A New Type of Screening Necessity We Face with Online Surveys: Evaluating the Function of Instructed Response Items for Identifying Inattentive Respondents

More and more social surveys are conducted online now than ever. Therefore, we investigated a method, planting instructed response items (IRIs) in a survey, to eliminate inattentive respondents as a necessary screening. Two web surveys were conducted; there were four IRIs in study 1 (n=2,490) and three in study 2 (n=2,000). The objectives were twofold; finding an appropriate number of IRIs in a web survey and finding the differences between the two groups, the original and the screened data, categorized by IRIs. In study 1, of the respondents who passed the first three IRIs, 1,935 out of 2,490 were considered attentive; the rest (555) were eliminated from the data analysis based on the response tree analysis. The two groups were compared on the quality-of-life scale with 24 items, with all respondents and only the attentive. The difference in mean scores between the two groups was statistically significant. Still, the difference was minor because of the shared respondents, 1,935 respondents between the two groups. The item characteristic curves from the 2-parameter logistic model were compared between the attentive (n=1,935) and the inattentive (n=555) respondents. The differences were distinctively visible, and the decision to eliminate 555 respondents was supported. In study 2, the birthday was asked and used to calculate the age. Then, the calculated age was checked by comparing the provided age by the web survey company. The rates of correct responses increased monotonically with higher levels of attentiveness. We conclude that evidence indicates IRIs function well for detecting inattentive respondents. We also tentatively recommend that three IRIs in a survey work well to detect inattentive respondents. Finally, the treatment of the respondents with the gray-zone attentiveness was discussed.

集中治療室に入室している子どもの親を対象にした調査で得られた，最も不安に感じたことについての自由記述を，テキストマイニングによって分析した。その結果，最も頻出していたのは「手術後」で，次に「医師」，「手術」，「急変」であった。これらの語はクラスター分析で13カテゴリに分類された。こうしたカテゴリをもとに，親の不安について，「悪化予期」，「将来不安」，「医師説明」，「看護師所作」，「不明性」などの17のトピックを抽出した。トピックの出現頻度は，親が捉えた子どもの容態の深刻度や，入院の仕方の違いで異なっていた。

A Japanese Version of the Personal Relative Deprivation Scale (J-PRDS): Development and validation of the J-PRDS

This study developed and validated a 5-item Japanese translation of the Personal Relative Deprivation Scale (J-PRDS5), originally developed in English by Callan et al. Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 34, 1514–1529, (2008), Callan et al. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 101, 955–973, (2011) to measure feelings of resentment and dissatisfaction stemming from the belief that one has been deprived of a desired or deserved outcome as compared to others similar to them. Most studies on feelings of personal relative deprivation (PRD) have included Western participants and no such studies have been conducted in Japan. To bridge this gap, we conducted a factor analysis of the J-PRDS5’s items, which demonstrated a single-factor structure consistent with Western studies. Through validation of the scale for Japan, our version (J-PRDS5) exhibited high internal consistency. In contrast to feelings of PRD, subjective socioeconomic status (SSS) focuses on cognitive appraisals by comparing oneself to all people in the same society. Higher J-PRDS5 scores were significantly and negatively correlated with SSS, and lower J-PRDS5 scores and higher SSS scores were significantly correlated with higher self-esteem, general health, and subjective well-being (SWB). Based on a mediation analysis, we found that PRD mediated the relationship between SSS and self-esteem, general health, and SWB. Our study is the first to assess individuals’ feelings of PRD in Japan, and our findings suggest that reducing feelings of PRD may improve individuals’ health and happiness.

小児集中治療室入室児の両親の不安・抑うつ・ PTSD の実態と経時的変化

　小児集中治療室(PICU)に子どもが入室した両親に生じる心理的問題の状況を明らかにするために，不安，抑うつ，PTSDの既存尺度を用いた質問紙調査を行った。調査は，子どもが入室中と退室から3か月後の2時点で実施，日本国内12施設のPICUと6施設の小児が入室する成人ICUで，第1回目(入室中)の質問紙に237人，第2回目(退室後3ヶ月)の質問紙に142人の両親から回答を得た。その結果，子どもがPICUおよび成人ICUに入室した両親のうち，入室中の時点で25.4%～34.3%の両親に，退室後3か月の時点で11.6%～20.4%の両親に，不安，抑うつ，PTSDが生じており，子どもがPICUに入室した両親は，子どもが成人ICUに入室した両親よりも心理的問題が生じる度合が高かった。本邦においても，欧米の先行研究結果と同様に，PICU入室児の両親に心理的問題が生じており，今後，その影響因子の検討が必要である。また，入室中の不安，抑うつ，PTSD得点がカットオフ値以上であった両親の方が，カットオフ値未満の両親よりも，退室後3か月の同尺度得点がカットオフ値以上であるリスクが高い一方で，退室後3か月に不安，抑うつ，PTSD得点がカットオフ値以上の両親には，入室中の同尺度得点がカットオフ値未満であった両親が17.9%～50.0%含まれていたことから，入室中の時点で，一見問題がなさそうに見える両親であっても，退室後に心理的問題が生じる可能性が示唆された。

Comparison among methods for improving response quality of surveys

Certain participants are insincere when responding to questionnaires. Two current approaches for detecting unmotivated or dishonest respondents, the instructional manipulation check (IMC), and the seriousness check, were examined. We also attempted to improve the quality of survey responses by asking respondents to take an oath that they would be serious before they started answering the questionnaire (TO). The respondents in two Web surveys were randomly assigned to one of four versions of the questionnaire. The main results indicated that (a) response quality tended to improve when respondents who did not follow instructions were excluded from the sample; and (b) respondents that who took an oath to answer seriously chose fewer “don’t know” options, straight line responses, and midpoint responses than the control group, suggesting that respondents behaved consistently with their initial commitment. The results indicate that although IMC is superior for improving data quality, techniques for deterring less serious responses including TO were desirable in that they did not reduce the sample size.

Leiter & Maslach(2005)によって開発された「仕事とうまくつき合うための6つの戦略」を用いて、在宅ケアサービス従事者のバーンアウトへの介入を試みた。研究協力者は一般用マスラックバーンアウト測定尺度と仕事との関係テストに、介入の前後で回答した。介入前の回答結果は、報酬や公平性が最大の問題であることを示していたが、協力者は職場のリーダーシップの問題に取り組むための実践プランを作成した。2ヶ月後に、彼のバーンアウトレベルは明らかに低下した。また、裁量権だけでなく、他の領域の業務上の問題も軽減した。

Response biases such as midpoint responses denigrate the validity of research conclusions. In this article, the authors’ experimental studies on midpoint responses are introduced. For example, these studies have suggested that respondents with low motivation tend to choose the middle category. This could partially explain why fewer people in Japan have reported being happy. Another study by the authors demonstrated that over responding increases middle category responses in a phenomenon that is seemingly similar to habituation. In addition, the availability of response time and eye tracking data among others are discussed. With the growth of web surveys, it has become easy to experimentally investigate survey response behaviors. Therefore, collaborations between experimental psychologists and survey researchers would be helpful to improve the quality of surveys.

Responding to Many Items in a Questionnaire Increases Middle Category Response

多くの項目が設けられた調査票に回答することで、回答にどのような変化が生じるのかを検討した。まず研究1で、ランダムな設問順を含む異なる複数の回答フォームを設けて検討したところ、項目の内容や配置の仕方にかかわらず、尺度の後半で中間選択が増加した。研究2では、心理尺度の項目を半数ずつ、見かけ上2つに分割した場合に、中間選択数に変化が見られるかどうかを検討した。結果は尺度を分割することで、後半に配置された項目での中間回答数は一時的に低下するか、増加傾向が抑えられた。しかしその効果は非常に小さいか、あってもすぐに消失し、その後中間選択数が増加していった。

How does response bias emerge in lengthy sequential preference judgments?

Internet surveys are currently used in many academic and marketing research ﬁelds. However, the results for these surveys occasionally show traces of response bias. In our study, we analyzed how response bias appears in lengthy
preference judgments. 1042 respondents participated in lengthy sequential preference judgments. Three stimuli series were used: scene pictures, Attneave nonsense shapes, and point-symmetric ﬁgures. One hundred stimuli were selected for each series and individually displayed on a computer screen, with presentation order randomized for each respondent. Respondents were then asked to rate their degree of preference for each stimulus. Mean preference scores increased over the ﬁrst 10–20 trials, then, gradually decreased from the middle to the last trial. Furthermore, participants tended to produce the maximum and minimum score during early trials. These results demonstrated that response bias can be a function of presentation order.

Respondents with low motivation tend to choose middle category: Survey questions on happiness in Japan

Some studies have shown low proportions of Japanese people rating their lives as happy. However, most surveys in Japan revealed that response distributions for subjective well-being items indicated excessive blips in middle categories. In this study, participants responded to four items that were designed to detect careless or unmotivated respondents; these items instructed respondents to choose a certain response category. Of the study’s respondents, about 40% failed to follow instructions for at least one of the four items. Besides, they often chose middle categories for well-being items. When those who did not follow instructions were excluded from the complete sample, middle categories showed low or no blips, and the proportion of respondents with high rating scores increased. Thus, this study suggested that one reason for reportedly low proportions of happy people in Japan was respondents who were not diligent in reading items.

Ignoring instructions and response bias when completing questionnaires

Certain participants are insincere, or careless when they respond to questionnaires. To identify such participants, we included three items in a questionnaire that instructed participants to choose a particular response category. Nurses (N=1000) responded to this questionnaire in a Web survey. Of these, 120 participants failed to follow the instructions for at least one item (non-followers). Analyzing their responses indicated the following: (a) non-followers were more likely to give identical, or midpoint responses; (b) the correlations between their responses to regular and reversed items were low or positive, and their responses to scales containing reversed items tended to show lower internal consistency; finally (c) the mean scores of non-followers were closer to the midpoint of the scale, regardless of whether the scale included reversed items. One reason that including reversed items lead to lower internal consistency could be because participants occasionally missed responding to these items. However, the results suggested that non-followers were not diligent in responding to even regular items, and merely deleting reversed items from scales was insufficient to assure accurate results.

Classification of burnout according to the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey: Fie classifications according to the exhaustion+1 criterion

The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the golden standard for the assessment of burnout. But,the MBI comprises three subscales(exhaustion,cynicism,professional efficacy), so interpretation can be difficult. There is no generally accepted classification of burnout. We aimed at classifying scores on the MBI-General Survey according to the exhaustion+1 criterion and applying neural test theory to the classification of results. We obtained data from a mental health examination we had performed in 2008 targeting on 1553 employees of a computer industry firm. The valid data for 1042 employees (669 men,373women) were used in the present analysis. The results suggested five classifications. Those meeting the exhaustion+1 criterion (a high score for exhaustion and a high score for cynicism, or a low score for professional efficacy) were judged as experiencing burnout, and those who additionally have both a high score for cynicism and a low score for professional efficacy were considered as experiencing severe burnout. Those with only a high exhaustion score were simply classified as being very exhausted. We also suggested increased attention those without exhaustion but with high cynicism scores as they were at risk of depression. Those falling under none of the above were considered healthy.

本研究は、卒後の新人研修において実施されたアサーション・トレーニングが新人看護師のアサーティブな態度やスキルすなわちアサーションの向上と、自尊感情に及ぼす効果を検証するとともに、アサーティブな態度やアサーションスキルが入職して早期に見られるバーンアウトや抑うつ、離職意図の軽減に及ぼす効果などを3つの研究によって明らかにした。
その結果、本研究で実施したアサーション・トレーニングのプログラムは、新人看護師のアサーション・マインドすなわちアサーティブな態度・信念とアサーティブな行動・技能すなわちアサーションスキルの両方を向上させうることが示された。また、アサーション・トレーニングはアサーションの向上とともに、自尊感情も高める効果を有していた。さらに、アサーティブな態度・信念は入職早期の個人的達成感の向上や抑うつの軽減に寄与していた。
これらの結果について考察を加えるとともに、新人看護師など対人援助職の卒後教育と新人研修のプログラムや心理教育のあり方について提案を行った。

「日本版Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS)-2011年版：個人と職場環境6つのミスマッチ診断」の妥当性について

日本版AWS-2011年版：個人と職場環境6つのミスマッチ診断を作成し、信頼性と妥当性について検討した。調査対象者は看護師878名。日本版AWS-2000年版に引き続き、原版と同じ6因子構造を認めることができたが、各因子に属する28項目のうち、1項目については日本版においては必ずしも用いる必要のない項目であることが示唆された。また、逆転項目については検討すべき課題が残った。下位尺度の内的整合性はすべて.75以上で確保されていた。さらに、基準関連妥当性も認められたことから、AWS-2011年版も実用性があると考えられた。

仕事における6つのミスマッチ領域を測定するAreas of Worklife Survey (AWS)の翻訳版を作成し，信頼性と妥当性を検討した。確認的因子分析では6因子モデルが支持されたが，適合度は十分とは言い切れず，今後検討を重ねていく課題が2つ認められた。AWS日本語翻訳版の6つの下位尺度のCronbachのα係数は0.66－0.88であった。AWS日本語翻訳版はMBI-GS日本版の3つの下位尺度と仕事の負担－職務効力感の間を除いて，全て有意な相関が認められ，基準関連妥当性が確認できた。以上のことから，AWSの日本語翻訳版は使用に耐えうると考えられた。

It is widely known that people often choose the response option in the middle, when responding to survey questions about their attitudes and opinions. Such midpoint responses have been recognized as one of the common response biases. A review of previous literature suggest that midpoint responses could occur for two reasons: (1) a truly neutral response; or (2) through ‘ignorance,’ ‘being undecided,’ or ‘having no opinion,’ among others. If respondents choose the middle category for the latter reasons, the validity of research conclusions would become questionable. We examined the conditions that increase or reduce midpoint responses, especially in terms of difficulties and ambiguities in question items. We have discussed whether the middle category should be offered as a response category, or not. We have also discussed to improve the explicitness of item characteristics and response forms to suppress midpoint responses.

MBIはバーンアウト測定において最も用いられているが、研究者間でコンセンサスが得られたバーンアウトの判定基準はない。我々はこれまでに提唱されている判定基準を踏まえた上で，臨床的にも理論的にも妥当と考えられるバーンアウトの判定基準の作成を行った。ニューラルテスト理論（NTT）を用いて検討したところ、3つの下位尺度の得点の組み合わせで5つのグループに分類することが妥当と思われた。この基準を用いて、バーンアウトが身体健康におよぼす影響について調べたところ、‘重度バーンアウト’群に属していた社員は，5年後の身体健康指標が最も悪かった。

Academic report on burnout among Japanese nurses

AIM:
Japanese nurses have increasingly experienced "burnout" in the past several years. Studies on Japanese nurses are required in order to explore how to prevent nursing burnout. The objectives of this report were to: (i) introduce the concept, definition, and measurement of burnout; (ii) look at an overview of the prevalence, possible causes, and consequences of burnout among Japanese nurses; and (iii) explore how to prevent burnout among nurses.
METHODS:
The authors and co-researchers have been studying burnout among Japanese workers for more than 15 years. Therefore, previously performed studies were reviewed and summarized.
RESULTS:
In Japan, approximately 36% of human services professionals, such as nurses, were burned out compared to 18% of civil servants, and 12% of company employees. It was quite obvious that nurses are prone to burnout. The possible causes and consequences of burnout among Japanese nurses were reviewed. Excessive workloads and interpersonal conflict in the workplace were possible causes of burnout among Japanese nurses. The consequences of nurse burnout are potentially very serious, including medical accidents/errors. Issues to prevent nursing burnout were then reviewed. Enhancement of cognitive coping skills for female nurses and problem-solving skills for male nurses could contribute to prevention of burnout in nurses.
CONCLUSION:
The authors' previous study revealed that the new model of the organizational context of burnout developed by Leiter and Maslach could be applied to Japanese. Further examination is needed. This report supports the call to scale up burnout prevention strategy for Japanese nurses.

The effect of item wording direction and grouping on psychological measures

This article addressed the problems researchers are likely to encounter when employing mixed-worded scales (i.e., scales that contain both positively and negatively worded items). In study 1, two forms of self-esteem scale were developed. For the first form, the order of 10 items remained identical to that of the published instrument (normal items). The alternative form was arranged so that positively worded items appeared earlier and negatively worded items later in the measure (grouped items). The scores of grouped positively worded items appeared higher than normal items. In study 2, although professional efficacy is measured by positively worded items in common Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey(MBI-GS), this study included negatively worded items. 478 employee participants responded to 1 of 3 forms (normal items, grouped items, negatively worded items) of MBI-GS. Compared with normal efficacy items, negatively worded items and grouped items (1) relate more strongly to the other two burnout components; (2) indicate higher total score; (3) show that an intermediate category were less chosen.

確率が明確ではないような曖昧状況は、推測の自信を低下させることから避けられるとされる。しかしながら、確率が非常に低いような状況ではむしろ好まれることも知られている。本研究では、参加者が複数事象の生起の有無を実際に体験した上で、ある事象が生起した割合の推定を求める2種類の実験を行った。このとき、制御幻想を導くとされる手続きへの関与が可能であると、そうした手続きが無く、自動的に表示させたときよりも推定の自信が増大した。しかしながら、こうした操作は推測値の高低には影響しなかった。この結果は、従来一括りにされてきた制御幻想という現象が、少なくとも２つの異なる現象からなることを示している。

曖昧性忌避をはじめとする、曖昧性下での判断や意思決定に関する研究と、ギャンブル行動などで見られる制御幻想は、これまでまったく異なる研究領域とされてきた。本論文ではまず、それぞれの研究領域で取り上げられてきた要因や実験方法を整理した。そして、曖昧性と制御幻想が、選好において反対方向の影響を及ぼすものの、判断や意思決定の同じ側面から捉えることができることを、9つの実験を通じて明らかにした。

Langerが提唱した制御幻想については、過去に多くの研究がなされてきたが、ICが一体何であるかについては明確ではない。我々は制御幻想を扱った実験を検討し、ほとんどの研究が制御幻想の仮説を支持する結果を得たことを見いだした。しかし何を独立変数とし、何を従属変数とするかが研究ごとに異なっているため、先行研究の結果について再検討する必要がある。我々はICを引き起こす要因を新しい観点から分類し直すことを提案した。これに加えて、制御幻想の2つの典型的な測定指標が2次確率分布の観点から区別できる可能性があることを示唆した。

曖昧性忌避を引き起こしたり，消滅させたりする条件について検討するために、明確な賭けと曖昧な賭けの間での選択を求める一連の実験を行った。結果は明確な賭けが常に好まれるわけでなく、曖昧性忌避を示す被験者の割合は曖昧性のタイプによって異なることが示された。さらに、曖昧性忌避は被験者が課題を選択することが可能なときには一貫して減少した。こうした結果は、2次確率分布の形態と制御幻想の観点から解釈された。（共同研究につき、本人担当部分抽出不可能)

教師のストレスの原因となる保護者要因を明確にするために、養護学校小学校教師計175名に質問紙調査を行った。結果は、子どもの教育の役割について、ほとんどの項目で教師と保護者との考え方にズレがあることが示されると同時に、このズレが大きいほど、教師は役割葛藤を感じるという傾向がみられた。また、保護者の自己中心的・家族エゴ的な行動・態度をよく経験している教師は、自分の役割を越えると考えられる期待を感じており、情緒的消耗感の経験が高かった。（共同研究につき、本人担当部分抽出不可能)

多くの研究で、刺激の曖昧さがストレスを引き起こすことが示されている。本研究では、曖昧さ対する耐性の個人差が心理的ストレスの評価プロセスにどのように影響を及ぼすのかを調べた。その結果、曖昧さ耐性は刺激が脅威かどうかについての一次的評価と関連し、その事件に対処できるかどうかについての二次的評価とは無関係であることが示された。

一般に高齢者は、若齢者と比べて保守的で用心深いといわれる。しかしながらこうした結論を下した先行研究は、方法が不備であったり、異なる２つの行動傾向を混同していた。本研究では、高齢者の用心深さが、選択肢についての選択ではなく、むしろ選択場面に対する態度と関係することを論じ、高齢者の特徴は不確実な選択場面自体に対する回避傾向であることを明らかにした。またこうした議論から、メタ選択という概念を意思決定研究に取り入れることの有用性について提案した。(共同研究につき、本人担当部分抽出不可能)

ホームヘルパーのサービス行動の低下の原因の一つは、バーンアウト(燃えつき)現象にある。本研究では燃えつきの原因となるストレス要因を４種類同定し、それぞれについて有効な緩和要因を明らかにした。例えば、業務遂行能力に自信をもっているヘルパーには、コーディネーターや主任が業務について十分理解していないことによって生じるストレスに対して、業務の自律性を高くすることがバーンアウトに有効であることが示された。

抑うつの発生メカニズムに関する学習性無力感の改訂モデルに関する内外の100以上の文献をレビューし、問題点を検証するための、調査研究を行った。その結果、ストレッサーとしては、①課題達成に関する出来事よりも、対人関係に関する事件の方が、抑うつを引き起こしやすいこと、②原因帰属のスタイルが抑うつの原因となりうること、しかしながら、③事件とスタイルの交互作用の影響は見られないこと、が明らかにされた。 [学位（修士）論文]
