Diffusion-Based Tractography: Visualizing dense white matter connectivity from 3D tensor fields

In this paper, we present a novel method, called diffusion-based tractography (DBT), for visualizing diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging datasets. The DBT method generates 3D textures similar to the line integral convolution (LIC) by smearing 3D random dot textures. In contrast to the LIC method, which only traces a single
direction, the DBT method takes into account both linear and planar diffusion components, and suppresses excessive
blur by an analysis of three decomposed components. We will demonstrate that the DBT method is effective for visualizing dense white matter connectivity from 3D diffusion tensor fields and that it is suitable for hardware acceleration using commodity graphics processors.

ボリュームデータの複雑な内部構造を視覚的に解析する手法の一つに断面の表示がある．内部構造を理解するためには，対象の特徴をよくとらえた断面を抽出することが必要である．しかし，既存システムの断面生成機能では，ユーザが経験や知識をもとに試行錯誤を繰り返して断面を指定するため，必ずしも特徴的な断面が得られているとはいえなかった．そこで 本稿では，複数の特徴的な断面を自動的に提示する手法を提案する．本提案手法は，ボリュームデータにおける等値面の位相的な振る舞いに着目することで，その特徴をとらえる断面を自動抽出し，その断面をユーザに効果的に提示する．更に，実データに適用することで，提案手法の有効性を示す．

位相的ボリューム骨格化は，スカラ値に関する等値面の位相的な遷移を，ボリューム骨格木とよばれるグラフとして抽出する手法である．ボリューム骨格木は，入力スカラ場に潜在する大局的な構造を効果的に表現するが，逆にスカラ場の量子化や高周波ノイズの影響を受けやすく，大局的な構造の抽出に時間を要するケースが頻繁に生じていた．そこで，本論文ではこれらの計算に必要な時間を大幅に短縮するように位相的ボリューム骨格化アルゴリズムを改良する．具体的には，ボリューム骨格木抽出の計算アルゴリズムの改良それ自体に加え，スカラ値補間のための位相的な誤差基準を考慮した適応的四面体分割の基本アイデアに基づいて改良を行う．シミュレーションなどによるボリュームデータの解析例を通じて，本手法が大幅に計算時間を短縮できることを示し，さらに，得られたボリューム骨格木を用いて大規模なボリュームデータも効果的に可視化できることを示す．

Hierarchical causality relationships reside ubiquitously in the reality. Since the relationships take intricate forms with two kinds of links – hierarchical abstraction and causal association, there exists no single visualization style that allows the user to comprehend them effectively. This paper introduces a novel information visualization framework which can change existing 3D and 2D display styles interactively according to the user’s visual analysis demands. The two visualization styles play a complementary role, and the change in the style relies on morphing so as to maintain the user’s cognitive map. Based on this framework, we have developed a general-purpose prototype system, which provides the user with an enriched set of functions not only for supporting fundamental information seeking, but bridging analytic gaps to accomplishing high-level analytic tasks such as knowledge discovery and decision making. The effectiveness of the system is illustrated with an application to the analysis of a nuclear-hazard cover-up problem.
