  • Water Development in the Medieval Western Delta

    This chapter explores water development in the Buhayra province (western Delta), mainly from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, to examine the canal system and how it was developed. Buhayra province, an administrative prefecture in Ottoman Egypt, was located on the route that connected Alexandria to Cairo. From the early Islamic period down to the Mamluk period (1250–1517), the province had seen the development of canals for navigation and irrigation. Although Mamluk sources describe these water development works, we know less about them through the Ottoman period due to a lack of contemporary accounts. The most accessible and seemingly accurate source on the rural landscape is the Napoleonic map from Description de l’Égypte; this map, however, only reflects the landscape at the end of the eighteenth century. Such a situation makes the Ottoman period a blank space in the province’s history. This chapter aims to analyse what happened in the Ottoman period to those canals developed in the Mamluk period to understand, as sequentially as possible, how the canals and the landscape along them changed. The analysis also gives us a glimpse of the fringes of Ottoman rural administration, revealing how the canals were maintained at the time.

    大戦間期の地中海・中東経済圏では、先発資本主義国と後発資本主義国が覇権を争い、列強植民地勢力と現地の民族主義勢力が対峙する激しい経済競争が展開された。そうした中で、日本は重要なアクターとなって行く。こうした錯綜した経済環境は、地中海・中東経済圏の綿花取引・金融の中心であるアレクサンドリアほかエジプトの港に関する貿易統計、特にスエズ運河の通貨船舶統計に端的に示されている。本研究では、スエズ運河通過船舶データを基礎資料に、大戦間期の日本における地中海・中東経済圏への経済進出の意味を地域横断的・学際的に明らかにする中で、大戦間期の世界経済地図におけるヨーロッパとアジアとの関係を見直すことを目指す。
    本研究事業は、大戦間期における日本による地中海や中東への経済進出の意義について、史料および数量データに基づき明らかにすることを目的としている。１年目に当たる2024年度は、研究目的の達成に必要となる資料の収集作業が行われた。同時に、本研究事業の参加者が情報交換を行う機会として定期的に研究会を実施し、問題意識の共有および研究成果について議論を行った。本年度の研究実績を簡単にまとめると、①資料収集、および②収集資料の分析が挙げられる。
    ①資料収集：本事業においては、４つの研究テーマを設定し、各テーマごとに作業が行われた。テーマの一つである「スエズ運河を介した世界交易ネットワークのなかの日本」に係る作業として、スエズ運河を通過・経由した船舶について、エジプト側およびインド側の貿易統計を収集したことである。当該資料収集は、日本による地中海・中東圏への進出について分析・検討を行うために実施された。このことから、日本による海上交易に関する資料の収集を中心に作業が行われ、これら資料は統計情報として整理された。また、同テーマの作業として、横浜正金銀行アレクサンドリア出張所・支店に関する資料収集が行われた。
    ②収集資料の分析：まず、収集されたエジプト側およびインド側の貿易統計データより、ヨーロッパ船舶および日本を含むアジア船舶の動きを確認することができ、そこからは、地中海・紅海・インド洋交易ネットワークにおけるスエズ運河の重要性が再確認された。他方で、収集された横浜正金銀行アクレサンドリア支店のデータから、大戦間期において同支店はエジプトと日本との綿関連の貿易金融を中心に同地域で地歩を築いていったことが明らかになった。同時に、同支店は日本企業・商人のみならず、現地企業・外国企業からの信頼を得て、大戦間期という厳しい金融環境の中でビジネスを展開していったことも確認された。
    データの収集および解析作業は順調に行われていることから、現状では、概ね順調に研究事業が展開されている。
    本研究事業の研究テーマのうち、研究目的の達成に必要となる資料の収集および資料の解析作業を早期に進める。これにより、大戦間期の世界経済における日本の立ち位置、そして交易ネットワークから分かるヨーロッパとアジアとの関係を再検討することを目指す。

    1970年代にイェルサレムで13-14世紀に書かれた900点ほどの「ハラム文書」とよばれる文書群が発見された。
    その中の28点のペルシア語文書の研究はいまだ行われていない。また、14点のアラビア語文書は、28点のペルシア語文書とイラン北部の地名、文書形式、発行年代が共通し両者は一つの文書群をなす。
    当研究は、これら42点の文書を解読し、テキストを作成し、翻訳し、既知の文書や既刊の文書集と比較・対照し、その結果をもとに国内外の文書研究者と議論し、それらの文書の資料的価値を決定し、研究成果を解説を付した資料集として出版し、13-14世紀モンゴル支配時代イランの社会史研究の基礎的資料とする。
    当科研研究は2021年4月にはじまったが、文書を読解していくためにはまず東洋文庫所蔵の2000枚ほどのハラム文書のマイクロフィルムから、この科研で読むPersian文書とPersianate文書42点を選び出して焼き付けて研究分担者が共有しなければならなかった。このためには研究代表者が4月に東洋文庫を訪れて写真を選定してその焼き付けを申請する予定であった。しかし、幸いなことに2021年1月に東洋文庫が所有するマイクロフィルムのPDFが、そのオリジナルの所有者であるカナダのMcGill　Institute　of Islamic Studiesからオンライン上に上げられた。それをダウンロードし、PDFを全てをJPEGにして、全員が共有するクラウドDropboxの共有ファイルに収納し、それによって全てのハラム文書写真を全員が共有することができた。そして2021年7月から8月にかけて、3週間奈良大学の大学院生1名を雇用してデータベースソフトFile Maker Pro2に、Donald P. Littleによるカタログ（Beirut, 1984）情報とともに全ハラム文書のJPEGを貼り付け、ハラム文書のデータベースを完成させた。
    9月以降、Dropboxの共有ファイル中のJPEGおよびデータベースをつかって月一回のペースでZoomによる研究会をひらいて文書を読み進め、現在まで予定の42点の文書中Persian７点、Persianate3点を解読した。
    2021年5月に、Zoomによる研究会において研究分担者の伊藤隆郎博士にChristian Muller, Der Kadi und seine Zeugen, Wiesbaden, 2013の内容を詳細に紹介してもらった。
    2021年6月24日に、Konrad Hirschler博士を長とするドイツのハラム文書を研究する3人と当研究会8人でシンポジウムをおこない、今後の研究協力について協議した。
    2021年度はコロナ禍のため対面での研究会が一度ももてず、すべてzoomによるネット会議になったが、分担者たちの協力により月一回の研究会のペースをなんとか維持することができた。
    当初予想していたよりも文書読解は進んでいない。それはpersianおよびpersianate文書が書かれているくずし字のアラビア文字の読解が予想をこえる困難さを伴っていたからである。今後文字に慣れていきさえすれば読解の速度はあがると思われる。
    2022年度は昨年度通り月一回のぺースでネット上での研究会をおこなっていく。
    2022年9月4日（日）から5日間イェルサレムのIslamic Museumで文書調査をおこない、ハラム文書全体のデジタルデータを購入予定。

    In this study, we continue to analyze trade around Egypt by 1) clarifying the differences between the Mediterranean trade network with Alexandria as its hub, the long-distance sea routes with Port Said and the Suez Canal as its hub, and the Mediterranean-Red Sea coastal trade, the characteristics of the ships, and especially the connections with each of the European great powers, through a longitudinal analysis of data such as the number of ships (by flag) departing and arriving at each port along the Egyptian coast, and the size of the ships, etc. Ships passing through the Suez Canal were mainly British, but we also deciphered the colonial strategies of each of the European great powers, including Italy and Germany.
