Profile Summary 【 Display / hide 】

  • 専門分野は宗教人類学で、フィールドは、スリランカ、南インド、中国貴州省、日本各地などである。スリランカでは1980年に南部のサバラガムワ州の農村に住み込んで世界観や人生観、社会変化の動態を調査研究した。1983年にシンハラ人とタミル人の対立が激化してからは、ナショナリズムの問題にも取り組むことになった。同じ時期に南インドのケーララ州とカルナータカ州で祭祀や演劇を調査し現在まで継続している。1981年に海南島と雲南に入ったことを契機に中国南部の少数民族研究に取り組むことになった。貴州省では1983年以来、ミャオ族の暮らしの変化や文化の動態を追いかけてきた。一方で、自らの生き方の根源を知るために、日本各地の山岳信仰と修験道、祭祀や芸能の調査を1973年以来継続している。最近は、文化遺産や観光開発の研究も視野に入れるようになった。アジア各地での異文化研究と日本研究の二つを併存させて、自己を知り他者を知る挑戦を続けている。
