In the present research, solid-state magnetic properties in pyrido and thiadizolo fused derivatives are discussed in connection with crystal polymorphism. Detailed magneto-structural correlation and effect of selective deuteration at tetramethyl group of NN moiety on solution ESR and solid-state magnetic property will also be discussed.

In the present research, we studied the modification method for 3-tert-butyl-1,5-diphenyl-6-oxoverdazyl by using the Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction. The reactions between 3-tert-butyl-1-(4-iodophenyl)-5-phenyl- or 3-tert-butyl-1,5-bis(4-iodophenyl)-6-oxoverdazyl and phenyl, 4-methoxyphenyl, 4-fluorophenyl and 2-thienylboronic acid were smoothly conducted, and mono-coupling products and bis-coupling products were obtained in good or moderate yield. From the visible spectra, absorptions at longest wavelength were red-shifted by the introducion of additional aryl groups, especially introduction of electron donating aryl groups showed larger red-shift than that of simple phenyl group due to the increase in HOMO-1 level. X-ray single crystal structural analysis for derivatives with additional phenyl and 4-fluorophenyl groups revealed pi-stacking between adjacent molecules. Their magnetic properties will also be discussed in connection with crystal structure.

Nitroxy radicals have been widely used as building blocks for molecular magnetic materials and paramagnetic ligands for metal-radical approach. As for aromatic nitroxyl radical derivatives, aryl tert-butylnitroxyl derivatives have been intensely investigated for such purposes. Diarylnixtoxyl also have interesting structural features from the point of delocalization of unpaired electron and close packing between aryl moieties. Although magneto-structural correlation of several diaryl nitroxyl derivatives have been reported, formation of extended magnetically coupled spin system have not been found. In the present research, several N,N-bis(tert-butylphenyl)nitroxyl radical was newly prepared. It formed 1-D staked column with separation below the sum of the Van del Waals radii. Its magnetic data in the solid state followed 1-D antiferromagnetic chain model. Detailed magneto-structural correlation of analogues will also be presented in connection with computational results.
