  • Economic performance and supply chains: The impact of upstream firms' waste output on downstream firms' performance in Japan

A novel application of input-output analysis is used to statistically map out average levels of generation of unwanted solid and liquid waste materials and also greenhouse gases along manufacturing supply chains for the final demand products of manufacturing industries in Japan. One key finding is that assembler dominated manufacturing supply chains have different within-chain waste generation patterns than manufacturing supply chains that are not assembler dominated. A second key finding is that assemblers with suppliers that produce less waste tend also to have better economic performance. This suggests that for manufacturing supply chains in Japan at least, the adoption by a downstream assembler of green procurement policies can improve both environmental and economic performance. This in turn suggests that both the private sector and public policies aimed at reducing manufacturing waste should take account of the incentives for achieving waste reduction all along a supply chain of a downstream assembler or other focal firm in a position to coordinate product/service flows, knowledge flows, information flows and flows of funds within a supply chain. Japanese firms expanded their outward foreign direct investment (FDI) rapidly in the emerging economies in Asia in the post-1990 period. The Japanese public feared that companies would increasingly rely on cheaper foreign workers and that large numbers of home country workers would find their responsibilities, and hence their earnings, dwindling over time. However, using several recent data sets on workers in firms with and without FDI investments, we show that workers received earnings premiums if they were with firms that engaged in outward FDI involving ownership of at least 50% in some foreign firm. Higher ranked workers benefited more, but even some non-managerial workers did benefit as well. These wage benefits crucially depend on the level of ownership in FDI projects. Increased foreign employment, on the other hand, did not benefit workers' wages except those in the highest ranks. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

  • Greenhouse gas emissions in Canada and Japan: Sector-specific estimates and managerial and economic implications

     View Summary

Many firms generate large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases when they burn fossil fuels in their production processes. In addition, production of raw materials and other inputs the firms procure for their operations also generates greenhouse gases indirectly. These direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions occur in many sectors of our economies. In this paper, we first present sector-specific estimates for such greenhouse gas emissions. We then show that estimates for such sector-specific greenhouse gas emissions are often required for various types of corporate as well as public policy analyses in both domestic and international contexts. Measuring greenhouse gas emissions resulting from firms' multi-stage production processes in a multi-sector context is relevant for policies related to the Kyoto protocol, an international agreement to limit global greenhouse gas emissions. For example, since the protocol allows firms to engage in trading and offsetting of their greenhouse gas emissions across national borders, provided that emissions are correctly measured, the firms can take advantage of such trading schemes by placing their energy-intensive production facilities globally and strategically. We present several case studies which illustrate the importance of this and other aspects of greenhouse gas emissions in firms' environmental management. We also argue that our modeling and estimation methods based on input-output analyses are suitable for the types of research goals we have in this paper. Our methods are applied to data for Canada and Japan in a variety of environmental management circumstances. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we appraise sustainable household consumption from a global perspective. Using per capita energy requirements as an indicator of environmental pressure, we focus on the importance of income growth in a cross-country analysis. Our analysis is supported by a detailed within-country analysis encompassing five countries, in which we assess the importance of various socioeconomic-demographic characteristics of household energy requirements. We bring together family expenditure survey data, input-output tables, and energy statistics in a multivariate analysis. Instead of a uniform Kuznet's curve, we find that the effect of increasing income varies considerably across countries, even when controlling for socioeconomic and demographic variations. The latter variables show similar influences, but differing importance across countries. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
