  • Personality-trait differences in post-occupancy evaluations

    Shiro Arata, Shun Kawakubo

    Indoor Environments (Elsevier)  3 ( 3 ) 100178 2026.09

Research paper (scientific journal), Joint Work, Last author, Accepted,  ISSN  2950-3620

     View Summary

Creating healthy and comfortable indoor environments requires not only controlling physical conditions but also accurately capturing how occupants experience them. POE is a practical approach for providing building owners, operators, and design teams with actionable knowledge derived from occupants’ evaluations, yet substantial individual variability persists. One under-explored source of this variability is whether stable personality traits systematically influence the reporting of IEQ-related experiences in POE. A survey of the office environment was conducted with 1537 white-collar workers from 62 offices (tenant companies) across 29 buildings. Personality was measured using the Big Five personality traits framework comprising extraversion (sociability), agreeableness (cooperativeness), conscientiousness (self-discipline; preference for structure), neuroticism (emotional sensitivity), and openness to experience (curiosity). Item-wise ordinal logistic regressions, controlling for gender, age, and occupation, revealed widespread trait associations. Agreeableness was associated with 39 of the 51 items and was linked primarily to lower favorable evaluations. Extraversion was positively related to spaces that support social interaction and communication. Neuroticism was negatively related to items capturing negative conditions such as internal noise and thermal discomfort. Conscientiousness showed a minimal association. Although the results are subject to cultural and regional constraints and potential measurement tool-related limitations, the findings suggest that personality traits are a meaningful individual-level factor underlying the heterogeneity of POE responses and may inform trait-aware interpretation of occupant surveys.

  • Toward sustainability transformation in tourism: A cross-destination benchmark of sustainable tourism implementation in Japan using JSTS-D

Shiro Arata, Shun Kawakubo, Minako Okada, Kumi Kato

    Sustainable Cities and Society: Advances (Elsevier)  2 ( 3 ) 100085 2026.09

Research paper (scientific journal), Joint Work, Accepted,  ISSN  3051-052X

     View Summary

As tourism governance and practice evolve, destinations are increasingly striving to improve sustainability and the holistic well-being of communities. Therefore, sustainable tourism indicators offer a practical first step for sustainability transformation by translating broad goals into measurable implementation pathways. However, evidence remains dominated by case studies, limiting cross-destination benchmarking. This study benchmarked sustainable tourism implementation maturity in Japan using the Japan Sustainable Tourism Standard for Destinations, a localized framework aligned with the four Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria for Destinations domains. Self-assessments from destination governance organizations in 47 destination units across 27 prefectures were rated on a six-level maturity scale and converted to scores of 0–100 for domain- and item-level comparison. The mean total score was 51.7 (standard deviation 19.3), indicating intermediate maturity with substantial variation. Governance scored highest (55.7) and environmental sustainability lowest (47.1); differences among the higher-scoring domains were small, whereas environmental sustainability was consistently the lowest. Bottlenecks were concentrated in criteria less readily embedded in routine tourism administration, whereas criteria based in administration showed higher maturity. Cluster analysis identified co-implemented practice bundles and stand-alone criteria, offering insights for staged and targeted support strategies. These findings should be interpreted as a benchmark for participating destinations and not as a population-representative estimate for all destinations in Japan.

  • Hierarchical Structure Analysis of the Association between Neighborhood Environment and Healthy Life Expectancy

Shintaro Ando, Shunsuke Maeda, Shun Kawakubo

    Journal of Environmental Engineering (Transactions of AIJ) (Architectural Institute of Japan)  91 ( 843 ) 276 - 283 2026.05

Research paper (scientific journal), Joint Work, Last author, Accepted,  ISSN  1348-0685

     View Summary

The purpose of this study was to estimate healthy life expectancy at the small-area level and to examine the association between neighborhood environments and healthy life expectancy, both directly and indirectly through social capital (SC), using community facility indicators as proxy measures of SC. Multiple regression and path analyses were conducted to explore the relationships among neighborhood environment, proxy SC indicators, and healthy life expectancy. The results suggested that neighborhood environment was indirectly associated with healthy life expectancy through SC, with differences observed by age group and gender.

  • Seasonal and personality trait associations with neutral temperatures in home workspaces

    Shiro Arata, Shun Kawakubo

    Energy and Buildings (Elsevier)  358   117203 2026.05

Research paper (scientific journal), Joint Work, Last author, Accepted,  ISSN  0378-7788

     View Summary

Hybrid work has been widely adopted, but thermal comfort in home workspaces has received less attention than that in laboratories and offices. The adaptability of home workspaces may be associated with individual differences, including those related to personality traits. Thus, the analysis focused on two issues: (i) the relationships among temperature, humidity, and thermal sensation at home, and what neutral temperatures arise in summer and winter; and (ii) how these relationships vary with personality traits. A field survey was conducted in the Tokyo metropolitan area. In situ physical measurements of indoor air temperature and relative humidity were obtained simultaneously in 60 homes in summer and 190 in winter, and these measurements were paired with concurrent occupant evaluations while working from home. Ordinal logistic regression estimated neutral temperatures of 28.1 °C in summer and 21.0 °C in winter, which is a wider seasonal gap than is commonly reported for offices. The associations between personality traits and neutral temperature differed by season. In summer, higher levels of extraversion and neuroticism were associated with a higher neutral temperature. For neuroticism, shifting from −1 to +1 standard deviation moved the neutral temperature from 27.4 to 28.8 °C (Δ 1.4 °C). In winter, the neutral temperature increased with extraversion and decreased with openness. These results highlight season- and personality-related variation in estimated neutral temperatures and provide empirical benchmarks for thermal comfort in home workspaces.

  • Role of the Residential Environment in Shaping Subjective Well-being

Shun Kawakubo, Shiro Arata, Tomomitsu Kamata

    Journal of Happiness Studies (Springer Nature)  27 ( 59 ) 1 - 25 2026.04

Research paper (scientific journal), Joint Work, Lead author, Corresponding author, Accepted,  ISSN  1573-7780

     View Summary

Despite the fact that housing represents a fundamental unit of urban systems where people spend much of their daily lives, little attention has been paid to the structural relationship between residential environments and subjective well-being. In this study, structural equation modeling was used to analyze the structural relationship between residential environment and subjective well-being, controlling for the effects of demographic factors and personality traits. An online survey of 1,001 adult residents in Japan measured subjective well-being and assessed residential environments, consisting of the thermal, acoustic, light, hygiene, safety, and security. The model revealed an important pathway from the residential environment to subjective well-being mediated by life-domain satisfaction. The six environmental components described above all contributed substantially to the latent residential environment construct, with safety and hygiene showing the highest loadings. This study contributes to a more fundamental understanding of the structural relationship between residential environments and subjective well-being. It also provides insights into designing better residential environments that enable everyone to live in healthier and more supportive spaces—an endeavor that is crucial for promoting sustainable and inclusive urban development, particularly in terms of enhancing overall quality of life.
