Profile Summary 【 Display / hide

  • My research interests are in the prehistoric archaeology of West Asia and South Asia. In particular, I am interested in the period from the emergence of farming and pastoralism to urbanization and civilization. During this period, humans continued to search for various “shapes” of societies, entangled with various things and people from various regions. Drawing on artifacts, I seek to reconsider the social transformation during this period. I am eager to conduct interdisciplinary research collaborating with various natural science fields to extract as much information as possible from artifacts. I also attempt to broaden perspectives on the history of humankind through artifacts drawing attention to recent trends in philosophy and cultural anthropology. Following these policies, I am conducting excavations and surveys of archaeological sites in Iran, Iraqi Kurdistan, Oman, and Pakistan.

  • A New Ubaid Ceramic Assemblage in the Shahrizor Plain, Iraqi Kurdistan

    Takehiro Miki, Kazuya Shimogama

Proceedings of the 13th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East. Copenhagen, 22–26 May 2023. Volume 2: Field and Lab Reports (Harrassowitz Verlag)     263 - 276 2025.06

    Lead author, Accepted

     View Summary

The Shahrizor Plain, Iraqi Kurdistan, lies between the Mesopotamian lowlands and the Zagros highlands. The location of this plain is significant in discussing the expansion process of the Ubaid black-on-buff ceramics into the Zagros Mountains and the subsequent regionalisation from the Late Ubaid (c. 4900–4500 BCE) to Late Chalcolithic 1 (LC, c. 4500–4200 BCE). However, the number of excavated Ubaid sites in the Shahrizor Plain is still limited compared to the northern part of Iraqi Kurdistan. Even though previous studies found Ubaid layers from excavations in the Shahrizor Plain, the ceramic information during the Late Ubaid is mainly preliminary. This study reports the first assessment of a new Ubaid ceramic assemblage discovered from Shakar Tepe (SSP-24) in the Shahrizor Plain, southern Iraqi Kurdistan, focusing mainly on its ware types and vessel forms. Through detailed ceramic analyses and intersite comparisons, we examine the relative chronology of the Ubaid pottery from Shakar Tepe and discuss the regional interactions and settlement dynamics in the Ubaid period of the Shahrizor Plain.

Abstract: The Shahrizor Plain is one of the ideal fields for tracking the transition from Neolithic village life in the Fertile Crescent to Urbanisation which occurred in Mesopotamia because of its geographical location connecting the mountainside valleys along the Zagros and the downstream Diyala River that flows into the Tigris. Our field project aims to obtain archaeological materials to unveil this process. Following the first excavations at Shakar Tepe conducted in 2019, we excavated two additional areas at this site in 2023, including one of the three satellite mounds that were newly identified around the main mound. The cultural remains of the Late Halaf settlement uncovered from Operation B at Shakar Tepe II date back to approximately 5600–5400 calBC. On the other hand, Operation C at Shakar Tepe I yielded a thick deposit of the Late Chalcolithic occupations dated to ca. 3800–3600 calBC. The recovered materials fill the time ranges in the late prehistoric chronology of the site and will contribute to our understanding of the historical role of this region in the transition from Neolithisation to Urbanisation.

<p>Issues such as the maintenance and management of water-related infrastructure facilities still remain. Clarifying individuals’ values regarding water is the foundation for sharing a vision of the society we should aim for and advancing the science of the water environment. Therefore, in this paper, we will introduce the six reports and general discussion from the symposium “Exploring individuals’ lives and values through water—what kind of water environment should we aim for?”. The reports covered a wide range of infrastructure, including water supply and sewage systems, flood control, and agricultural water systems, and encompassed studies from historical issues in ancient and modern times to future issues, making them highly interdisciplinary and diverse. At the same time, the reports confirmed a common “value people hold for water”.</p><p>Firstly, ensuring social fairness, such as distributive and procedural fairness, is one of the important foundations of individuals’ values regarding water. Fair water use is particularly threatened in times of disaster, highlighting the needs to have a pluralistic water supply and to share information at disasters. Secondly, the involvement of community members in water systems as a whole plays an important role in maintaining and passing on water infrastructure.</p>

  • The Regionalization in Ubaid Pottery Making Tequniches: A Perspective from the Shahrizor Plain, Iraqi Kurdistan

     View Summary

Recent discussion of the “Ubaid Phenomenon” focuses on the regionalization of Ubaid and the interregional interaction in Greater
Mesopotamia. However, regional characteristics can often be understood exclusively from the macro-level attributes of pottery,
such as painting patterns and vessel shapes. To tackle this research question and analytical problem, we conducted a petrographic
analysis of Ubaid pottery excavated from Shakar Tepe in the Shahrizor Plain, Iraqi Kurdistan. Through this analysis, we aim to
classify and analyze the fabric composition at a micro-level. We compared it with data from related Ubaid sites along with
macro-level attributes. As a result, at the macro-level the pottery from the Shahrizor Plain shows a similarity to the upper Tigris
River basin and the Hamrin Basin in terms of painted decoration and pottery-making techniques. At the micro-level we observed its
regional difference in the clay preparation technique of Ubaid Black-on-Buff Pottery. By understanding the regionalization of the
Ubaid pottery making techniques at macro- and micro- levels, we can discuss the interregional interaction more rigorously.

     View Summary

The Late Chalcolithic of Northern Mesopotamia in the early fourth millennium (LC2–3 phases) is a crucial period that significantly
marks indigenous proto-urbanism. Current research in Iraqi Kurdistan has also been changing the picture of the Uruk expansion,
explaining more regionally differentiated complex interactions, rather than a simple homogeneous commercial process as argued
before. To discuss this, however, the ceramic chronology remains poorly established, especially in trans-Tigridian Mesopotamia. In
this paper we present our quantitative morpho-typological and ware analysis of the recently discovered Late Chalcolithic ceramic
sequence from Shakar Tepe in the Shahrizor Plain, Sulaymaniyah (Iraqi Kurdistan). The pottery assemblage, radiocarbon-dated to
a few hundred years straddling the late LC 2 and LC3 phases, consists primarily of coarse chaff-tempered wares. Notably, among
many local types, it is characterised by a number of “Bevelled Rim Bowls” (perhaps mass-produced) but lacking other genuine
southern types. We will argue that the new evidence from Shakar Tepe can be an essential key to reassessing the elusive
chronological framework by detecting ceramic changes in the middle part of the Late Chalcolithic in Iraqi Kurdistan, and
contributing to understanding the early contact period.

     View Summary

At the University Museum, the University of Tokyo, there is a significant collection of pottery fragments from prehistoric sites in
southern Iran. These artefacts were excavated by the Tokyo University Iraq-Iran Archaeological Expedition, led by Namio Egami,
during the 1950s and 1960s. The new project, “JUMP (Tall-e Jari B & Tall-e Mushki Pottery Restudy Project),” focuses on the
pottery collections from Tall-e Mushki (circa 6400-6000 BCE) and Tall-e Jari B (circa 6000-5600 BCE) in Fars province, southern
Iran. While some of these collections were documented in a final excavation report in the 1960s, many remain unpublished. This
project aims to publish a final report on un(der)studied pottery materials and apply interdisciplinary methods, such as thin-section
petrography and making three-dimensional models, to these old collections. By shedding new light on these artefacts, we hope to
enhance our understanding of the past and make these collections more accessible to the public.
