased sleepiness. Lower levels of sleepiness before work improved working efficiency for idea generation. These results suggest that using open support spaces with daylight reduces fatigue and sleepiness, and increases workplace productivity.

This study has carried out a cost benefits analysis for each stakeholder in an attempt to develop low-carbon communities and cities by implementing regional cogeneration systems and leasing photovoltaic systems to commercial buildings.<br>2. As a result, the economic benefits for energy service provider acting as an investor have been proved when non-energy benefits (NEBs) are accounted. In addition, numerous benefits to stakeholders other than investor have been proved. Also, subsidies by public sector (National, Local Government) will increase the economic efficiency for energy service provider (investor).<br>3. Since building owners and building users will gain NEBs such as of increase in real estate value, risk reduction (contribution of business and living continuity plan (BLCP), regulatory compliance etc) and maintenance cost reduction, possibility for redistribution of NEBs to the energy service provider (investor) in the form of service charge (rent, energy expense etc) have also been considered.

A questionnaire survey was administered to adult residents of three locales: a large city (Kitakyushu city)
a small city (ObuseTown)
and a rural village (Yusuhara town), in order to clarify the hierarchical structure of health related factors of housing and regional environment dependent on urban structure and scale. As a result of structural equation modeling, health related factorsmodel in Yusuhara was shown that 35% of residents' overall health may depend on their housing and regional environment, and it was the largest percentage of three locales. Besides, differences were found among the health related factors structure. These results indicate that design guidelines for health promotion that correspond to the urban structure and scale will be required.

Urbanization and change of lifestyle deprive children of their chance to participate in community activities. This paper analyses the structural relationship of factors of children's participation and their health factors focusing on community safety and parents' attitude toward community activities. A questionnaire was conducted to elementary and junior high school students and their parents in Kume Area, Matsuyama City where residents are earnest over various activities for community safety. In conclusion, it is suggested that children's participation has significant relationship with their physical and mental health and that they feel sense of community if they feel safe in the community.

Improvement of living environment quality of life (QOL) is increasingly attracting attention as a factor in disease prevention. We administered questionnaires to adult residents of a suburb of Kitakyushu City, Japan, in October 2009 and October 2011, with the aim of evaluating chronological changes in resident health and changes in the housing and regional environment over those two years. Cause-and-effect relations were considered through structural equation modeling (SEM) using a cross-lagged effects model and a synchronous effects model. Analysis of the results indicates that the housing and regional environment affects resident health. The present study quantified living environment value according to reported resident satisfaction. In addition, further studies with an increased sample size may be beneficial. Topics for future research include evaluation using objective indicators to strictly elucidate the causal relationship between resident health and living environment.

A Forecast of Effective Global Warming Countermeasures for the Residential Sector in China for the year 2050

Energy consumption in the Chinese residential sector is increasing quickly. In this study, we developed a Micro-model to forecast residential CO2 emissions. The model outputs support decision making for appropriate CO2 emission reduction goals. First, for Chinese urban residential buildings, we developed a CO2 emissions forecast model for 2050 taking into account lifestyle changes and Global Warming countermeasures. Second, we used the model to estimate the CO2 reduction potential of both residential and electrical countermeasures. Compared to the business as usual (BaU) scenario, implementation of residential countermeasures achieved 38%, 24% and 23% emissions reductions for Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong respectively. After combining them with the implementation of electrical countermeasures the reduction rates rose to 60%. We also compared the countermeasures to see which could bring the greatest emissions reduction. For Beijing, improvement of insulation was most efficient. For Shanghai and Hong Kong, COP increase of hot water supply appears to be the most efficient countermeasure. Through this study we were able to model global warming countermeasures for the Chinese residential sector, and found that reducing CO2 emissions by 60% from BaU is an achievable goal.

This paper introduces a comprehensive assessment tool of the built environment of cities, referred to as "CASBEE-City". The tool supports local governments and other stakeholders in identifying environmental, social and economic characteristics of their cities and to quantify the effectiveness of city-led policies. As for the other CASBEE tools, CASBEE-City also implements the concept of environmental efficiency and allows evaluation of a city from two aspects simultaneously: the aspect of decreasing negative environmental load emitted outside the city, and that of improving environmental quality and activities inside the city. It is expected to contribute to the realization of sustainable cities.

Using material flowcharts on wood and carbon, the study was made as follows: 1) With flowcharts developed on building-related woody waste and forest, wood residues, the current status was analyzed. 2) Through field survey, regional supply-demand imbalance was revealed as a major obstacle to of wood residue utilization 3) Subsequently, carbon flow analyses resulted in different carbon evaluations depending on whether fixed carbon was considered or not. but either case showed utilization of wood residues has substantial effects on fixed-carbon increase. 4) The study concludes that utilization of wood residues can help bring about a lower carbon society.

Thus people pay much more attention to the issues of reducing the energy consumption and CO 2 emission. This study chose Shanghai, a big city of China as a subject, and developed a Macro-model to forecast the CO 2 emission of residential buildings up to 2050. By combining such Global warming count measures into the Macro-model it was able to forecast the CO 2 emission of Shanghai's residential buildings in several energy-efficient scenarios.

Wood is well-recognized as a renewable resource that can contribute to the reduction of environmental load and it has long been used as a material in the building sector. The LCA database for buildings (established by the Architectural Institute of Japan) has been developed and utilized to evaluate the reduction of environmental load through the use of wood materials. However, this method does not evaluate the environmental load incurred through the production and transportation of imported wood materials, although wood materials are imported into Japan in large volumes. Therefore, this study aims to develop a database which includes the environmental load of imported wood materials from several countries and regions.
