    We use a panel data set of Japanese firms from 2005 to 2019 to examine how a firm’s employee age structure affects its productivity and wages. The pooled ordinary-least-squares (OLS) results indicate a negative relationship between the proportion of older employees and labor productivity. However, the effects disappear after applying a fixed effects (FE) model and the generalized method of moments to consider the unobserved heterogeneity among firms. Moreover, the proportion of older employees does not significantly affect firms’ wages. We further examine firm heterogeneity as a factor that contributes to the difference between the pooled OLS and FE estimates. The results suggest that differences in corporate stakeholder characteristics and corporate governance, such as the presence of labor unions and proportion of foreign ownership, may be related to the ratio of older workers and corporate performance.

  • Is Remote Working a Magic Wand? Geographic Differences in the Feasibility of Working from Home and Women’s Employment

    This study finds that the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected the number of jobs on offer while causing a slight reduction in employment and wage rates in Japan. In particular, the high feasibility of working from home has positively affected the number of offered part-time jobs and negatively affected the offered wages for full-time jobs. Work-from-home culture gained popularity across Japan during the pandemic; it was expected to have a positive impact on women-friendly work environments and curb women’s migration from rural to urban areas. However, jobs with greater feasibility of working from home are offered in urban areas than in rural areas. Furthermore, municipalities that offer more jobs that women tend to work and municipalities that offer a limited variety of occupations provide less opportunities of working from home. In Japan, hybrid working has become more popular than full remote work. Therefore, solely promoting a remote work environment is excessive expectation; we need to ensure its effectiveness.

  • Effects of Minimum Wage Changes on Labor Demand

    We examine the effects of changes in minimum wage (MW) on labor demand and whether its impact varies with regional differences, using job advertisement data in Japan. We find that the increase in the number of jobs offered above the MW exceeds the decrease below the MW. The total growth is approximately 7–10%. Without waiting for a new MW, the job offers above the MW will increase. Furthermore, our findings show that the more monopsony the labor market is, the more jobs are offered, owing to an increase in MW.
