Ten participants were assessed while walking in water and on land with wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) attached to the right thigh. Longitudinal acceleration, anterior-posterior acceleration, and frontal axis angular velocity were measured at 100 Hz, matched with video analysis sampled at 25 Hz during the walking trials. The longitudinal acceleration showed almost 1 g from initial heel contact to 70% of one cycle, and the anterior-posterior acceleration showed a sinusoidal pattern, synchronizing the approximate posture of the thigh in water. The frontal axis angular velocity fluctuated less while walking in water compared with on land, because thigh motion speed was slower in water than on land. The acceleration and angular velocity in water were stable and did not fluctuate. Walking exercises in water may be effective in individuals with knee- or thigh-related medical issues.

Background: An algorithm for the classification of ambulatory and non-ambulatory activities using the ratio of unfiltered to filtered synthetic acceleration measured with a triaxial accelerometer and predictive models for physical activity intensity (METs) in adults and in elementary school children has been developed. The purpose of the present study was to derive predictive equations for METs with a similar algorithm in young children. Methods: Thirty-seven healthy Japanese children (four-to six-years old) participated in this study. The five non-ambulatory activities including low-intensity activities, and five ambulatory activities were selected. The raw accelerations using a triaxial accelerometer and energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry using the Douglas bag method during each activity were collected. Results: For non-ambulatory activities, especially light-intensity non-ambulatory activities, linear regression equations with a predetermined intercept (0.9) or quadratic equations were a better fit than the linear regression. The equations were different from those for adults and elementary school children. On the other hand, the ratios of unfiltered to filtered synthetic acceleration in non-ambulatory activities were different from those in ambulatory activities, as in adults and elementary school children. Conclusions: Our calibration model for young children could accurately predict intensity of physical activity including low-intensity non-ambulatory activities.

Advanced machine learning technologies are seldom applied to wearable motion sensor data obtained from sport movements. In this work, we therefore investigated neural networks for motion performance evaluation utilizing a set of inertial sensor-based ski jump measurements. A multidimensional convolutional network model that related the motion data under aspects of time, placement and sensor type was implemented. Additionally, its applicability as a measure for automatic motion style judging was evaluated. Results indicate that one multi-dimensional convolutional layer is sufficient to recognize relevant performance error representations. Furthermore, comparisons against a Support Vector Machine and a Hidden Markov Model show that the new model outperforms feature-based methods under noisy and biased data environments. Architectures such as the proposed evaluation system can hence become essential for automatic performance analysis and style judging systems in future.

An intelligent system for motor style assessment and training from inertial sensor data in intermediate level Ski jumping

In this research we developed a wearable, augmented motion feedback system for ubiquitous training and motion assessment in mid-level ski jumping. Ski jump motion data captured with a set of inertial sensors were first transformed into meaningful kinematic motion information using an extensive processing system. Next, derived segment orientations, joint positions and joint angles were used to build and train motion knowledge on the base of the sport's common style and judging criteria. This intelligent machine knowledge was then applied to identify specific style information within incoming motion data that could be provided to the athlete as augmented motion feedback via a mobile training application. System validations on a set of test jumping data showed that style errors could be recognized and displayed well by the implemented system. We therefore believe the system to be suitable for the provision of kinematic motion feedback that could not be obtained without an extensive training support environment otherwise. Adding a real-time environment for athletesystem communication, this could lead to the creation of an ubiquitous training support application in future.

Development of an automated motion evaluation system from wearable sensor devices for ski jumping

We developed a system for the automatic evaluation of ski jumps on the base of machine learning algorithms. In several capture sessions during summer jump season, motions of four junior ski jumpers were captured by inertial sensors over the complete jump, from the start of the in-run to the end of the outrun phase. Additionally, style points were collected from an experienced judge to serve as ground truth and control data for the machine learning algorithms. All jumps were randomly separated into a training and a test database. Next, we determined kinematic factors such as body segment orientation and body joint position and segmented every jump into its main motion phases on the base of the raw sensor data. Specific motion characteristics that influence the performance and length of a jump were then used to create machine style knowledge from the training database in compliance to the official scoring guidelines. In a last step, we computed the similarity of every jump within the test database to the trained knowledge on a ski jump's style parameters and evaluated the presence or absence of jump errors. Results showed that the computed error annotations conform largely to the human-based judging scores. Adding automatic score measures to the algorithm in future, this method might be an important step towards better measurability and objectivity of performance-oriented sports in form of a mobile competition evaluation system. This paper describes a procedure for optimizing the design of the landing slope of the Zao jumping hill. The concept behind the design of the landing slope is that the landing slope should enable the spectators to witness an exciting spectacle, that the jumpers can land safely, and that it can be constructed with minimum cost. We regard these features as objective functions. The findings can be summarized as follows: it is possible to control the objective functions by changing the profile of the landing slope; there is not a unique optimal design solution, but the Pareto optimal solutions; a landing slope that gives safety on landing is almost equivalent to a landing slope that produces differences in the flight distance due to differences the jumpers' skill levels; there is a trade-off between the length of the flight distance and safety on landing; the construction cost is influenced by the horizontal distance between the edge of the take-off table and the K-point. The developed procedure would be applicable not only to Zao in Yamagata city, but also to all ski jumping hills in the world.

The aim of this study is to clarify the effect of e-health community health promotion program, which consists of both online diet record system and off-line health activities. 49 participants are surveyed concerning self-rated sense of understanding and sense of control about calorie intake, nutrition balance, and physical activity along with basic information, internet usage and lifestyle habit are surveyed during 2009-2001. Self-rated sense of achievement regarding dietary understanding and dietary sense of control significantly increased in a group that utilized the online diet record system. Further analysis shows that the usage of the diet record system affects the self-rated sense of achievement while neither age, sex, answers of the preliminary questionnaire nor session participation had any effect.

A study was undertaken to investigate the influence of shaft stiffness on the deflection and the positioning of the club face during a golf swing. To accomplish this task, a theoretical model was developed that calculated deflections of golf shafts during the swing. Applying moment-curvature in relation to a shaft that had the bending stiffness, a differential equation and the boundary conditions that characterized its behaviour over the duration of the swing were generated. Incorporated into the bending moment-distribution are forces and torques acting at each end of the shaft. These loads were calculated using an inverse dynamics problem of the golf club during the swing. A motion capture system was utilized to collect the necessary data. Solutions to the equations of motion for the shaft were calculated numerically. The results have been presented as deflections along the shaft as functions of time. Bending deflections were determined in the plane of the club face and normal to this plane were calculated. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Sensor Data Mining on the Kinematical Characteristics of the Competitive Swimming

The purpose of this study was to propose a new methodology for the automatic identification and the classification of the swimmers kinematical information during interval training of competitive swimming. Forty-five college swimmers attached the newly developed chest band sensor unit, which has a triple-axes accelerometer inside, and then performed a controlled interval training set with four stroke styles. The authors identified swimmer's states, such as the swimming/rest phases and the start, turn and goal touch events by using the trunk longitudinal acceleration (Ay). With the inductive inference based on the experimental results and the deductive inference based on the empirical rule on the interval training brought the estimation of the swimming time. For the classification of the swimming strokes, using the extracted swimming phase acceleration, the mean, variance and skewness of each bout were calculated. The authors compared different data mining algorithms for the stroke style classification with these descriptive statistics, such as mean, variance, skewness on the each axial acceleration as the independent variables and stroke styles as the depending variable. The accuracy of the stroke style classification by both the multi-layered neural network (NN) and the C4.5 decision tree were 91.1%. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

This paper describes optimization of the size and launch conditions of a discus. The objective function for optimization is the flight distance. Longer flight distance is better. Fourteen design variables are considered. Eight of the fourteen are concerned with the skill of the thrower. They determine the launch conditions, which are controlled by the thrower when he or she throws. The other six variables are concerned with the design of the equipment. These are the dimensions of the discus (width, thickness, radius of the metal rim and diameter of the flat center area on each side), the moment of inertia on the axis of symmetry and finally the mass of the discus. The dependences of size and the angle of attack on the aerodynamic data are estimated by using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) technique. Typical CFD results, including the effect of stalling, were confirmed by comparing the results with experimental data. As a result, the longest flight distance that could be achieved was 79 meters. In order to do this, the initial yaw rate on the axis of symmetry should be maximized. The mass should be the smallest. The moment of inertia on the axis of symmetry, the diameter of the flat center area and the width should be designed to be large. The air inflow to the discus should arrive from the upper side at the very beginning of the flight. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

High-speed video image analysis of ski jumping flight posture

Ski jumping flight posture was analyzed for achieving large flight distance on the basis of high-speed video images of the initial 40 m part of 120-m ski jumping flight. The time variations of the forward leaning angle and the ski angle of attack were measured from the video images, and the aerodynamic forces were calculated from the kinematic data derived from the images. Some correlations were investigated between the initial-speed corrected flight distance and such parameters as the angles of jumper, the initial transition time and the aerodynamic force coefficients. The result indicated that small body angle of attack was a key for large flight distance in the initial phase of flight because of small drag force, and that the most distinctive fault of beginners was too large body angle of attack and ski angle of attack leading to aerodynamic stall. Too small drag force does not give an optimal condition for large flight distance because the lift force is also too small. The ratio of the lift to the drag was larger than 0.95 for advanced jumpers.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop an estimation equation for energy expenditure during water walking based on the acceleration and walking speed.
Design: Cross-validation study.
Methods: Fifty participants, males (n = 29, age: 27-73) and females (n = 21, age: 33-70) volunteered for this study. Based on their physical condition water walking was conducted at three self-selected walking speeds from a range of: 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 m/min. Energy expenditure during each trial was calculated. During water walking, an accelerometer was attached to the occipital region and recorded three-dimensional accelerations at 100 Hz. A stopwatch was used for timing the participant's walking speed. The estimation model for energy expenditure included three components; (i) resting metabolic rate, (ii) internal energy expenditure for moving participants' body, and (iii) external energy expenditure due to water drag force.
Results: When comparing the measured and estimated energy expenditure with the acceleration data being the third component of the estimation model, high correlation coefficients were found in both male (r = 0.73) and female (r = 0.77) groups. When walking speeds were applied to the third component of the model, higher correlation coefficients were found (r = 0.82 in male and r = 0.88 in female). Good agreements of the developed estimation model were found in both methods, regardless of gender.
Conclusions: This study developed a valid estimation model for energy expenditure during water walking by using head acceleration and walking speed. (C) 2013 Sports Medicine Australia. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the hysteresis in the aerodynamic properties of a discus near to its stalling angle. Wind tunnel tests were carried out with a full-size woman's discus. The experimental aerodynamic data D, L and M were obtained from wind tunnel tests as functions of the angle of attack and the spin rate. It was found that the drag, lift and pitching moment coefficients, C-D C-L and C-M, increase with increasing the angle of attack up to a stalling angle of 28-30 degrees. Beyond the stalling angle, C-L and C-M decrease suddenly and abruptly with increasing angle of attack. On the other hand, recovery from the stall does not occur at the same stalling angle of 28-30 degrees when the angle of attack decreases from the stall state; recovery actually occurs at 25 degrees. The C-L-alpha (angle of attack) curve is almost the same when the angle of attack is less than 24 degrees. Therefore, hysteresis occurs near the stalling angle. (C) 2013 The Authors. Typical in-filed technology used for human movement assessment is a single tool such as a video camera. However, there are drawbacks with this system. Understanding various human actions e. g. swimming kinematics, or the legality of a bowling action in cricket, is important for performance analysis. Inertial sensors can biomechanically capture temporal kinematics. Measuring the kinematics of human movement, allows performance analysers to monitor progression of an athlete's development. Fusing video and inertial sensor technology supplies visual feedback in conjunction with technical information. The video-sensor fusion presented here provides assessment for athletes where gross visual measures combined with fine movement monitoring possible. Therefore, a novel system can be offered which can assist athlete performance development. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

A computer simulation of the flying disc based on the wind tunnel test data

The purpose of this study was validation of a computer simulation on the flight of the flying disc. The flying disc, widely known as the Frisbee (TM), is thrown with rotation for its stable flight. The flight characteristics of the flying disc were identical in comparison with other flying sports materials. The flying disc can keep its lift and glide in the air by the wing effect. However, the traveling direction of the disc was steeply changed in particular conditions. In order to explain this phenomenon, the precise simulation of the disc movement is necessary. In this study, a computer simulation of the flying disc was accomplished. In advance of the simulation, both the three-axial forces and moments acting on the disc were measured in a wind tunnel test for the simulation. For the validation of the simulation results, the authors conducted an experiment using a motion capture system to obtain real flying disc kinematical parameters. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Elite running typically requires performance analysis. This equally applies to able-body and amputee athletes who use prosthetic limbs. Amputee runners with artificial limbs deal with unique situations such as balance and control of the prosthetic. A new lower limb has been developed and performance requires ongoing monitoring. Inertial sensor technology, accelerometers and gyroscopes, were used to measure the limb's development, in particular stride, step, and stance duration. While research has been reported on these variables for able-body athletes, no research has investigated these kinematics from Paralympic athletes using inertial technology. The participant's existing and new prosthetic performance were compared. Performance monitoring of the limb during athlete use is required in order objectively assess the new limb's capabilities. To determine the flight path of a discus when it is thrown, it is essential to know what aerodynamic forces are acting on it. However, little data on this is available. Employing a full-size model in a wind tunnel, we have measured the aerodynamic forces acting on a discus spinning on its transverse axis, as well as on a 'non-spinning' discus. The aerodynamic force data (drag, lift and pitching moment) were obtained to create an 'aerodynamic database'. These forces are given as functions over practical ranges of the angle of attack, the spin rate and the wind speed. It was found that the stalling angle was about 30 degrees, and that the lift coefficient increased linearly with increasing angle of attack up to the stalling angle. The estimated lift coefficient obtained by the vortex lattice method agrees with the experimental data within a standard deviation of 0.08. It was observed by oil flow and smoke observation methods that a pair of longitudinal vortexes occur from the 'pressure side' to the 'suction side', similar to wing-tip vortices. These longitudinal vortexes prevent flow-separation up to a high angle of attack, around 30 degrees. The drag coefficient increases with increasing angle of attack up to the stalling angle, and it decreases slightly around the stalling angle, corresponding to a significant and abrupt decrease in lift at the same angle. The coefficient of the pitching moment is almost positive, which is the case with 'nose-up' rotation. There is little difference between the aerodynamic coefficients whether the discus is spinning or not. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Mechanical energy transfer by internal force during the swing phase of running

Running is a cyclic motion in which each leg has two phases, stance and swing. The energy generated by the muscular forces are dominant in the phase between initial contact and mid-stance. However, during the swing phase, other internal forces act to transfer the mechanical energy between segments. In this research, we focused on the energy transfer mechanism during the swing phase and investigated how non-muscular (e. g. centrifugal and gravity) forces of each link generate, absorb, and transfer the mechanical energy. A mathematical analysis of the lower limb's movement in the swing phase of running at different speeds was carried out. A multi-body power analysis was performed using dynamical equations of a three-dimensional double pendulum to find the mechanism to increase the speed of the leg swing efficiently. Results show that the internal force at the knee joint work throughout the swing phase to generate centrifugal force in the shank and that the knee joint moment is very small in comparison to the internal force. Understanding the transfer mechanism using the internal forces could lead to economical running forms that prevent injuries and enhance the performance of the runners. This paper describes the concurrent optimization of the design of a discus and the skill with which it is thrown. The objective function for optimization is the flight distance, where longer is better. Thirteen control variables are considered, twelve of which are concerned with the skill of the thrower. These determine the launch conditions, which are controlled by the thrower when he or she throws the discus. The final variable is concerned with the discus itself. This is the moment of inertia on its transverse axis. The optimization was carried out with the aid of a genetic algorithm, and the entire trend for each generation between the objective function and the control variables could be visualized with the aid of self organizing maps. It was found that the flight distance achieved with concurrent optimization was longer than that optimized for skill alone. In the case of the optimal flight, the angle of attack should always be less than the stalling angle. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The swim turn makes up a substantial portion of the total swim time in competition, and efficient turns can determine finishing positions in many competitions. Swim turns can be a neglected area of performance gain. This is largely due to the difficulty in extracting performance measures that might lead to improvement. An inertial sensor was used to assess the different phases of the swimming turn and the data were then compared to the synchronised video data. As a case study, two elite swimmers, a competitive pool swimmer and an elite Triathlete, were compared as a demonstration of the technology as a potential tool for routine use. The participants were asked to perform their typical tumble turn at two velocities. Timing of the rotation relative to the turn’s push off was measured. The inertial sensor detected differences in rotation between the two swimmers tested. The sensor reported that push off occurred for the competitive swimmer before 908and for the Triathlete after 908of rotation and was confirmed by video footage. © 2011 Taylor &amp

In this study, a tri-axial accelerometer was attached to a flying disc to measure the kinematics during flight. A subject performed disc throwing. High speed video cameras were used to capture release and end points to validate boundary measurements. Results of the acceleration wave showed a sinusoidal pattern during the flight phase. According to the results of an additional verification experiment, we classified components of the acceleration wave during the flight phase to estimate the angular velocity of the disc, and validated it using high speed video cameras. 中高年を対象とした、ITを活用した生活習慣改善プログラム「インターネット健康コミュニティ」の概要とその効果について述べる。生活習慣改善は、長期に継続して取り組むこと、また本人が主体的に取り組むことが重要である。本プログラムのインターネットでの記録蓄積・コミュニケーションと対面型のコミュニケーションを併用しているという特徴は、食事・運動記録の蓄積によりセルフモニタリングが可能となること、対面でのコミュニケーションが継続的な記録の蓄積の原動力となりえることが示唆された。(著者抄録)

Modelling swimmer's speeds over the course of a race

A stochastic model of swimming speed over the course of a male 200 m freestyle swimming race is proposed. It builds on a dynamical model reflecting the trade-off between drag and propulsion in swimming. The parameters of the model are estimated from elapsed time data observed at several points along the pool. The model fits the data well and also provides a good description of the swimming strategies of each swimmer from phase to phase in the race. An individual factor measuring how much faster or slower the individual swims relative to the average swimming speed of the race is simultaneously estimated in the course of fitting the model. This factor is, as expected, closely related to the final outcome of the race.

We measured aerodynamic forces acting on real jumping flights in the take-off phase as well as a quasi-steady flight phase. The frame rate was 250 frames/s. It is concluded that the present aerodynamic force data derived from the image analysis are found to be in fair agreement with existing wind tunnel data for the cases of jumping flights in the quasi-steady flight phase. The aerodynamic data in the cases of relatively large forward leaning angle, which is typical in the initial phase of a jumping, could also be obtained. The lift in the take-off phase is relatively larger when compared with the quasi-steady flight phase.

The purpose of this Study was to develop and validate an automatic procedure using accelerometers and angular rate sensors for detecting exact gait events: heel contact (HC), toe contact (TC), heel off (HO) and toe off (TO). For this purpose, two miniature-sized light sensors were attached to the right shoe which measured triaxial acceleration and biaxial angular velocity of various positions of the shoe while ground reaction force and marker data were recorded at the same time as reference measurements. Healthy men walked on a walkpath at self-selected normal speed with the instrumented shoes on. An automated algorithm was developed to detect HC, TC, HO and TO from the acceleration and angular velocity signals, which were compared with reference data from force plates and markers. The results showed that our method demonstrated similar HC and TO to those with force plates and markers. Moreover, this method well detected stance phase duration. However, TC and HO differed among the three methods (force plates vs. markers vs. sensors). We concluded that the system using inertia sensors can identify TC and HO accurately and be used in gait analysis.

Aerodynamic forces, drag and lift were estimated by the body attached inertia sensors and high speed videography in ski jumping. Last ISEA conference, the authors presented our new method for the aerodynamic study on ski Jumping. In this paper, we propose more robust and reliable measurement system by using wireless technology. Wireless 6DOF inertia sensor platform, which has a built-in tri-axial accelerometer and three single axial gyroscopes, was attached on the jumper's low back. The authors adopted IEEE802.15.4 for the start trigger and real time monitoring during long training session. Sensor also has a flush memory inside for one hour data storage at 250Hz. The primary target of the present study is to extract the aerodynamic force data during real jumping flight. Angular velocity on the sagittal plane was directly measured from the gyroscope. Then we could obtain the jumper's body pitch angle by its time integration. The accelerations with respect to the body local coordinate system which was determined by the body pitch angle, indicated the drag and lift forces. The assessment of the aerodynamic forces of ski jumping was examined by both of the sensor data and the kinematical data in this study.

The purpose of this research is to estimate the velocity, angular velocity and direction of the rotational axis of the flying ball by the accelerometer. A subject performed pitching by using the sensor ball. And, the closed up release point image was acquired using the high speed cameras. The distance from the release point to the switch is measured image analysis and the velocity of each trial was estimated by the flight time of the ball. The angular velocity was estimated from the gravitational and the translational acceleration. The direction of the rotational axis was estimated from the component of the centrifugal acceleration. Each estimated value was compared to the value calculated by the high speed cameras. The velocity difference between the estimation value and the calculation value was about 1.85 (m/s). The difference of the angular velocity was about 0.57 (rad). The difference of the rotational axis was about 0.41 (rad). And it was observed that the rotational axis on the sensor coordinate system changed during flight phase.

In this study, tri-axial accelerometer was installed in a ball to measure the acrodynamic forces during the ball's flight. The control experiments to validate were conducted besides the pitching experiment, to examine ball linear or angular velocity components independently. These were performed using a turntable and free fall test, respectively. The acceleration data of the throwing experiment showed a semi-sinusoidal wave pattern. Oil the other hand, this wave pattern was not observed in the acceleration data of both the rotational table experiment and free-fall experiment. It was revealed that the change of the orientation vectors of the gravitational acceleration and the translation acceleration on the sensor coordinate system caused the sinusoidal acceleration pattern.

A ski jumping flight analysis was attempted on the basis of the high-speed digital video image taken at Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium in Japan. Initial 40m of flights of 120-m jumping after take-off were recorded by a fixed high-speed video camera at a frame rate of 250 frames/s. After some corrections, a number of time series data were extracted for the loci of key parts of a jumper such as the waist, the ski boots and the ski tip as well as for key angles representing a jumper posture such as the ski angle and the forward leaning angle. It is demonstrated that the aerodynamic force data during real jumping flights, in particular in the early phase of a flight can be derived from video image.

The purpose of this study was to develop a microcomputer-based acceleration logger device for the swimming stroke monitoring. The authors measured the swimmer's tri-axial wrist acceleration and applied this device for the fatigue evaluation of the swimmers. The experimental protocol led the swimmers exhausted after the crawl stroke interval training. Every single stroke was determined by the impact acceleration peak, which appeared on the x and z-axis acceleration. The change of the underwater stroke phases was identified by the characteristics of the acceleration peaks. In their exhaustion, the y-axis acceleration, which was longitudinal forearm acceleration decreased at the beginning of the upsweep phase. At that time, the swimmer could not extend his elbow joint. Since the developed acceleration data logger could provide us the information about the underwater stroke phases and it would be a helpful tool in the swimming training.

' The authors developed a microcomputer-based data logging device to evaluate the swimming stroke motion. This newly developed device enabled observation of the tri-axial wrist accelerations in swimming over a one hour-period with no-restrictions. In this study, we looked at the change in wrist acceleration affected by swimmer's fatigue during intensive interval training. The direct linear transformation method was used for kinematical quantitative evaluation. A blood lactate test was used as a physical quantitative evaluation of the swimmer's fatigue. It was observed that swimmers' stroke motion changed with increased exhaustion. And these changes were also observed in acceleration patterns.'

'Swimmer's propulsive force is maily produced by his arm strokes. Swimmers and coaches are very interested in underwater arm stroke motion. However, so far, in order to examine stroke motion, we had to prepare underwater cameras for the kinematical observation. Although we could prepare those facilities, it was very difficult for us to detect which stroke phase would be improved, or which underwater phase would be changed by their fatigue. The authors reported that the swimmer's wrist acceleration has several characteristics of their swimming styles. Some are common between subjects and the others are swimmer's own characteristics. In addition, swimmer's skill level is appeared their wrist acceleration. The authors developed microcomputer-based data logging device for swimming research. This newly developed device make us observe tri-axial swimmer's wrist acceleration in swimming over an hour with non-restricted. We applied it for the evaluation of swimming stroke motion. Especially, in this study, we focused on the change of the wrist acceleration by swimmer's fatigue during intensive interval training. We took three dimensional motion analysis for the kinematical quantitative evaluation and blood lactate test as a physical quantitative evaluation of the swimmer's fatigue. As a result, swimmers' stroke motion had changed under their exhaustion. And those change were also observed in acceleration patterns.'

In order to collect information concerned with the development of a measuring device for baseball pitching, pattern of motion and ball speed during a baseball pitch were estimated from acceleration measured at the wrist through multivariate analysis. The subjects were 26 college baseball players (eight pitchers, five catchers, nine infielders and four outfielders). Three accelerometers were attached to the wrist of each subject. The subjects then pitched fifteen times, with intensities ranging from weak to full, to a defensive net set up six meters distant. The accelerometers were arranged perpendicularly to each other on three axes : distal-proximal direction, ulnar-radial direction, and dorsalpalmar direction. The ball speed was measured with a laser device set between the subjects and the defensive net. The time of ball-release was detected using electrical conductive tape placed on the tip of each subjects index and middle fingers and the ball. After extracting the 18 parameters relating to amplitude and time that characterize the acceleration wave, the 26 subjects were classified into three groups-A, B and C-by cluster analysis, and ball speed was estimated in each group by multiple regression analysis. The estimation errors were 2.3 ± 1.8% in group A, 2.5 ± 2.3% in group B, 2.4 ± 2.4% in group C, and 3.4 ± 2.8% for all data. For estimating the ball speed, acceleration in the distal-proximal direction was more effective than that in the other two directions.

'In the field of experiment or data analysis, we need both a good data storage tool and a computational tool. A combination of databases and Mathematica will be an ideal solution for such situation. In order to satisfy this need, we built a mathlink program, 'Mathgres' which connects PostgreSQL with Mathematica. 'Mathgres' makes us store Mathematica data into PostgreSQL and retrieve it to Mathematica. As the result of this environment, we found; (1) Instead of scattering the data files in saving, database can integrate the data and makes the process of data analysis smooth. (2) We can easily maintain both the experimental data and its related information together. This is very useful tool in the sports biomechanics field.'

'We observed swimmers' right forearm acceleration in swimming using the tri-axes strain gaged accelerometer. The results of the experiment shows that there were some characteristics about each stroke style and subjectユs own stroke pattern in accelerations. It was suggested that there were possibilities to analyze each phase of the swimming stroke from the acceleration signal directly. We normalized each stroke cycle duration into [0, 1]. Acceleration values were extracted from X, Y, Z axes at the same interval with respect to normalized time. We discriminated whether a certain one cycle acceleration pattern had belonged to which stroke style, such as freestyle or breast stroke. In this study, we applied the Maharanobisユs generalized distance to our study which is a one of the method of the discriminant analysis. We discriminated a certain acceleration series in case of N = 10, 20, 25. The results of this discrimination indicated that there were possibility that we could discriminate a certain one stroke cycle belongs to which stroke styles in high accuracy using acceleration signals(Error Discriminant Ratio = 1.96[%]).'

'In this study, we investigated the acceleration in punch motion of some martial arts, such as Karate, Boxing, Syorinji Kenpo and non athlete. We predicted the peak impact force of straight punch motion and discriminated the patterns of these martial arts using the time series of their wrist acceleration.In sports trainig, players need feedback of their performance or form in their movement as quickly as possible. Up to now, they usually depended it on motion analysis method by the cine or video films. But it is not practical at the training situation, because it takes a lot of time to get the results of the analysis. On the other hand, the acceleration signal from the playersユ movement is suitable for real time analysis. In martial arts, the impact force of the punch motion is one of the index of playersユ performance. We predicted the impact force by the acceleration time series with high accuracy (r = 0.923 to 0.966 in case of N = 20 about athletes). This method enables us to predict players's performance by only acceleration time series. And each martial arts school, they have a traditional form of their punch motion. We also discriminated these patterns from the acceleration time series.'

Hard braking of a bicycle often causes ruler over the handlebar . To Analyse this phenomenon, we assumed that bicycle-rider system consist of rigid body model which have one mass and one arm. Input of this system was braking force function which acts as frictional force between tire and road surface . We analyzed this model by computer simulation method. Results of computer simulation well showed experiment tal data. Simulation showed, if rider braked very hard with him over the handlebar, he can avoid danger, as quickly as he could release brake levers, or as far as he couldshift his seated position backward.
