This paper reports an experimental study of applying pendulum theory to determine whether a rectangular model of a hull would overturn. A pontoon used as a non-self-navigating work vessel was considered in this study. Its model begins to list when an unbalanced load is applied. It can then either stabilize in an inclined state or continue overturning, throwing the unbalanced load midway, and finally stabilizing in the inverted position. In a mid-air experiment, this correlation was made between two motion scenarios, pendular or rotational motion. The two motions were reproduced by changing the distance between the hull center and the rotary axis and the mass of the weight. The experimental results closely matched those of an analytical analysis performed based on the Runge-Kutta method, which confirms the validity of the proposed analysis.

MR fluid is one of the functional fluids affected by the magnetic. When a magnetic field is applied to MR fluid, MR fluid can change its property because of clustering structure. We measure the ultrasonic propagation property through MR fluid under AC magnetic fields. We use two indexes: ultrasonic velocity change rate and attenuation rate. Based on the experimental results, we analyze the clustering structure in MR fluid.

We carry out theoretical and experimental study for the resistance force of MR fluid flow in a circular pipe. The purpose of this study is to calculate resistance of MR fluid based on the analysis and to compare the experimental results with the calculated results. The resistance force acting on a cylinder piston with tapered pin depends on the strength of magnetic field, tapered angle, etc. It is proved that the most dominant effect to the resistance force is magnetic field.

We investigated the free surface fluctuation of liquid in a rotating cylindrical container which receives horizontal vibration in the horizontal direction. In the experiments, we changed the oscillation frequency f and the rotation frequency. We measured time dependent pressure fluctuation instead of free surface fluctuation. By performing FFT analysis, two significant frequencies are obtained. We also examined these results using linear wave theory.

We investigated characteristics of water sloshing in a rotating, laterally oscillating, cylindrical container both theoretically and experimentally. In our experiment, the time-dependent dynamic pressure of the water on the wall rather than the free-surface displacement of the water was measured. We conducted a theoretical analysis to understand the experimental results. The swirling of water in the container had some frequency components; the frequency responses of each frequency component are examined.

We have investigated the free-surface fluctuations of liquid in a rotating, laterally oscillating, cylindrical vessel. We measured the time-dependent fluid-dynamic pressure instead of the free surface luctuations. From an FFT analysis of the dynamic pressure, we obtained two significant frequencies. They are associated, respectively, with waves that rotate in the same direction, and in the opposite direction, relative to the rotation of the vessel. We also examined these results using linearized wave theory.

We examined wave phenomena pertinent to water in a rotating, laterally oscillating cylindrical container. The swirling of water in the container had three frequency components; the frequency responses of each frequency component are reported herein. When swirling occurs in a rotating cylindrical container, it was found that the wave rotating in the same direction as the rotation of the cylindrical container and the wave rotating in the opposite direction to the cylindrical container exist at the same time. The swirling direction was determined by the relationship of these magnitude.

Knockdown pontoons with rectangular hulls are often used in work vessels during construction. In this paper, we present a novel method of construction that uses knockdown pontoons. The presented method is a self-dumping pontoon system in which the hull is overturned to unload the earth and sand. We model a series of hull movements as a rigid pendulum, thus developing new model equations and solving them by the Runge-Kutta method. Model experiments were also performed, and the calculation results are in agreement with the experiment results. Lastly, we discuss the criteria for hull overturn in detail.

水平直線方向に振動しながら垂直軸回りを回転する円筒容器内の液体の挙動を調べた。円筒容器内壁に設置した圧力センサで水圧を測定することで，スロッシングが生じた時の液体の自由表面の変位を調べた。スワーリング発生時に圧力センサが測定した水圧変動をFFT解析した。その結果から，容器の回転方向に対して同じ方向と逆方向に回転する２種類の波が同時に存在し，その大小関係によって見かけ上のスワーリングの方向が決まるという事を明らかにした。

　View Summary

This study reports the theoretical and experimental resistance force of MR fluid in a pipe that changes depending on a magnetic field. We used Bingham plastic model to represent the dynamic behavior of MR fluid flow in a circular pipe under a magnetic field theoretically. Analytical results indicate that the radius of a pipe has a major effect on the resistance force. We conducted the drop impact test to verify our theoretical approach. The resistance force of MR shock absorber was changed depending on a magnetic field and the radius of the pipe as indicated in theoretical results. We also conducted the flow experiment of MR fluid at a constant flow rate and compared experimental results and analytical results quantitatively.

The magnetic particles in an MR fluid form clusters parallel to the direction of the applied magnetic field, and yield stress is generated. As a result, the apparent viscosity of the MR fluid increases. We proposed a new easy-to-operate technique to calculate the attitude of the floating body with various shapes and/or large inclined angles. 　View Summary

Free surface movement of water in a rotating, laterally oscillating cylindrical container was qualitatively investigated. Time-dependent dynamic pressure was measured instead of free surface displacement. The swirling direction was determined by forcing the frequency and rotating direction of the cylindrical container. The swirling direction was opposite to that of the rotating cylindrical container when the forcing frequency was less than the resonant frequency, whereas the crest of the free surface swirled in the same direction as that of the rotating cylindrical container when the forcing frequency greatly increased. Unstable swirling occurred at the resonant frequency, but it disappeared as the rotating frequency increased.

We used Bingham plastic model to represent the dynamic behavior of MR fluid flow in a circular pipe with tapered metering pins under a magnetic field theoretically. Since MR fluid has yield stresses, the flow is divided into two regions; shear and plug flows. We revealed the relationship between the damping force of MR shock absorber and an applied magnetic field. Analytical results indicated that the radius of a pipe and the velocity of the piston effect on the damping force. We conducted drop impact tests and compared experimental results with analytical results. The comparison results indicated that the effect of magnetic field on the damping force depends on the development of the flow, and that the effect increases in a developing flow.

We proposed a mechanical model of MR fluid pipe flow and compared with the experiment results of the flow under an impact load, and conducted drop impact tests with four types of tapered metering pins and qualitative analysis of effects of the pins. The results show that the shape of the pins has some effect on the entire shock absorption process whereas magnetic field strength affects the post-peak behavior only, and shock absorption with a longer tapered pin is more widely controllable by magnetic field.

Forced convective heat transfer of turbulent magnetic fluid flow is remarkably suppressed by applying magnetic field. The result shows that the suppression becomes stronger by applying stronger magnetic field, but is saturated at a certain strength of magnetic field. This suppression depends on not only magnetic field intensity but also flow condition. The relationship among heat transfer, magnetic field intensity and flow condition was discussed.

Streamwise variation of the suppressed turbulent diffusion of magnetic fluid flow in downstream of the magnetic field region was investigated experimentally. Reynolds number based on hydraulic diameter and bulk mean velocity were varied from 6400 to 14300, and magnetic field was applied up to 500 mT. The result shows that the recovery of suppressed heat transfer in downstream of the magnetic field region is strongly related with flow velocity and magnetic field intensity. Distance for recovering the suppressed turbulent diffusion from the magnetic field region becomes shorter in larger Reynolds number flow. The relationship among the recovery distance of the suppressed turbulent diffusion, magnetic body force and inertial force of the flow was discussed.

Using four types of tapered metering pins, we conducted drop impact tests and a qualitative analysis of effects of the pins on MR fluid with a magnetic field applied around an orifice area. The tapered metering pins changed the piston stroke. The results indicate that the shape of the pins has some effect on the overall shock absorption process whereas magnetic field strength affects the post-peak behavior only. These results show that a tapered metering pin has applicability to shock absorbers using an MR fluid.

We performed vibration experiments for three types of U-pipes, and obtained the following results: (1) The shape of the bottom and elbow of the U-pipe has no influence on the natural frequency change of an MF-TLCD (Magnetic-Fluid Tuned Liquid Column Damper) when a magnetic field is applied. (2) When using a U-pipe with an elbow with a larger curvature, it is possible to reduce the damping force on the liquid column and improve MF-TLCD performance.

Magnetic fluid tuned liquid column damper (MF-TLCD) is a kind of semi-active damper that uses magnetic fluid as its working fluid. We quantitatively investigated the damping coefficient generated by the flow of magnetic fluid, which is strongly related to the damping performance. Three kind of U-pipes that have each different shape ((1) conventional (2) equipped with an orifice (3) curved fluently) were prepared and single-degree-of-freedom oscillation was performed with each those pipes. Finally, we discussed the effect to the damping performance of MF-TLCD induced by various damping coefficient subjected to magnetic field and configurations of those U-pipes.

Forced convective heat transfer and flow resistance of rectangular duct flow of a magnetic fluid by applying non-uniform magnetic field was investigated experimentally. One characteristic result shows that heat transfer is largely enhanced by applying non-uniform magnetic field in the laminar flow regime. Comparing with the result with applying uniform magnetic field, heat transfer enhancement is larger than that with applying uniform magnetic field. This seems that thermal convection excited by applying non-uniform magnetic field strongly affects the heat transfer.

This paper presents experimental analysis of magnetorheological fluid (MRF) under alternating magnetic fields. The experiments were conducted under alternating magnetic fields. MRFs of different volume fraction of two types were used in this study. This paper reports experimental studies about anisotropy and attenuation as characteristics of ultrasonic propagation in a magnetorheological fluid (MRF) under AC magnetic fields. Parameters of this studies are magnitude of AC magnetic fields, frequencies of AC magnetic fields and angles between directions of ultrasonic propagation and magnetic field. As results of change rate of sound velocity, MRF has characteristics of time dependence, frequencies dependence and anisotropy under AC magnetic fields. Also, length of clusters in MRF became short with increase of frequencies of AC magnetic fields. The clusters in MRF are formed along the magnetic force under AC magnetic fields. Attenuation decreased with increase of the angles between directions of ultrasonic propagation and magnetic field. But, attenuation did not change with increase of frequencies of AC magnetic fields.

The ultrasonic velocity profiler was used to investigate the influence of non-uniform magnetic field on the velocity distribution of the rectangular duct flow of a magnetic fluid. The results showed that the flow velocity at the upper-leaning side from the center of the duct increased and the velocity gradient at only the bottom wall side, which electromagnet exists, decreased in the laminar flow. In contrast, in the case of turbulent flow, not only velocity gradient but also flow velocity near the center of the duct hardly changed by applying magnetic field. This is because magnetic field intensity is not so strong that the velocity distribution is affected.

The effect of magnetic field on two-layer sloshing with magnetic fluids and silicone oil were studied. Frequency-pressure response was recorded to conduct research. The permanent magnets were placed near the interface of two fluids. The resonant frequencies were changed by the positions of the magnets, the type of magnets, and the direction of the magnetic field. This study shows the possibility that two-layer fluid sloshing with magnetic fluids can be controlled by the intensity and the direction of magnetic field.

Frequency response analysis of a tuned liquid column damper using magnetic fluid (MF-TLCD) based on a linearized method was presented. An MF-TLCD alters the natural frequency of the magnetic fluid column that forms the resident liquid inside the MF-TLCD by applying a magnetic field. The interaction equations of motion under a harmonic type of loading for SDOF damped structure and liquid surface motion in a MF-TLCD were expressed. The damping term induced by liquid flows and the magnetic force term were linearized to derive analytical solutions. The analytical results were compared with experimental results.

This paper presents an investigation on the effect of chamfered orifice inlet on magnetorheological (MR) fluid subjected to shock loading. Two different orifices (no chamfer and chamfered at 60 degrees angle on the inlet area) are used. The MR fluid is subjected to a shock loading, and the magnetic field is applied on the orifice area. Experiments were conducted by using two different magnetic fields and various pressures. The ultrasonic propagation velocity changed with the application of magnetic fields and pressure. The change was related to cluster formation in the MF fluid. Based on the experimental results, the effect of pressure on the inner structure in MF was analyzed.

We present the equation of motion of a MF-TLCD (Tuned Liquid Column Damper with a Magnetic Fluid), and solved it numerically using a 4th-order Runge-Kutta method. Using the numerical results, we demonstrate the frequency responses of a MF-TLCD and the effect of the magnetic field on the natural frequency of a MF-TLCD. We also compare numerical results with experimental results, and show that they are coincident qualitatively.

Experiments have been performed with a closed-circuit loop with the rectangular duct having square cross-section for the test section. In case of laminar flow, when the magnetic field is applied to magnetic fluid, heat transfer was drastically enhanced locally in the region where the magnetic field exists. This heat transfer becomes large with increasing magnetic field and is saturated with applying more than 400 mT of magnetic field. In addition, velocity distribution of magnetic fluid flow also changed under magnetic field. On the contrary, in the case of turbulent flow, local heat transfer coefficient ratio does not increase but slightly decreases. This is because turbulent diffusion is largely suppressed by the magnetic field.

We proposed a qualitative analysis of these effects by measuring properties of ultrasonic propagation. Hysteresis was appeared when magnetic field increased to and decreased from the certain value, 290 mT in our experiment. However, it was kept almost the same value during the decreasing process.

The rheological response of magnetorheological fluid (MRF) results from the polarization induced in the suspended particles by application of an external magnetic field. Characteristics of an MRF depend on the volume faction, that is the percentage of magnetic particles in the carrier liquid. We propose a qualitative investigation of these volume fraction effects by measuring properties of ultrasonic wave propagation velocity in MRFs having various volume fractions. The ultrasonic wave propagation velocity changes under the effect of an external magnetic field as a result of arrangement of clusters along the direction of the field in the MRF.

Applying magnetic field changes properties of a magnetorheological (MR) fluid. A fascinating occurrence so called hysteresis in the MR fluid appears when the magnetic field is increased to and decreased from a certain value. This occurrence appears to be influenced by the formation of clusters in proportion to the magnetic field intensity and its direction. Results show that the hysteresis in MR fluid is changes when the direction of ultrasonic measurement also changes. The change of hysteresis curve is related to the cluster formation.

A natural frequency of a tuned magnetic fluid damper (TMFD) changes in a mganetic field. Change of the natural frequency of the TMFD with a coaxial cylindrical container is smaller than that with a cylindrical container. The natural frequency of the TMFDs varies according to a theory of the cylindrical container qualitatively. When a maximum supplied current to an electromagnet is constant, a variation area of the natural frequency does not change linearly with a radius-ratio of a inner and a outer cylinders. There is an optimum radius-ratio in the TMFD with the coaxial cylindrical container.
