Profile Summary 【 Display / hide

  • My research examines the roles and development of visual elements including decoration, illustration and colours of manuscripts and printed books produced in fifteenth-century Europe. I aim to understand the impact of the invention of typography in creating new visual vocabularies of the book, some of which have survived to this day. My recent interests include colours, pigments and inks used in fifteenth-century books. I am also interested in employing digital technology for my research.

     View Summary

A survey into university students' knowledge levels of science at Keio University was conducted among 1st and 2nd-year students of the Faculties of Letters, Economics, Law, and Commerce (so-called non-scientific faculties), and 1st-year students of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The survey was carried out in May 2022, and the number of responses is 238 (52.1% response rate) for the non-scientific faculties and 249 (49.1% response rate) for the Faculty of Science and Technology. In addition to the knowledge and interest in 36 scientific terminologies, we surveyed inferiority complexes toward physics and science and compared the survey results with those mainly from 10 years ago. The media for acquiring scientific knowledge has changed dramatically from newspapers to the Internet. There was almost no change in the age when students developed inferiority complexes from 10 years ago. In the non-scientific faculties, Economics and Commerce students who took mathematics entrance exams had few complexes in physics, whereas in the Faculty of Science and Technology, those majoring in Chemistry and Life Sciences had high complexes in physics. There was an increase in the percentage of students who do not have complexes in physics regardless of whether they are men or women. In particular, the proportion of women who do not have complexes in physics has increased significantly, with 1.4 times more in the Faculty of Science and Technology, and 2.0 times more in the non-scientific faculties. Knowledge of RNA and the quantum computer has increased, as well as the interest in the latter. Surprisingly, interest decreased in most of the scientific terminologies.

  • Printing or not Printing Colour in the Early Mainz Presses

    Mayumi Ikeda

    (Warsaw) ,

    2022.06

Oral presentation (general), Institute of Art History, University of Warsaw

     View Summary

The aim of the conference is to initiate more extensive comparative research on the phenomenon of colour printing and print colouring so that the significance of colour in prints, reflected by a variety of cultural, political, social, economic and confessional backgrounds, can be better understood. We hope to contextualize local experiments with colour printing and the role of colourists in the adaptation of prints to local needs and tastes. A transregional overview will enable us to gain an understanding of the mobility of printmakers and the role it played in the transfer of know-how as well as the mobility of the prints, which were often professionally or amateurishly coloured far from their original printing site. This approach also opens up the possibility of incorporating less studied regions into the ongoing, quickly developing studies on colour printing and print colouring, which so far have been focused mainly on the print production in Western and Central Europe.

This symposium brings together five perspectives on the exhibition “Gutenberg & After: Europe’s First Printers 1450–1470.” Leading specialists in printing history and book collecting will explore the development of the first European printing types, the publication of church indulgences in the 1450s, the earliest efforts to decorate multiple printed books by hand, the rediscovery of the origins of European printing in the 18th century, and the contributions of American collectors, including the Scheide family, to the study of the typographic achievements of the 15th century.
