  • Changes in Communicative Interpersonal Distance Caused by the Global Standardization of Social Distance: A Japan-US Comparison of Comfortable and Appropriate Proxemics in the Post-Corona Era

    Kyoko INOUE

The Japanese Journal of Language in Society (The Japanese Association of Sociolinguistic Sciences)  28 ( 1 ) 159 - 169 2025.09

Research paper (scientific journal), Single Work, Lead author,  ISSN  1344-3909

     View Summary

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the standard for interpersonal distance, which can have a huge and long-lasting impact on human communication behavior. By investigating the situation in regions where contact culture (cultures with close interpersonal distance during communication) and non-contact culture were classified before the COVID-19 pandemic, we can determine people's sense of interpersonal distance — that is, how much distance is needed for people to feel comfortable, and how smoothly communication takes place. Diachronic research is needed to ascertain the complete impact of the pandemic on people’s communication behavior as well as the possibility of whether they will return to the pre-corona values of proximity they had shared among the community members. This paper introduces several field studies conducted immediately after the pandemic subsided (2023) in Japan and the US, two countries in which Hall's (1966) proxemics study showed significant differences in people’s distance perception. The result suggests that the degree of intimacy and the use of open space lead to conditions that influence changes in people’s communication behavior. Furthermore, in cooperation with researchers from the architectural field, we attempt to explore spatial designs that people find comfortable and appropriate.

  • <Special Lecture> Measuring Comfortable and Appropriate Space Through Language: Post-COVID Proxemics

[Domestic presentation]  49th Annual Conference, The Japanese Association of Sociolinguistic Sciences (Keio University, Mita Campus) ,

    2025.03

    Oral presentation (invited, special)

     View Summary

This lecture presents a couple of case studies based on field research conducted in 2023—immediately following the end of the COVID-19 pandemic—in Japan and the United States, the two countries where E. T. Hall (1966) identified significant differences in perceived distance in his proxemics research. In particular, the focus of the talk is environmental factors that influence changes in communication behavior in Japan. It will also comment on efforts to explore spatial designs that people find comfortable and appropriate, in collaboration with the architectural field.
