    Hosting behaviours and experiences have gradually been acknowledged as influential factors in visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travel. However, the challenges facing VFR hosts while hosting VFR travellers have not been well researched, especially for VFR hosts who are migrants from different cultural and language backgrounds. This study aims to explore the challenges of hosting friends and relatives who have different cultural and language backgrounds to the destination country using the case of Japanese migrant VFR hosts in Australia. Qualitative analysis revealed 12 challenges, which were grouped into three areas, leading to some hosts being reluctant and inactive in receiving VFR travellers. These challenges were rooted in communication difficulties, including the language barriers of their VFR travellers and the social obligations of VFR hosts. This study also suggests socio-cultural differences and living environments between VFR hosts living in the migration destination and VFR travellers living in the home country, making these challenges even greater despite sharing cultural backgrounds. Further research is required to uncover the patterns and impacts of each challenge based on the host and traveller types and to support the design of measures to develop the VFR market.

    <p>The authors define a "drone society" as a society in which problems are discovered and solved using drones and related digital technologies, and discuss the utilization of drones for realizing such a "drone society." First, examples of UAV/UAS usages in various industries are presented as well as robots and self-driving cars. Second, the authors discuss social acceptance, safe operation management, human resources development, and impacts on cities. These issues should be discussed in greater depth with citizens. Finally, necessary deregulation and feasibility studies are also pointed out. It seems desirable to conduct rule-making and social experiments by considering not only small UAV or UAS but also auto-pilot maritime drones, robotics and self-driving cars.</p>

    戦前研究ユニットでは、レヴァイアサン・データバンクに所収されている「衆議院総選挙候補者選挙区統計(1890～1990)」を補正して作成した1889年～1924年の選挙区編成に関する定量的データを基盤に定性的データの収集を重ね、この大選挙区制への移行がもたらした影響の検討を進めた。特にArcGISを用いた地図データの作成を重点的に進め、1900年の大選挙区制、1919年の小選挙区制、1925年の中選挙区制についてデータを整備することができた。
    戦後研究ユニットでは、戦前研究ユニットと同様に地図データの作成を重点的に進め、1945年の大選挙区制、（1947年の中選挙区制）、1994年の小選挙区制についてデータを整備することができた。上記２ユニットは基本的なデータの作成に重点を置いたが、そのなかでも2年目以降の研究に示唆を与える地理的差分と仮説を多く得ることができたのは収穫であった。
    理論研究ユニットでは、選挙区制度構築のプロセスとその区割りの実態を理論的に論じていく準備として、各国との比較を進めた。
    研究会も3回開催することができた。とりわけ、ハーバード大学で政治地理学を研究するダニエル・コス氏を2回にわたって招き、情報交換をできていること、第3回研究会に若手軽量政治学者2名をオブザーバーとして迎えられたことは、今後の展開について大きく期待できる要素となった。また、選挙区割り改定をめぐる議論が盛んになるなか、研究代表者が『日本経済新聞』『公研』で発信することで、社会貢献も進めることができている。
    以上のとおり、初年度はデータ整備を軸に、研究プロジェクトの順調なキックオフを行うことができた。
    研究実績の概要に示したとおり、おおむね順調に進んでいる。
    研究を進めていくなかで、制度変化の際の質的な情報がまだ不足していることが明確になってきた。このため、第2年度は、予定していた研究を進めるほか、関係者へのインタビューを行っていく必要がある。
