    わずか50年ほどの英国の舞台道化の繁栄について、笑いに対する考え方の変遷を確認し、道化役者の特質を分析して議論した。特に、道化を生み出すファクターとして、笑話集の隆盛とスター道化役者の存在に着目し、笑話集のモチーフが書き換えられて芝居の笑いを作り出したことを検証し、さらにそれと同じ理由をもって、芝居に描かれる道化が消えてゆく過程を論じたものである。
