Considerations and consequences of allowing DNA sequence data as types of fungal taxa

© 2018 International Mycological Association. Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN.

筑波山周辺および霞ヶ浦の自然環境については，従来より数多くの研究に加えて，平易な解説や紹介がある．これらは，各分野における調査，分析に基づく専門的な学術論文や書籍等と一般向けに記述された文献とに大別される．本稿では，筑波山周辺地域の地形，地質，岩石，鉱物，気候，気象，植生，菌類および霞ヶ浦における環境変化に関して，一般向けから専門的な文献までを網羅するレビューを行った．これらの文献の精査は，今後，筑波山周辺および霞ヶ浦における調査あるいは研究を行う際に，きわめて有用と考えられる．

<p>　The present study reports the identification of a newly recorded species, Gymnopilus decipiens, in Japan, along with a description and illustration of its morphological characteristics （based on a specimen collected from Hokkaido）. The G. decipiens specimen collected from Hokkaido is characterized by its close proximity to fumaroles, which discharge highlyheated steam and volcanic gas, and its small basidiomata and mild taste. Maximum parsimony analysis of the nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacer （ITS） region revealed that Japanese and Russian （Yakutsk） samples of G. decipiens possess identical ITS sequences, suggesting that G. decipiens is widely distributed throughout the subarctic region, including Siberia and Hokkaido.</p>

千葉科学大学危機管理学部環境危機管理学科3年生の必修授業「野外調査法」は，自然科学のさまざまな分野の野外調査方法の基礎を習得するための実習である．2015年度の野外実習では，茨城県中部において，現成の海岸地形・堆積物，段丘地形・堆積物，森林植生・菌類，河川の水生昆虫の観察，しじみの養殖施設の見学，地表水・湧水の採水，ストーンペインティングを行った．学生は実習全体に満足し，分野横断型の実習内容を肯定的に評価したことから，今回の野外実習の教育的効果は高かったと思われる．The " Introduction of field survey " is a required practice for third-year undergraduate students of the Department of Environmental Risk and Crisis Management, Faculty of Risk and Crisis Management, Chiba Institute of Science, Japan. The practice aims to learn basic methods of field sciences. The practice in 2015 included topics of geology and geomorphology, forest and aquatic ecology, fisheries, chemical analysis, and science education. Students satisfied the entire program and showed a positive evaluation for the multidisciplinary contexts of practice.
