  • The (im)possibility of interpreting traditional Japanese spatial forms within contemporary architectural practice

    This paper explores the indigenous characteristics of Japanese architectural space and how this distinctiveness, on a wider spatial scale, can be transferred and reinterpreted within contemporary Japanese architectural practice. One of the identified spatial elements utilised for research is shinden-zukuri, a type of annexe style, which can be viewed as a group of multiple buildings that can be recognised as a single building. In this paper, the researched element is extrapolated, transferred and interpreted within contemporary architectural practice. The examination of said identity, the open spatial form, confirms its widespread utilisation and deep-rooted nature in the mental landscape of the Japanese people. The findings indicate that contemporary Japanese architecture and architectural practice is beginning to reach a fork in the road: whether it can retain its observed spatial identity and resist, or assimilate the current trends suppressing the previously identified spatial values. The overall findings indicate that the condition of contemporary Japanese architecture oscillates between openness and closedness and will require attuning to the changing circumstances if the perceived spatial values are to endure.

  • The Potential of Small Wooden-Frame Building in Aging Japan

    Wooden-frame structures, with the capacity for continuous renewal, are key resources for urban regeneration and so comprise one of the most sustainable construction methods. This was true in the past for Japan, but following World War II, wooden-frame structures were demolished and replaced at a rapid pace. However, today, with Japan’s aging and dwindling population, the growing number of abandoned houses has become a socio-economic issue. In response to this crisis, local initiatives have been established to address this problem. Some novel design and management practices have arisen to restore the value of excess wooden-framed buildings. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the current design and renovation practices of vacant wooden-frame buildings in Japan, as well as to evaluate these practices in light of a sustainable future, by approaching this issue from the perspective of architects and designers and investigating their roles in these processes. The paper starts with the evolution of this building type from the past to the present. Data from in-depth interviews with specialists in wooden-frame construction as well as architects who are involved in the renovation of postwar timber dwellings are gathered and discussed. The emphasis here is on the expertise these specialists and architects have in successful cases of design and space management, as well as the incorporation of those buildings into the local community. Our case studies are located in different urban contexts; a regional city, a peripheral area of Tokyo, and central Tokyo. The findings highlight the crucial role of architects who mediate between benefits and drawbacks of current rehabilitation efforts, which are nevertheless still outnumbered by abandoned houses. Nonetheless, these experiences are crucial and valuable for the long-term viability of this building type in Japan.

    The focus is on a bottom-up approach to inherit the local cultural background. While the contemporary society is in a structural transition from flow to stock, the utilization of stock is still insufficient, and in particular, attempts to inherit architecture for the next generation are not well discussed in the historical and cultural context. This paper describes the design process of the addition and renovation of “Kankyutei” (original design: Tsutomu Ikuta).

    The focus is on a bottom-up process to create publicness based on individual actions. We have conducted a case study of citizens’ initiatives to privately build a pavilion in a city park. This paper describes the process in which citizens’ initiatives that began with a small number of individuals have spread widely, with the public involvement of the local government, and has taken root for the local residents over time. The interaction of private-ness and publicness is suggested to create a place for collective local activities.

  • Public-private interaction in low-rise, high-density Tokyo: a morphological and functional study of contemporary residential row-houses

    The focus of this paper is liveable, low-rise high-density urban morphologies of residential architecture and urban planning practices in Tokyo. Over the last several decades, historically established qualities in cities worldwide are increasingly sacrificed in favour of globalization–led ‘universal’ typologies. Tokyo is not an exception: it is gradually changing to a high-rise, high-density built city environment.
    From a morphological point of view, the paper demonstrates bioclimatic and cultural disadvantages of such developmental paradigm shift in Tokyo. Presented case studies elaborate upon the ways in which low-rise high-density environments and subsequent urban forms better facilitate human interaction and, consequently, can aid in reducing social isolation and contribute to mental well-being.
    Presented case studies, observed over the period of six years depict how residential environments created by row-houses can be seen as a collection of adjoining private spaces. The emphasis is on the interconnected set of phenomena: low-rise high-density morphologies, climate-responsive semi-exterior spaces, facilitating human and public-private interaction.
    The conducted morphological and functional analysis shows how design requirements of bioclimatic responsive semi-exterior space fully coincide with those of desirable public-private interface and human interaction. However, site-specific constraints critically affect spatial configurations of low-rise high-density developments in contemporary Tokyo, emphasizing the requirement for case-by-case attention in design and management of such places. Only design processes conscious of spatial management aware of the potential embedded in the design process can enhance socio-cultural interplay and bioclimatic performance.
