4回目を迎えた本講座は、いよいよフィレンツェの黄金時代ともいわれるルネサンス期に入っていく。セミナーでは、まず15世紀の幕開けを飾る彫刻作品を紹介した。1401年に開催されたフィレンツェ洗礼堂門扉装飾のためのコンクールで、審査課題となった《イサクの犠牲》である。新たな時代を迎えた町の雰囲気やフィレンツェ人が好んだ様式について解説した。さらに、当時たいへんな人気を博した《トビアスと天使》という主題を取り上げ、なぜフィレンツェでルネサンスが花開いたか、また、セミナー後半には、フィレンツェを美しき芸術の都にした立役者メディチ家のコジモについて詳しく解説した。

1514年にアルブレヒト・デューラーが制作した銅版画には、頬杖をついた有翼の女性が表されています。画面左上方の蝙蝠の部分には《メランコリアⅠ》と書かれ、本作品が「憂鬱」と関連するものであることを示しています。一体この女性は何をしているのでしょうか。また、彼女は「憂鬱」といかなる関係を結んでいるのでしょうか。本講演では、哲学者クリバンスキー、美術史家ザクスル及びパノフスキーの歴史的な研究成果を参照しながら、西洋における「憂鬱」という概念の変遷を図像と共にご紹介し、《メランコリアⅠ》に関する謎を分かり易く解き明かしていきます。

Giorgio Vasari scrisse nelle sue Vite che “(Filippino Lippi) fu il primo, il quale ai moderni mostrasse il nuovo modo di variare gli abiti…” Questa notazione del Vasari ci mette sull’avviso che il pittore fiorentino del primo Rinascimento, Filippino Lippi (1457-1504), rivolse una particolare attenzione agli abbigliamenti dei personaggi che comparivano nelle sue opere.
La mia presentazione mira a chiarire come il pittore avesse suggerito il vero tema della lunetta nella Cappella Carafa nel transetto della basilica di Santa Maria sopra Minerva a Roma, dipingendo con arguzia il motivo del cagnolino che addenta il vestito di un bambino mettendolo quasi a nudo.

Absent Monogram and Repressed Memory: The Disputed Legitimacy of Saint Bernardino of Siena in Late Fifteenth-Century Rome

Niccolo di Manno Bufalini commissioned the Umbrian painter Bernardo Pintoricchio to decorate his family chapel in Santa Maria in Ara Coel in Rome. From 1482 to 1484, the painter executed in it a fresco cycle of the life of saint Bernardino of Siena (1380-1444). My study aims to explain why saint Bernardino’s main attribute, the IHS monogram with rays emanating from it, which had been invented by the saint himself and utilized in his sermons, was not depicted on the altar wall of the Bufalini Chapel. Daniel Arasse already pointed out in 1974 that the IHS monogram was intentionally omitted from the depiction of saint Bernardino’s Glory on this wall, although it was commonly part of the subject at that time, and suggested that it would have evoked to contemporary viewers, especially in Rome, accusations of heresy that had been constantly leveled against the saint.

フィリッピーノ・リッピは、初期ルネサンスを代表する大画家フラ・フィリッポ・リッピの息子です。父亡き後は、ボッティチェッリの工房に学びました。同時代の人々はフィリッピーノの芸術を高く評価し、その名声は時にボッティチェッリのそれを脅かすほどでした。没後、いったん彼への関心は減退しますが、近年になって再び脚光を浴びている注目の画家です。本講座では、フィリッピーノの画業についてボッティチェッリとの関わりを中心にご紹介します。また、フィリッピーノの芸術が再評価される過程についても美術史家たちの言葉を頼りに考察します。

本発表は、西洋美術史における画像の否定・破壊・不在に関わる事象の思想的な枠組を考察するものである。主に、ビザンティン帝国で8-9世紀に展開された聖像否定運動をはじめとするイコノクラスム・14世紀のトスカーナ美術をめぐるトラウマ・15世紀ローマの礼拝堂壁画制作におけるタブーを取り上げ、各事象の比較を通じて、表象不可能性の実態に迫りたい。

中世末期の一大カタストロフとされる1348年のペストは、イタリアのみならずヨーロッパ中で猛威をふるい、多くの人命を奪った。ヨーロッパの人口は6分の１に減少したとも言われる。本発表ではまず、14世紀のペストの流行と美術がの関係について、新たな図像の誕生や聖セバスティアヌス信仰の隆盛といった具体例を紹介する。さらに、ペストと絵画の関係にいち早く注目した中世美術史家ミラード・ミースの著作（『ペスト後のイタリア絵画』1951年）及びそれに再考を迫った岡田温司氏の論考（『ミメーシスを超えて――美術史の無意識を問う』2000年）をふまえ、病や死に対する14世紀の人々の反応を多角的に検討する。すべての人間が免れ得ない病や死という主題であればこそ、過去の美術に関わる現象の考察が現代の我々に直接関わる問題として立ち現われてくるだろう。
