Senbay: smartphone-based activity capturing and sharing using sensor-federated video

We present Senbay, a novel smartphone-based platform for capturing and sharing synchronously-recorded video/sensor data stream using animated two-dimensional barcode. In the ubicomp environment, mobile devices have enabled us to capture video and various types of sensor data easily. However, currently we do not have a framework to instantly integrate video and those sensor data on smartphones and share them easily with other users on the net. In this paper, we present Senbay, a platform to integrate video and sensor data stream into single video on smartphones. With Senbay, sensor data stream will be embedded into a video as animated QR code in real-time, thus users can share the \sensor-federated" video easily on the web, through lots of popular video sharing services. This paper introduces the architecture and evaluation of Senbay and discusses future vision of the sensor-federated video sharing platform along with several applications.

In today's ubiquitous computing environment where users carry, manipulate, and interact with an increasing number of networked devices, applications and web services, human attention is the new bottleneck in computing. It is therefore important to minimize a user's mental effort due to notifications, especially in situations where users are mobile and using multiple wearable and mobile devices. To this end, we propose Attelia II, a novel middleware that identifies breakpoints in users' lives while using those devices, and delivers notifications at these moments. Attelia II works in real-Time and uses only the mobile and wearable devices that users naturally use and wear, without any modifications to applications, and without any dedicated psycho-physiological sensors. Our in-The-wild evaluation in users' multi-device environment (smart phones and smart watches) with 41 participants for 1 month validated the effectiveness of Attelia. Our new physical activity-based breakpoint detection, in addition to the UI Event-based breakpoint detection, resulted in a 71.8% greater reduction of users' perception of workload, compared with our previous system that used UI events only. Adding this functionality to a smart watch reduced workload perception by 19.4% compared to random timing of notification deliveries. Our multi-device breakpoint detection across smart phones and watches resulted in about 3 times greater reduction in workload perception than our previous system.

Encouraging Team Behavior Modification Using Life Log

Currently, everyone can detect and store many life-log data very easily with the spread of smart phones or wearable devices and large scale data storage. Wide variety and large scale life-log data are very useful to self behavior change, medical care, education, and social analytics. Existing researches of human behavior change using life-log data focus on individual human behavior change. But nowadays everyone have communication equipment like smart phones. Group behavior change is very useful to keep workers' health in company and/or managing amount of practice in a sport team. Group has many kind of human relations, for example, manager and normal member. Therefore techniques for individual human behavior change is not effective to groups. The biggest aim of our research is to build the model of group behavior change. Specially, we focus on team behavior change. In this paper, we propose six types of group behavior model based on the "competition" and "collaboration" technique. We used encouraging team modification application in sports team and laboratory for keeping the sit-up exercise for 3 weeks. Sit-up exercise is very important to preventing the injury and keep fit for the sport team and the laboratory member. We create 8 groups in a team. We evaluate and consider this model based on the change of the self-efficacy and number of sit-up activities.

This paper proposes a novel 'Application as a Sensor' (AaaS) approach for user attention status sensing in mobile and ubiquitous computing where user attends to ubicomp-related goal-directed tasks that usually involve in 'applications'. By using information in the application layer including application-specific knowledge on user's attention status while user manipulates applications on multiple mobile devices, the underlying system can sense user's current attention target and 'breakpoint' [1] that can be used for further attention-aware adaptation for maintaining user's productivity, in mobile devices, in real-time, without dedicated external psycho-physiological sensors. © 2014 IEEE.

LiveLabs is an urban scale research testbed in Singapore. It is currently in the process of design, implementation and deployment at real-life urban spaces like a sprawling university campus, a shopping mall, an airport and an amusement park; where real smartphone users are being incentivized to participate in large scale consumer behavioral trials and experiments. The scale of the testbed needs careful research on multiple aspects of mobile computing - including smart application and UI design, smartphone power management, handling user privacy and so on. In this demonstration paper, we outline some important aspects of ongoing research, for handling some key technical challenges of a real city-scale smartphone testbed. © 2014 IEEE.

In progressing ubiquitous computing where number of devices, applications and the web services are everincreasing, human user's attention is a new bottleneck in computing. This paper proposes Attelia, a novel middleware that senses user's attention status on user'ssmart phones in real-time, without any dedicated psycho-physiological sensors. To find better delivery timings of interruptive notifications from various applications and services to mobile users, Attelia detects breakpoint[16] of user's activity on the smart phones, with our novel "Application as a Sensor"(AsaS) approach and machine learning technique. Our initial evaluation of Attelia shows it can detect breakpoints of users with accuracy of 80 - 90%.
