• I am studying 'landscape history,' a transdisciplinary perspective articulating historical ecology with historical anthropology, which can explore historical entanglement within a present landscape of island Oceania that has continually and contingently been changed. One of key aspects is entanglement between two agencies, human and nature, which will be challenged by geoarchaeology along with paleobotany, paleo coral studies, zooarchaeology and physical anthropology, within the long timescale of 100 to 1000 year order. Another aspect is encounter and entanglement of various social groups, in particular which should have frequently arisen within the past 300 years of the colonial and the post-colonial settings. Archaeology will play a role of intermediary, which has been long in concert with geoscience, cultural and historical anthropology, and it can cooperate with modern art history of artists visiting and viewing insular landscapes of Oceania and south-sea's carvings inspiring their creative urges.

• I am interested in landscape history of island Oceania, which needs transdisciplinary perspective, and so I am going on discussions with many scholars from other domains. Some of them are worked with me in the present research project of Pukapuka Atoll, the Northern Cooks in Polynesia. We are now concerned with social resilience of Oceanic atolls from climatic disasters, and I focus on the past tropical cyclones hitting Pukapuka from historical and archaeological perspectives.

  I have been concerned with geoarchaeological studies of Oceania and the Yaeyama Islands, Japan, to disentangle dynamic interactions between two agencies, natural and human, in the island landscape. My research project of Pukapuka Atoll, Nothern Cooks, is now in progress. I'm also interested in historical and museum anthropology of the Oceanic arts collected in the colonial period from the mid-18th century to the early 20th century.

  © 2018 Elsevier Ltd The sediments of Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands, consist of bioclastic materials, including foraminifera and coral debris. The sedimentary depth profiles of elements showed that various elements including zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) were enriched in the upper layers of the islands of Majuro Atoll. Carbon-14 dating revealed that the sedimentation of the upper layer was completed before 1670 and 542 cal BP in Laura and Calalen, respectively. The enriched elements could be categorized by their origins: (a) terrestrial elements transported as dust (aluminum (Al) and rare earth elements (REEs)); (b) anthropogenic elements (Zn and Cu); and (c) elements supplied by seabirds (phosphorus (P)). From the results of the total amount of Al supplied to sediments for ca. 2000 years, Al in Majuro Atoll was suggested to be airborne origin. The enrichment factors of the elements normalized to Al concentration of continental crust showed that REEs were also transported as dust, while Zn and Cu were mainly of anthropogenic origin. The speciation analysis by X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) showed the presence of Zn–Cu alloys originated from industrial products. It was also revealed that Zn was enriched in the surface due to anthropogenic emission after urbanization on Majuro Atoll and fixed by carbonate and phosphate at the upper layer, which inhibits migration of Zn into the deeper layer and its release to the groundwater and costal water. Hence, the fixation of heavy metals at the surface prevents their exposure to aquatic organisms and residents via fresh groundwater in the island.

Influence of acidification on carbonate sediments in Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands was studied by chemical and mineralogical methods coupled with synchrotron-based X-ray ¯-CT. We found that the lowering of soil pH near the surface layer caused decrease of Mg concentration and increase of porosity of foraminifera (Calcarina spp.) due to the selective dissolution of magnesian calcite in Calcarina spp.test.

  New coral microatoll data allow presenting an updated late Holocene sea-level curve for the Gilbert Islands of Kiribati. Examination of build-up elevation and spatial distribution of microatolls, along with radiocarbon age data from coral samples, suggest an approximately 1 m sea-level high stand, possibly lasting from similar to 3500 to 1900 cal yr BP. Our sea-level curve, which is similar to the one reported from the Marshall Islands, is a baseline to reconstruct the evolution of reef flats and reef islands. In addition, it provides important contextual data to infer human settlement on islands in the west-central Pacific.

  南北貿易風帯には環礁が数多く分布する。サンゴ礁の上の未固結な砂礫が州島を形成する。低平な地形で、植生は限られる。特徴の少ない空間だが、そこに人間が住み着くことで方角が設定され、微妙な高低差が意識され、ナラティブが付与されてきた。人文主義地理学に準えれば、身体経験を通して構築・更新されてきた景観が環礁にもあったはずである。マラエと呼ばれる東ポリネシアの祭祀遺跡は興味深い研究対象の１つだろう。しかし、考古学は痕跡の物質性を記述できても、人間の具体的な経験まで踏み込むことは難しい。「景観」という概念は学際的視点を我々に求めてくる。本発表では、北部クック諸島トンガレヴァ環礁のマラエに民族考古学的にアプローチし、経験された景観として論じる。ソサエティ諸島などの事例と同様に、方形の区画、基壇／配石、そして立石を基本要素とするマラエである。幾何学的な建造物だが、前後左右に対称というわけではない。基壇や立石が区画の一方に偏ることで、外洋方向への指向性をもつ。区画が内と外を限り、居住址から距離的に隔てられてもいる。これらの不均質性が儀礼の場面で立場によって異なる仕方で経験され、そうした経験の束が社会的に共有されることで、マラエは景観として更新されていたと考えてみたい。経験の内容に迫れるのは、キリスト教伝来直前の18世紀中頃に1年近く滞在した米国商人ラモントの民族誌的記録が利用できるからである。

  リモート・オセアニアの環礁では、河川による堆積作用はもちろん、火山噴火による降灰が期待できないため、島民の生活面は過去から現在までほとんど変わらず、考古学にとっては層位発掘が難しいフィールドである。しかし、サトイモ科根茎類の天水田掘削にともなって周りに積上げられてきた廃土の下に、しばしば過去の地表面がパックされている。プカプカ環礁ではこれまでに、４つの天水田の廃土堤で 6 地点のトレンチ発掘を実施した。年代測定の信頼性を確保するために、採取した炭化材の樹種同定を行い、ヤシの実の内果皮など短命部位の炭化試料を選択 した。 AMS 年代測定の結果は、いずれの地点でも最下文化層で600cal.yr.BP 前後の較正年代を示すことが明らかとなった。プカプカ環礁初の考古学的発掘調査が慶應大の調査隊によって1985 年に行われ、 1988年刊行の英文概報で 2310 65yr.BP という 14C 年代が掲載された。当時は、ビショップ博物館の篠遠喜彦博士がポリネシアの移住史を「オーソドックス・シナリオ」として取り纏めていた時期である。西ポリネシアから東ポリネシアへの最初期の移住ルートはサモア・トンガからマルケサス諸島と考えられ、その時期は 17 00 1600 年前と見積られた。ただし、サモアやトンガの初期居住期が 2800 年前だから、両地域のあいだにある 1000 年余りのギャ
  ップが課題だった。プカプカはまさに東西ポリネシアの中間に位置する北部クック諸島の環礁であり、それゆえ 2300 年前に遡る初期居住の年代は、オーソドックス・シナリオの蓋然性を高める証拠として注目を集めてしまった。しかし、当時の年代測定はベーター線計測法によるもので、AMS 法に比べると精度が低い。また、測定試料ごとに異なる同位体分別効果（δ 13C 値）を加味した補正年代（コンベンショナル 年代）は得られていない。何よりも、測定試料の材が炭化物か海産貝類か不明である。現在の基準に照らすと、残念ながら信頼性の低い測定年代である。その後、東ポリネシアの移住史にかかわる14C 年代の信頼性が厳密に評価され、初期居住期はタヒチで 1000 年前、マルケサス、ハワイ、イースター島、ニュージーランドで 800年前と推定されている。天水田を取り囲む廃土堤下から得た 600cal.yr.BP 前後の較正年代を現在の通説に当てはめると、プカプカ環礁の初期居住は、タヒチやマルケサスなど火山起源の高い島々への移住が進んだ後ということになる。東西ポリネシアには、 1000 年前以降も往来があったと考える歴史言語学的研究がある。プカプカ環礁はその中継地として居住が始まった可能性がある。

  課題番号20121005：本計画研究では、サンゴ礁と人間の新たな共生・共存系のモデルを構築する。そのために、ジオ・アーケオロジー、動物考古学、形質人類学の手法によって環境利用史（漁労や農耕）を解明する。また、現在のサンゴ礁が直面する複合ストレスの規模や強度は、過去のものとは比較にならないほど大きいため、この状況への対応策の1つとして、グローバル化のなかで拡大し続ける社会的ネットワークの活用を考える。先史から現在まで連綿と続く「絡み合う人と自然の景観史」を描出し、生計資源・観光資源・ 文化資源としてのサンゴ礁の活用方法を諸学との協働によって探求する。
