鉄系高温超伝導体の内、最も高い超伝導転移温度を示すSmFeAsO1-xFxの低温合成温度の低減には、正方晶を示すSmFeAsOの結晶相出現条件のうち、最も低い温度を明らかにすることは有用である。過去に報告されたうち、最も低温でのSmFeAsO相出現を、電子顕微鏡とエネルギー分散型X線発光分析による解析を用いて明らかにする。

熱電変換材料の性能は無次元性能指数ZT=S2σT/κ、すなわちゼーベック係数(S)、電気伝導率(σ)、絶対温度(T)、熱伝導率(κ)より定義される。ZTが1を超えると実用的な熱電材料といえる。混合アニオン層状化合物の1111系BiCuSeOは1付近のZTを示すことが知られている。われわれは1111系AeMnPnF (Ae: アルカリ土類)の熱電変換性能を非経験的計算により部分的に予想した。

六方晶EuSn2As2はその格子にファンデルワールス結合を有する金属間化合物である。Sn2As2層とEu層が積層しており、代表的な熱電変換材料であるBi2Te3と晶系と化学結合は類似している。我々は低空隙率の多結晶EuSn2As2を作製し、その熱電変換性能を明らかにした。
