    Why Article 9 Matters?
    Since the adoption of Japan’s Constitution in 1946, debates over Article 9 have been a constant feature of Japanese politics. One cannot fully understand Japanese politics without grappling with the issues surrounding this pacifist provision. This lecture examines how Article 9 has been interpreted over time and identifies the key constitutional and political challenges that arise from those interpretations.

    Why Has Japan Not Abolished the Death Penalty?
    Although many countries around the world have moved toward abolishing capital punishment, Japan has shown little political momentum in that direction, and the issue rarely becomes a major topic of national debate. This lecture examines the constitutional interpretations that frame discussions of the death penalty in Japan and considers how these interpretations should be evaluated.
