Profile Summary 【 Display / hide

  • I have been researching (long) 19th-century British literature and culture, with a particular emphasis on British Aestheticism in its global context. My current project investigates the historical connection between curiosity and cosmopolitan aestheticism in various 19th- and early 20th-century writers, including Walter Pater, J. A. Symonds, Oscar Wilde and Lafcadio Hearn, with the aim to contextualise them within a broader map of curiosity and the history of ideas.

I am a passionate ‘bibliophile’, serving as Secretary of The Keio University Society of Bibliophiles for over a decade. I am also a member of various international societies for bibliophiles, including The University of London Society of Bibliophiles, of which I served as a founding committee member (Treasurer) in 2016-18, and also of The Bibliographical Society of London and The Private Libraries Association.

Testing New Opinions and Courting New Impressions: New Perspectives on Walter Pater (2017; paperback 2019)

Travelling Books: History in Europe and Japan (Keio University & British Library [FutureLearn], 2022)
