  • Vision Paper for Enabling Internet of Medical Robotics Things in Open Healthcare Platform 2030

Innovation in Medicine and Healthcare, 3-14 (Smart Innovation, Systems and Technologies)  192   3 - 14 2020

© The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2020. The medical robotics market in the global healthcare industry have spread and extended in these several years. Internet of Medical Robotics Things (IoMRT) is also growing and Internet of Things is extending a new field of healthcare application. Whereas, the previous paper suggested that, in the field of robotics, the cloud platforms for Internet of Robotics Things (IoRT) were gradually developed; therefore, the digital platform and architecture for IoMRT of the healthcare industries should be formulated when necessary. An open healthcare platform for IoMRT is expected to promote and implement the robotics and the IoMRT applications for medical and healthcare communities efficiently. In this paper, we suggest that various medical robotics and the IoMRT-related applications will be designed and verified, while the open platform for medical, healthcare-related Robotics should be proposed and verified by the research initiative named “Open Healthcare Platform 2030–OHP2030.” In addition, the vision for enabling medical robotics and the IoMRT-related applications in the OHP2030 research initiative is explained.

  • Ballpoint-pen interconnect innovation for real-time 4K/8K video transmission using GI POF

© COPYRIGHT SPIE. Downloading of the abstract is permitted for personal use only. Higher quality video formats such as 4K/8K have emerged. Since these video formats require high speed communication which cannot be done with commercial copper cables to transmit uncompressed live video without latency, optical communication has been expected as an ideal solution. However, conventional silica optical fibers are not suitable to be handled by consumers for such high-speed short-reach applications, because of their fragileness and difficulties in precision connections at low cost. We propose a novel optical interconnect using a graded-index plastic optical fiber (GI POF) with each end having a glass spherical collimator lens uniquely fabricated by low-cost ballpoint pen technologies. As one of promising applications of the interconnect, improved 8K endoscope camera and its CCU (Camera Control Unit) will be discussed for medical use. At an operation room in a hospital, surgeons need to handle the camera. Video cables are inserted, bended, removed, and exchanged frequently during the operation. Silica optical fibers are not flexible for such frequent handling application. To overcome the problems, optical modules, optoelectronic composite cables using GI POF, and the ballpoint-pen interconnect were developed. Using the system, 8K video from the endoscope camera was successfully transmitted at our verification experiments.

  • Visualization of “skills for living smart” for methodology development to improve skills

© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019. Many people today have trouble socializing and feel uncomfortable and unsatisfied with human relations. Additionally, people must accomplish their life goals within a limited time frame. Based on seminars held to improve skills for “living smart,” the authors felt that the social demands of living smart are increasing. This research attempts to visualize the skills for living smart in order to develop a methodology to improve these skills. An inductive approach clarified that “skills for living smart” comprise two factors: “entry into the environment” and “breakthrough strength.” We extracted seven components of “entry into the environment” (“participation ability,” “setup force,” “future force,” “antenna power,” “chameleon power,” “enchanting power,” and “cheerleading power”) and five components of “breakthrough strength” (“incredible ability,” “first impression ability,” “rising power,” “ability to grasp the heart,” and “boosting power”). We also demonstrated the continued effectiveness of the Seminar for Living Smart training. Visualizing skills for living smart are expected to facilitate future development of methodologies to improve these skills.

  • Investigation report of communication at the first meeting to improve working environment for Japanese IT employees with overseas assignment in the Philippines

     View Summary

© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019. Nowadays, the globalization is rapidly increasing and many Japanese employees are going overseas. The first author has experienced assignment in the Philippines for globalization, but the first author had a stumbling block in work-related communication with the local workers and felt difficulty to adopt globalization. Our interviews confirmed that most Japanese IT workers assigned to the Philippines had similar experiences that the problem was difficult to take measures in advance. A sense of unease was revealed in surveys conducted in 2002 by Nishida on intercultural communication frictions in Japanese companies in the Philippines entitled “Japanese Cultural Differences Felt by Filipinos” and “Roles Sought From Japanese Bosses and Leaders by Filipinos”. Although many studies have been done on communication and interpersonal relations and it is often stated that conscious communication from the initial stages is vital to building interpersonal relationships, there are still few practical studies on the matter. Instead of initial stage communication, we focused on the first meeting conversation, conducted questionnaires on topics selection among Japanese and Filipino IT workers, verified differences in topic selection mutually using quantitative evaluation, and reported investigative results on possible reason why smooth interpersonal relationships could not be built from the initial stages.

  • Clinical Decision-Support System with Electronic Health Record: Digitization of Research in Pharma

Smart Innovation, Systems and Technologies (Smart Innovation, Systems and Technologies)  145   47 - 57 2019

     View Summary

© 2019, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. Clinical Decision-Support (CDS) systems are architected to resolve knowledge-intensive tasks for supporting decision-making processes in the medical fields and the healthcare industry. Furthermore, CDS systems are expected to promote and contribute to the drug discovery process in pharmaceutical companies, while the CDS system can be connected and collaborated with electronic health record (EHR). However, current solutions for CDS are not well-established across different organizations and institutions in information societies because of high implementation costs and various, complex decision-making problems by medical staffs. In this paper, we suggest that the reference architecture and framework for the CDS system with EHR will be proposed and verified by the case in a hospital. In addition, the challenge and future activities for this area are expressed.
