As one of the important aerodynamic problems of magnetic disk drives for microcomputers, a flow between shrouded corotating disks and its instability have been investigated. The four-decker circular disk pack is enclosed in a cylindrical container to endure the axial symmetry. Mean and fluctuating velocity fields induced by the disk rotation has been obtained by employing fine scale multi-sensor hot-wire probes. First, the velocity distributions of 2D axisymmetric base flow field are reported. The occurrence of 3D non-axisymmetric flow will then be discussed, where the rotational speed as well as the number of cells will be discussed and compared with the existing data.

As a part of the laboratory experiment on a microburst, the circumferential instability and the associated instantaneous velocity field of a vortex ring impinging onto a normal wall have been investigated. Vortex rings have been generated at the circular orifice by the impulsive motion of the speaker corn and have been visualized by filling ethylene glycol smoke. The instantaneous velocity fields induced by a vortex ring were measured by employing the PIV in which the cross correlation method was used. The wave number of the circumferential instability increases with an increase of the initial Reynolds number. The wave number at the same initial Reynolds number decreases as the distance from the orifice increases. It was shown that the development of induced secondary vortex ring influences the change of velocity vector fields.

This paper reports on the influence of Coriolis force on the heat transfer characteristics in rotating laminar boundary layer. The experiments have been conducted for the mean flow velocity U8=4.0m/s and the angular velocity Ω=4.6 rad/s, and the heat flux has been applied uniformly over the plate. Liquid crystal method is applied to measuring the surface temperature distribution. The results indicate that heat transfer has been enhanced on the pressure surface. The velcity measurements show that Coriolis instability induces the counter-rotating longitudinal vortices which argument the heat transfer from the pressure surface. On the other hand, the heat transfer from the suction surface remains unchanged as compared to the no-rotating case, which is due to the Coriolis force that stabilizes the boundary layer. As a consequence, the averaged heat transfer coefficient is higher on the pressure surface than that on the suction surface and the stationary wall by approximately 40%.
