The ability to estimate current affective statuses of web users has considerable potential towards the realization of user-centric opportune services. However, determining the type of data to be used for such estimation as well as collecting the ground truth of such affective statuses are difficult in the real world situation. We propose a novel way of such estimation based on a combinational use of user's web search queries and mobile sensor data. Our large-scale data analysis with about 11,000,000 users and 100 recent advertisement log revealed (1) the existence of certain class of advertisement to which mood-status-based delivery would be significantly effective, (2) that our "National Mood Score" shows the ups and downs of people's moods in COVID-19 pandemic that inversely correlated to the number of patients, as well as the weekly mood rhythm of people.

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd We present the results of our experiment aimed to comprehensively understand the combination of 1) how smartphone users interact with their notifications, 2) what notification content is considered important, 3) the complex relationship between the interaction choices and content importance, and lastly 4) establish an intelligent method to predict user's preference to seeing an incoming notification. We use a dataset of notifications received by 40 anonymous users in-the-wild, which consists of 1) qualitative user-labelled information about their preferences on notification's contents, 2) notification source, and 3) the context in which the notification was received. We assess the effectiveness of personalised prediction models generated using a combination of self-reported content importance and contextual information. We uncover four distinct user types, based on the number of daily notifications and interaction choices. We showcase how usage traits of these groups highlight the requirement for notification filtering approaches, e.g., when specific users habitually neglect to manually filter out unimportant notifications. Our machine learning-based predictor, based on both contextual sensing and notification contents can predict the user's preference for successfully acknowledging an incoming notification with 91.1% mean accuracy, crucial for time-critical user engagement and interventions.

With the advancements in ubiquitous computing, ubicomp technology has deeply spread into our daily lives, including office work, home and house-keeping, health management, transportation, or even urban living environments. Furthermore, beyond the initial metric of computing, such as “efficiency” and “productivity”, the benefits that people (users) benefit on a well-being perspective based on such ubiquitous technology has been greatly paid attention in the recent years. In our first “WellComp” (Computing for Well-being) workshop, we intensively discuss about the contribution of ubiquitous computing towards users' well-being that covers both physical, mental, and social wellness (and their combinations), from the viewpoints of various different layers of computing. Having strong international organization members in various ubicomp research domains, WellComp 2018 will bring together researchers and practitioners from the academia and industry to explore versatile topics related to wellbeing and ubiquitous computing.

In the advancing ubiquitous computing, users are increasingly confronted with a tremendous amount of information proactively provided via notifications from versatile applications and services, through multiple devices and screens in their environment. The human's attention is becoming a new significant bottleneck. Further, the latest computing trends with emerging new devices including versatile IoT devices, and contexts, such as smart cities and vehicles, are even accelerating this situation. In such situations, “attention management”, including attention representation, sensing, prediction, analysis, and adaptive behavior in the computer systems, are needed in our computing system. Following last years' successful UbiTtention 2016 and UbiTtention 2017 workshops with up to 50 participants, the UbiTtention 2018 workshop brings together researchers and practitioners from academy and industry to explore the management of human attention and notifications with versatile devices and smart situations to overcome information overload and overchoice.

By enabling driver mode on a smartphone, the smartphone can autonomously detect driving activities and suppress any incoming notifications so that drivers can focus on their attention on driving activities. However, the current driving mode implementations are limited in the fact that they frequently misjudge driving activities and also only have the option of nullifying all incoming notifications. In this work we present an improvement to this design and propose two major improvements to the current driving mode implementations: the first to improve driving activity detection and the second to diversify the notification mechanisms when the user is detected to be driving. While the work is still at its preliminary stages, we foresee this work as a meaningful effort to initiate the design of smartphone notification systems more tailored to the users' needs.

In this research, we propose a system that allows one to find a hidden spot that is scenic, yet unpopulated, with the intention of improving the satisfaction of one's trip. These hidden spots are not yet noted in the existing tourism services, however can provide a new place for the tourists to discover. We developed an application as a prototype to analyze and pinpoint hidden spots by using venue data from Foursquare [1]. We acquired 19,705 data around Tokyo and calculated the relative hiding spot degree. Thus, we made it possible to provide users with hidden spot information from smartphone application.

Towards wellbeing-awareness in computing, researches for estimating users' emotions using smartphone sensor data have been actively conducted as smartphones are getting more and more ubiquitous. Most studies have constructed emotion estimation models based on machine learning with contextual data from the smartphones and user's self-reporting ground truth label often collected via Experience Sampling Method (ESM). However, snice our emotion changes frequently in our daily lives, trying to collect the ground truth of such volatile emotions leads a storm of ESMs which could be burden to the users. In order to find better ESM methods, we propose and compare 3 ESMs, namely Randomized ESM that executes in randomly timings, Trigger ESM that executes when the user's behavior changes, and Unlocking ESM that sets up ESM on the unlocking screen. We constructed various emotional estimation models with four types of time granularity (1 day, 1/3 day, 3 hours, 1 hour) in four weeks experience with eight persons. As for the response rate, Unlocking ESM was the highest. In addition, it was clear that Unlocking ESM had the highest estimation accuracy in most cases.

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. Human attention has bottlenecked today's ubiquitous computing environment where users are consuming increasing amounts of information from numerous applications and services. Since the system-to-user provision of information is becoming more proactive, mainly via push notifications that often cause interruption at the users’ side, attention management is becoming very important. Despite the many existing studies concerned with detecting opportune moments to present such push information to the users (in a way that preserves the user's attention and lowers their cognitive load and frustration), there is little evaluation of such systems in the real-world production environments. Overlooked areas of study also include the examination of real users and notification contents. In this paper, we present various results from the first extensive evaluation on user's interruptibility and engagement in the real-world environment with a market-leading smartphone application that boasts a large number of users, including real notification content on the application. Following our previous mobile-sensing and machine learning-based interruptibility estimation approach, which was an effective study in its own right (Okoshi et al., 2015 [18,19]), we embedded a logic with the same approach in the “Yahoo! JAPAN” Android app (one of the most popular applications on the national market). The results from our large-scale in-the-wild user study (that included more than 680,000 users and spanned three weeks) indicate that, in most cases, delaying the notification delivery until an interruptible moment is detected is beneficial to users. The practice results in significant reduction of user response time (49.7%) when compared to delivering the notifications immediately. We observed a higher number of notifications opened in our system and constant improvement in user engagement levels throughout the entire study period. We also observed differences in click rates among different days and time among users with different attributes (e.g., age, gender, and occupation). Additional evaluation of our revised system, which can train and distribute different models for weekdays and weekends, improved the click rates during weekends. This negated the performance degradation previously observed during weekends.

We conducted multiple rounds of in-the-wild user studies with 86 cumulative total users for total duration of 5 weeks. In the advancing ubiquitous computing where users have been having an increasing amount of push-style information provision from lots of intelligent proactive services, detecting the users' current attentional status and/or in-terruptibility has been a significant issue. In our previous study[7] on interruptibility detection in "Yahoo! JAPAN" real world product for 21 days with more than 680,000 users, the result showed significant lower user response time in exchange for notification delivery delay for about 4 minutes on average. In this paper, we further analyze the features in the interruptibility detection model trained and updated during this study in nightly basis for 21 days and report the results. Investigating users' interruptibility as an indicator of his/her attention status has been essential in recent pervasive computing where the users' attention resources get scarce against ever increasing amounts of information. In this paper, we address research problems related to the users' available interruptibility, their physical activities, and their current locations and situations. We propose the 'Interruptibility Map', a geographical tool for analyzing and visualizing the user's local interruptibility status in the context of smart city research. Our map describes where citizens are expected to feel more or less interruptive against notifications produced by computing devices, which are known to have negative effects on work productivity, emotion, and psychological state. We conducted a continuous analysis from our previous research and a new additional in-the-wild user study for 2 weeks with 29 participants to investigate the relationship between one's interruptibility and their locations and situations. As a highlight of our findings, we found certain pairs of user activity change and a location that showed better interruptibility to users, such as an activity change of 'when user's riding car(bus) stops' in the bus commute situation.

In today's advancing ubiquitous computing age, with its ever-increasing amount of information from various applications and services available for consumption, the management of people's attention has become very important. In particular, the high volume of notifications on mobile devices has become a major cause of interruption of users. There has been much research aimed at detecting the opportune moment to present such information to users with in a way that lowers the cognitive load or frustration. However, evaluation of such systems in the real-world production environment with real users and notifications, and evaluation on user's engagement to the presented notification beyond simple responsiveness have not been adequately studied. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate user interruptibility and engagement using a real-world large-scale mobile application and real-world notifications consisting of actual news content. We equipped the Yahoo! JAPAN Android app, one of the most popular applications on the national market, with our mobile-sensing and machine-learning-based interruptibility estimation logic. We conducted a large-scale in-the-wild user study with more than 680,000 users for three weeks. The results show that in most cases delaying the notification delivery until an interruptible moment is detected is beneficial to users and results in significant reduction of user response time (49.7%) compared to delivering the notifications immediately. We also observed a higher number of notifications opened in our system as well as constant improvement in user engagement levels throughout the entire study period.

© 2016 ACM. Users of digital devices are increasingly confronted with a tremendous amount of notifications that appear on multiple devices and screens in their environment. Today many users own different ubiquitous devices such as a smartphone, a tablet, a notebook and a smartwatch. If an email client is installed on every device an incoming email produces up to four notifications - one on each device. In the future, we will receive notifications from an increasing number of ubiquitous devices. Therefore, we need smart attention management for incoming notifications as well as novel ways to present and interact with notifications. One way for a less interrupting attention management could be the use of ambient representations of incoming notifications. This workshop brings together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to explore how the flood of notifications on different computing devices and in smart environments can be managed, to avoid information overload.

This paper proposes ''SmileWave, a system for revealing smile-based emotional contagion, propagation effect of the similar emotion through smiley facial expression, on the social network where users interact each other through web-based user interface rather than in-person interaction. SmileWave is a picture-based networking service and detects the change of smile degree when the user looks at posted smile images of others. Our extensive user study with 50 participants for 30 days confirmed the emotional contagion effect on SmileWave. Users' smile degree improved by 27% when the user looked at posted smile images. The result also proved that there is a stronger effect on smile-based emotional contagion when the examinee and the person in the image are in close relationship.

As the amount of information to users increases with the trends of an increasing numbers of devices, applications, and web services, the new bottleneck in computing is human attention. To minimize users attentional overload, we propose a novel middleware "Attelia" that detects breakpoints of user's mobile interactions to deliver notifications adaptively. Attelia detects such timings in real-time, using only users phones, without any external sensors, and without any modifications to applications. Our extensive evaluation proved Attelias effectiveness. In-the-wild user study with 30 participants for 16 days showed that, specifically for the users with greater sensitivity for interruptive notification timings, notification scheduling in Attelia's breakpoint timing reduced users frustration by 28% in users' real smart phone environments.

Have you ever talked to fish? If you can incorporate the feelings of your fish into breeding systems, life with your fish can become more comfortable, fun, and a greater experience overall. In breeding pets, owners often cannot properly understand their pet's internal state, which can lead to impaired health-or worse, loss of life-for the pet. In case of fish, such situations are more likely to occur than with dogs or cats, since owner-pet communication is more difficult with fish. Although fish are the most bred pets [1], information and communications technology (ICT)-based solutions for accelerating owner-pet interaction have not yet been sufficiently explored. We present "TalkingNemo," an aquarium fish breeding system that enables interaction between owners and their fish. TalkingNemo detects the condition of fish and their aquarium via a camera and sensors attached to the aquarium, and notifies users with speech balloons as from the perspective of the fish (Figure 1). TalkingNemo empowers us to breed fish in good condition over a longer period. This paper introduces the architecture and evaluates the results of TalkingNemo.

We present QueueVadis, a system that addresses the problem of estimating, in real-time, the properties of queues at commonplace urban locations, such as coffee shops, taxi stands and movie theaters. Abjuring the use of any queuing-specific infrastructure sensors, QueueVadis uses participatory mobile sensing to detect both (i) the individual-level queuing episodes for any arbitrarily-shaped queue (by a characteristic locomotive signature of short bursts of "shuffling forward" between periods of "standing") and (ii) the aggregate-level queue properties (such as expected wait or service times) via appropriate statistical aggregation of multi-person data. Moreover, for venues where multiple queues are too close to be separated via location estimates, QueueVadis also uses a novel disambiguation technique to separate users into multiple distinct queues. User studies, performed with 138 cumulative total users observed at 23 different real-world queues across Singapore and Japan, show that QueueVadis is able to (a) identify all individual queuing episodes, (b) predict service and wait times fairly accurately (with median estimation errors in the 10%-20% range), independent of the queue's shape, (c) separate users in multiple proximate queues with close to 80% accuracy and (d) provide reasonable estimates when the participation rate (the fraction of QueueVadis-equipped people in the queue) is modest.

Recent technological trends on mobile/wearable devices and sensors have been enabling increasing number of people to collect and store their "lifelog" easily in their daily lives. Beyond exercise behavior change of individual user, our research focus is on the behavior change of teams, based on life-logging technologies and information sharing. In this paper, we propose and evaluate six different types of information sharing model among team members for their exercise promotion, leveraging concepts of "competition" and "collaboration". According to our experimental mobile web application for exercise promotion and extensive user study among 64 total users for three weeks, the model with "competition" technique resulted the most effective performance for competitive teams such as sport teams.

To minimize user cognitive load, we propose Attelia, a novel middleware that identifies breakpoints in user interaction and delivers notifications at these moments. Attelia works in realtime and uses only the mobile devices that users naturally use and wear, without any modifications to applications, and without any dedicated psycho-physiological sensors. Our evaluation proved the effectiveness of Attelia. A controlled user study showed that notifications at detected breakpoint timing resulted in 46% lower cognitive load compared to randomly-timed notifications. Furthermore, our 'in-the-wild' user study with 30 participants for 16 days further validated Attelia's value, with a 33% decrease in cognitive load compared to randomly-timed notifications.

We present Senbay, a novel smartphone-based platform for capturing and sharing synchronously-recorded video/sensor data stream using animated two-dimensional barcode. In the ubicomp environment, mobile devices have enabled us to capture video and various types of sensor data easily. However, currently we do not have a framework to instantly integrate video and those sensor data on smartphones and share them easily with other users on the net. In this paper, we present Senbay, a platform to integrate video and sensor data stream into single video on smartphones. With Senbay, sensor data stream will be embedded into a video as animated QR code in real-time, thus users can share the \sensor-federated" video easily on the web, through lots of popular video sharing services. This paper introduces the architecture and evaluation of Senbay and discusses future vision of the sensor-federated video sharing platform along with several applications.

In today's ubiquitous computing environment where users carry, manipulate, and interact with an increasing number of networked devices, applications and web services, human attention is the new bottleneck in computing. It is therefore important to minimize a user's mental effort due to notifications, especially in situations where users are mobile and using multiple wearable and mobile devices. To this end, we propose Attelia II, a novel middleware that identifies breakpoints in users' lives while using those devices, and delivers notifications at these moments. Attelia II works in real-Time and uses only the mobile and wearable devices that users naturally use and wear, without any modifications to applications, and without any dedicated psycho-physiological sensors. Our in-The-wild evaluation in users' multi-device environment (smart phones and smart watches) with 41 participants for 1 month validated the effectiveness of Attelia. Our new physical activity-based breakpoint detection, in addition to the UI Event-based breakpoint detection, resulted in a 71.8% greater reduction of users' perception of workload, compared with our previous system that used UI events only. Adding this functionality to a smart watch reduced workload perception by 19.4% compared to random timing of notification deliveries. Our multi-device breakpoint detection across smart phones and watches resulted in about 3 times greater reduction in workload perception than our previous system.

Currently, everyone can detect and store many life-log data very easily with the spread of smart phones or wearable devices and large scale data storage. Wide variety and large scale life-log data are very useful to self behavior change, medical care, education, and social analytics. Existing researches of human behavior change using life-log data focus on individual human behavior change. But nowadays everyone have communication equipment like smart phones. Group behavior change is very useful to keep workers' health in company and/or managing amount of practice in a sport team. Group has many kind of human relations, for example, manager and normal member. Therefore techniques for individual human behavior change is not effective to groups. The biggest aim of our research is to build the model of group behavior change. Specially, we focus on team behavior change. In this paper, we propose six types of group behavior model based on the "competition" and "collaboration" technique. We used encouraging team modification application in sports team and laboratory for keeping the sit-up exercise for 3 weeks. We evaluate and consider this model based on the change of the self-efficacy and number of sit-up activities.

Currently, everyone can detect and store many life-log data very easily with the spread of smart phones or wearable devices and large scale data storage. Wide variety and large scale life-log data are very useful to self behavior change, medical care, education, and social analytics. Existing researches of human behavior change using life-log data focus on individual human behavior change. But nowadays everyone have communication equipment like smart phones. Group behavior change is very useful to keep workers' health in company and/or managing amount of practice in a sport team. Group has many kind of human relations, for example, manager and normal member. Therefore techniques for individual human behavior change is not effective to groups. The biggest aim of our research is to build the model of group behavior change. Specially, we focus on team behavior change. In this paper, we propose six types of group behavior model based on the "competition" and "collaboration" technique. We used encouraging team modification application in sports team and laboratory for keeping the sit-up exercise for 3 weeks. Sit-up exercise is very important to preventing the injury and keep fit for the sport team and the laboratory member. We create 8 groups in a team. In progressing ubiquitous computing where number of devices, applications and the web services are everincreasing, human user's attention is a new bottleneck in computing. This paper proposes Attelia, a novel middleware that senses user's attention status on user'ssmart phones in real-time, without any dedicated psycho-physiological sensors. To find better delivery timings of interruptive notifications from various applications and services to mobile users, Attelia detects breakpoint[16] of user's activity on the smart phones, with our novel "Application as a Sensor"(AsaS) approach and machine learning technique. Our initial evaluation of Attelia shows it can detect breakpoints of users with accuracy of 80 - 90%.

© 2014 IEEE. Recent technological trends on mobile/wearable devices and sensors have been enabling increasing number of people to collect and store their 'life-logs' easily in their daily lives. Beyond exercise behavior change of individual user, our research focus is on the behavior change of teams, based on life-logging technologies and information sharing. In this paper, we propose and evaluate six different types of information sharing model among team members for their exercise promotion, leveraging concepts of 'competition' and 'collaboration'. According to our experimental mobile web application for exercise promotion and extensive user study among 64 total users for three weeks, the model with 'external competition' technique resulted the most effective performance for competitive teams such as sport teams.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of Focus, a system for effectively and efficiently reducing power consumption of OLED displays on smartphones. These displays, while becoming exceedingly common still consume significant power. The key idea of Focus is that we use the notion of saliency to save display power by dimming portions of the applications that are less important to the user. We envision Focus being especially useful during low battery situations when usability is less important than power savings. We tested Focus using 15 applications running on a Samsung Galaxy S III and show that it saves, on average, between 23 to 34% of the OLED display power with little impact on task completion times. Finally, we present the results of a user study, involving 30 participants that shows that Focus, even with its dimming behaviour, is still quite usable. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

Remote execution can transform the puniest mobile device into a computing giant able to run resource-intensive applications such as natural language translation, speech recognition, face recognition, and augmented reality. However, easily partitioning these applications for remote execution while retaining application-specific information has proven to be a difficult challenge. In this paper, we show that automated dynamic repartitioning of mobile applications can be reconciled with the need to exploit application-specific knowledge. We show that the useful knowledge about an application relevant to remote execution can be captured in a compact declarative form called tactics. Tactics capture the full range of meaningful partitions of an application and are very small relative to code size. We present the design of a tactics-based remote execution system, Chroma, that performs comparably to a runtime system that makes perfect partitioning decisions. Furthermore, we show that Chroma can automatically use extra resources in an overprovisioned environment to improve application performance.

In this paper, we present a new mobility-support model for applications, Application Module Request Broker (AMRB). We focus on two types of mobility: host mobility and application code mobility. These two types of mobility dynamically change the binding between applications name and location in the network. AMRB conceals these changes of binding to reduce a complexity in development of applications. In AMRB, we deal with mobile application codes that communicate with each other as Application Modules (AMs). AMRB provides AM's service transparent communication for applications by using a specifier which does not need to include any network location information. Furthermore, applications can use AM's service transparently of migration by exploiting location management mechanism. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of AMRB and some evaluations. Also, we demonstrate a sample application that AMRB is effective for developing mobile sensor type applications.

The agent dispatched by the user moves tdwards the host which holds the desired data, and retrieves the informaiton from the host. Then on the same host, the agent probcesses the data and converts the data suitable for output. After the agent comes back with the processed data, it shows the output in desired way. By using this system, users can be unconscious of their computer resources and the type of the desired data, and can browse information with more flexibility.

In,this research, we propose a software model for the dynamic distribution of software components across a wide-area network, and we provide a software environment to realize the proposed model. In the dynamic distributed software model, software modules can autonomously migrate among computers. This feature allowes dynamic distributed software to have the advantage of dynalnic load balancing, fault tolerance, scalability, optimization of computing environment, and the processing support for small-size portable devices. Moreover, we designed and implemented a dynamic distributed software toolkit named "Meta Space".

© 1999 IEEE. This paper proposes "MobileSocket" which realizes session layer communication continuity support for Java Applications towards the continuous operations for mobile applications. In the mobile computing environment where mobile hosts move around the network even during communications with the remote, maintenance of the communication continuity between the applications is significant. Not only mobility support but virtual circuit continuity support is required for communication continuity. Existing approaches have not provided the complete communication continuity for applications. "MobileSocket" is a user-level enhanced socket library written in Java, and provides library-based session layer mobility and virtual circuit continuity support for applications. Two mechanisms, dynamic socket switching (DSS) and the application layer window (ALW) were developed for MobileSocket and enable a simple implementation. The MobileSocket applications can be used in Java mobile applications and the agents, as well as for ordinary network applications. In this paper, after we clarify the communication continuity and existing approaches, we present the MobileSocket design, mechanism, and results of evaluation.
