This paper presents an investigation on the effect of chamfered orifice inlet on magnetorheological (MR) fluid subjected to shock loading. Two different orifices (no chamfer and chamfered at 60 degrees angle on the inlet area) are used. The MR fluid is subjected to a shock loading, and the magnetic field is applied on the orifice area. Experiments have been conducted by measuring piston displacement, impact force and pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the orifice. Based on the experiment result, the effect of chamfered orifice inlet on MR fluid subjected to shock loading is discussed.

Magnetic fluid TLCD (MF-TLCD) is a novel type of semi-active damper in which the natural frequency can be controlled by applying magnetic field. We tuned the natural frequency of a column of magnetic fluid to excitation frequency, and demonstrated that the damping performance can improved compared with the case without magnetic field.

We conducted experiments on two-layer sloshing in a layered mixture of a magnetic fluid and silicone oil, and measured the dynamic pressure change using four pressure transducers. We also investigated the effect of excitation amplitude on natural frequency and on dynamic pressure change in the presence and absence of an applied magnetic field. Although the magnetic field altered the natural frequency, the change was almost constant even as the excitation amplitude was varied.

We designed a new semi-active Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) which uses Magnetic Fluid as its working fluid (MF-TLCD). We investigated the damping characteristics of MF-TLCD which has the two electromagnets, and considered transition of the natural frequency that is strongly related to the damping performance. We presented the momentum equation of MF-TLCD, and solved it numerically. Numerical results were compared with experimental results.

Ultrasonic propagation velocity in a magnetic fluid under compression was investigated. Ultrasonic propagation velocity in a magnetic fluid changed with the magnetic flux density and the compressive force. This change is related with cluster formation in a magnetic fluid. Experiment results indicated that cluster formation in a magnetic fluid seemed strongly affected by compressive force.

Relationship between heat transfer and the velocity distribution in the rectangular duct flow of a magnetic fluid under non-uniform magnetic field was investigated. In the case of laminar flow, heat transfer was largely enhanced by applying non-uniform magnetic field. This enhancement was larger than that of applying uniform magnetic field. This is because thermo-magnetic convection occurred by the effect of non-uniform magnetic field.

Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) is a kind of passive damping device which uses liquid column motion in a U-tube. We designed a new type of semi-active TLCD that uses a magnetic fluid as a working fluid. Two electromagnets were used and magnetic field was applied to both side of magnetic fluid column symmetrically. The frequency response of the structure with MF-TLCD was measured, and the influence of magnetic fields on the natural frequency of a magnetic fluid column was investigated.

An experimental approach based on the measurement of pressure at several points by small disc-type pressure transducers and the real-time computation of a discrete Fourier transform was used. We present the equation of motion of a MF-TLCD (Tuned Liquid Column Damper with a Magnetic Fluid), and solved it numerically using a 4th-order Runge-Kutta method. Using the numerical results, we demonstrate the frequency responses of a MF-TLCD and the effect of the magnetic field on the natural frequency of a MF-TLCD. We also compare numerical results with experimental results, and show that they are coincident qualitatively.

In this paper, we report experiment result of damping characteristic of different series of MR fluids when subjected to a shock loading. The MR fluids have different in the content of magnetic particle or volume fractions, which are 22% in MRF 122-EG and 32% in MRF 132-DG. From the experiment result, the effect of volume fraction of MR fluids on piston displacement, piston velocity and resistance force under shock loading can be analyzed.
