High-rise buildings can be significantly affected by external excitations such as earthquakes and wind and tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are widely used to address this issue. Conventional TMDs can only suppress a single vibration mode. Therefore, a bi-directional tuned mass damper (BTMD) has been proposed for buildings with different natural frequencies in the two horizontal directions. However, adjusting the natural frequency of a BTMD to accommodate changes and uncertainty in the natural frequencies of a building is challenging. This study proposes a novel BTMD named the hybrid tuned mass damper with rigid body swinging and horizontal spring vibration (RH-TMD) as a solution, which combines rolling motion of an auxiliary mass on a rail induced by horizontal spring and swinging motion of the rail and mass in the orthogonal direction. The natural periods can be adjusted by modifying the weight of the mass in rolling motion and the length of the pendulum in swinging motion. A rotary damper with an adjustable damping coefficient is adopted as a damping mechanism.
First, numerical analysis using a 50-story model are conducted to examine the performance of the RH-TMD. The vibration characteristics, natural periods and damping coefficients of the RH-TMD in the two horizontal directions are optimized to minimize the root mean square response to white noise ground acceleration input. Its performance is compared with a conventional (simple) TMD with a natural period and damping coefficient optimized only in a single direction with respect to absolute acceleration and story drift responses to seismic ground motion.
In addition, shaking table experiments are conducted using a small-scale single-layer specimen with a similarity ratio of 1:100, equipped with either an RH-TMD or a simple TMD to compare the responses to white noise ground acceleration and simulated seismic motions.
The results of the numerical analysis and shaking table experiments validate the excellent performance of the RH-TMD in reducing absolute acceleration and story drift responses in the two horizontal directions.

The P–Δ effect is well known, in which an overturning moment emerges due to geometric nonlinearity when a gravity-loaded structure undergoes a large deformation. Similarly, when a column undergoes a large horizontal displacement, a torsional torque emerges to preserve the state of equilibrium. The speaker named this effect “Q–Δ effect.” Although the effect has not been considered in structural design, he has shown that periodical nonlinear restoring torque of the Q–Δ effect can produce a non-negligible torsional response in a structure during earthquakes owing to its internal resonance, named “Q–Δ resonance.” This talk will first explain the theory of the Q–Δ effect and the mechanism of the Q–Δ resonance. Then, he will present the results of shaking-table experiments using a reduced specimen and finite element analysis of a full-scale model of high-rise building under long period ground motions. This resonance phenomenon is a blind spot in seismic design, and given the mechanism of its occurrence, it may need to be considered in wind-resistant design as well. Researchers and engineers are expected to listen to this talk to widely promote proactive countermeasures.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) has attracted significant attention as a method for rapidly and efficiently assessing the damage state of buildings immediately after an earthquake. Application of SHM to houses could facilitate prompt evaluations of the risk of collapse from subsequent earthquakes, thereby reducing casualties caused by aftershocks and other seismic events. This study proposes a damage classification method for wooden buildings based on acceleration responses, using long short-term memory (LSTM), which is well-suited for capturing the long-term dependencies of time-series data.
The analysis focuses on a specimen from the dataset of “Experimental Validation of Design Methods for Three-Story Wooden Frame Structures,” published by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience. A building model was constructed and analyzed using “wallstat,” a numerical analysis software for wooden structures. To generate training data for a damage classifier, response analysis of the model was conducted using 2,000 simulated seismic ground motions consisting of equal number of pulse and non-pulse types ground motions. The acceleration response of the first and second floors were converted input data for the damage classifier so that each input segment contains one second of acceleration responses. To prevent data imbalance caused by similar input segments with small variations in acceleration, a “lag” was introduced, ensuring that each input segment shifts by a specific number of data points relative to the previous one.
In SHM, misclassifying an unsafe condition as safe poses a severe risk to building users, as users may overlook potential building collapse hazards leading to fatalities. To address this, training data near the threshold between safe and unsafe models were excluded from safe model datasets to reduce the possibility of misclassification.
Three hyperparameters of the damage classifier, the number of LSTM units, the number of nodes in the first fully connected layer, and the learning rate, were optimized using the response surface method. This optimization process identified a combination of hyperparameter values that achieved high classification accuracy. A two-level central composite design was employed for the design of experiments.
The proposed damage classifier demonstrated a high accuracy of 92.4%, marking a significant step toward practical implementation. This study highlights the effectiveness of LSTM for damage classification in wooden buildings and underscores the utility of the response surface method in optimizing machine learning models.

The shape of the restoring force–story drift angle relationship curve (hysteresis loop) derived from the seismic response data of a building changes depending on its structural health. Taking advantage of this property, this study proposed a method to assess the risk of collapse due to future earthquake motions based on hysteresis loop images considering the time axis direction using a three-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN). The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by comparing the accuracy and recall of the unsafe model between the proposed method and a prior research method using a two-dimensional CNN. It was confirmed that the proposed method adjusting the image size and division number in the time axis direction has a higher accuracy and robustness against observation noise.

塔上比が大きく曲げ変形が卓越する建物に関し，幾何学的非線形性に起因するねじれモードの内部共振現象であるQ–Δ共振の特性を分析するため，縮小試験体を設計・製作し振動台実験を行った．その結果，Q–Δ共振条件を満たす場合にねじれ応答が大きくなることを確認した．また，塔上比がより小さく曲げ変形が生じにくい試験体とのねじれ応答の比較を行った結果，前者の方がねじれ応答のピークが急峻になることが確認された．

The Data Science Working Group of the Numerical Shaking Table Committee of the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience is working on the development of structural health monitoring technology using artificial intelligence.
In the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, some residents returned to their wooden houses that had been severely damaged by the strong ground motion, and the houses collapsed due to the following main shock causing human casualties. This kind of disaster should be reduced if they could understand the remaining performance of the house using a structural health monitoring system.
Deep neural networks have been reported to achieve high accuracy in various fields in pattern recognition and evaluation of regression equations with a large amount of training data. The authors have also taken the same approach of preparing big data for training by conducting time history response analysis with many input earthquake motions and damage patterns in advance.
However, the stiffness and strength of the members assumed at the design stage do not necessarily match the actual values of the completed building. Epistemic uncertainty exists, and it is desirable to recognize damage patterns and evaluate residual performance with features that are robust to such variations.
In this study, we propose a method of generating training data with variability based on the results of elemental experiments conducted in conjunction with full-scale wooden building experiments in the E-Defense experiment, and constructing training data by providing input seismic motions of appropriate intensity so that the number of training data with and without damage is balanced.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is useful for quick and efficient damage recognition of a building under seismic excitation. It has the potential to replace the emergency safety evaluation, which is conducted after major earthquakes in purpose to prevent a secondary disaster from aftershocks. SHM systems are popular for large-scale civil structures in the world, but their application to low-rise buildings such as wooden houses are still limited.
One of the challenges in predicting the response of a wooden structure is that the effect of variance in its material property is considerably significant. To solve this problem, we propose a method using global sensitivity analysis with Sobol’ indices based on polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) to find dependent parameters. By considering only material parameters with a high impact on the variability of the quality of interest, we can reduce computational cost in time history response analyses. PCE is a popular technique in the field of uncertainty quantification, which enables us to model the response of a dynamical system with uncertainty. PCE is also known to be highly compatible with global sensitivity analysis, which allows to identify the dependent input variables that contribute most to the variability of the computational model response.
Based on the results of a full-scale three-story wooden building experiments and its member experiments conducted by E-Defense of National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience, we performed three-dimensional structural response analyses of a model of the specimen using a numerical collapsing simulation program, wallstat. As input ground motions, we used design ground motion specified by the Building Standard Law with an amplification factor of 120%. Multiple models were prepared with a varied value of material properties to consider the epistemic uncertainty. As a result, the sensitivity analysis clarified that the variance of Young's modulus in columns and beams had a major contribution to the variance of the maximum inter-story drift angle of the model.

Structural health monitoring is effective for quick and efficient recognition of earthquake damage to a building. However, its applications to wooden buildings are still limited. One of the challenges in predicting the response of a wooden building is that the variance in its material property considerably affect its response. To handle this characteristic, we propose a method using global sensitivity analysis based on polynomial chaos expansion to select dominant material parameters in the variability of a quantity of interest. The method enables us to reduce the computational cost in multiple time-history response analysis, which is necessary to construct a damage classifier that takes the variance of material property into account by machine learning.

This study investigates the design of a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for a seismic control device to improve the resilience of a medical facility. The functionality of a medical facility is quantified based on a fault tree. A frame-work to evaluate the recovery curve of a medical facility is constructed based on the fault tree and recovery-time probability models for damaged medical devices. Furthermore, the approach to design parameters for an LQR control system is investigated to minimize the time required to recover up to the de-fined functionality level after the onset of an earthquake. A case analysis is conducted using a model of a ten-story hospital building with a control device installed on its top floor, and the resulting expected recovery time is evaluated. It was confirmed that the proposed method could reduce the recovery time even for the different input ground motion from that used in a design stage.

The author’s research group has proposed a damage pattern classification method using a deep neural network (DNN) for monitoring the structural health of a building. We aimed to make the DNN for damage pattern classification, more accountable using the “interpretation” and “explanation” methods. We proposed generating input data that maximize the classification probability of each damage pattern, called a prototype, and drew a trajectory on a two-dimensional phase plane of appropriately selected state variables with color information on the degree of influence on the classification. We applied the proposed method to DNNs for damage classification of a wooden structure and a steel frame. The acceleration–velocity plane provided useful information about the mechanical characteristics of the DNN used in the damage pattern classification, and we thus demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We developed a computer-vision-based system to control the response of medical instruments with casters in a building subjected to earthquake excitation. The controller employed a neural network, and reinforced learning based on the dynamic simulations of a controlled instrument under building floor motion was conducted. In the dynamic simulations, we used the Open Dynamics Engine, which is a simulator library of three-dimensional rigid body dynamics and introduced a friction model to simulate the dynamic behavior of the casters. To accurately simulate the dynamic behavior of the controlled instrument, we considered the control delay of the proposed system and introduced stochastic models of errors to identify the displacement of the instrument using computer vision. To validate the proposed system, we performed dynamic simulations of a controlled instrument under building floor motion. It was revealed that the instrument response was significantly suppressed by introducing the stochastic model of errors in the training of NN. This result suggests the usefulness of stochastic models in enhancing the performance of reinforced learning based on dynamic simulations.

国立研究開発法人防災科学技術研究所では開発中のシミュレーションシステム「数値震動台」を建築物の構造ヘルスモニタリングに活用するための研究を行っている．対象建物について複数の損傷パターンを想定し，様々な入力地震動に対して地震応答解析を行うことで，深層ニューラルネットワークの訓練データを多量に生成することができる．本報告では鋼構造骨組の振動台実験結果を用いて学習を行い，深層ニューラルネットワークの損傷パターン判別精度を検討した結果を紹介する．また，未学習の損傷パターンに対する誤判定を防ぐため，新たに開発した未学習パターンデータ検知法も紹介する．

2016年熊本地震の余震記録を用いて震源が近接したペアを作成し、フーリエ振幅平均値とフーリエ位相差の関係を巻き込み正規分布を用いてモデル化した。次にフーリエ振幅平均値から巻き込み正規分布のパラメータを予測する回帰式を求め、その回帰係数と震源間距離と震源距離の回帰式を導き、要素地震の位相の設定方法を提案した。提案した位相モデル、ランダム位相モデル、コヒーレント位相モデルの3つの模擬地震動と実観測記録の加速度応答スペクトルのRMS誤差を比較し、提案モデルが他の2つモデルに比べ誤差が小さいことを確認した。

In controlling a seismic isolation floor in a building during an earthquake, it is important to reduce not only the acceleration of the equipment on the isolation floor but also the relative displacement of the isolation floor to the placing building floor. In this research, to reduce the response of the equipment on the isolation floor, we investigate the effectiveness of a distributed polynomial control of a semi-active damper for an isolation floor. In a design of the control the total sum of kinetic energy and elastic potential energy is minimized, which are calculated using the relative velocity and relative displacement of an isolation floor as a cost function, and the state variables of the equipment are measured by the local sensor. We compared the performances of the proposed distributed polynomial control and a distributed linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control by conducting numerical simulation and shaking table experiment. As a result, we observed that the proposed control could reduce the absolute acceleration and relative displacement response of an isolated floor more than the distributed LQG control.

In order to synthesize simulated ground motion more properly, we propose models of horizontal components for synthesized wave using the stochastic Green’s function method considering dominant direction. By using aftershock records of the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake, we calculate the mean square value of acceleration and search for the dominant directions. Then, we adopt directions with small angel difference, strike and orthogonal directions, as two directions for the model. In the same manner as Pao and Kawase (2007), optimum values of the duration time and the peak time are obtained by fitting an envelope to the section maximum values of acceleration, and we derive regression equations to estimate the duration time and the peak time, which are parameters of the Boore’s envelope function, using magnitude and hypocentral distance.

To employ neural networks in structural health monitoring, a large volume of training data is required. The data can be obtained by a generative learning method based on high-precision simulation of seismic responses. We investigate appropriate machine learning parameters such as the numbers of layer nodes in a deep neural network and the number of epochs for training. Response records measured in shaking table tests of a steel frame structure are used as training, validation, and test data. Our results show that response data of only the translational component can achieve high accuracy of damage pattern classification. Regarding the length of response data, clear difference is not observed in two durations of 1 s and 2 s. We propose a method to detect unlearned damage pattern data using the Mahalanobis distance.

When an earthquake occurs, the people in and/or contents of buildings may suffer damage due to the sliding or overturning of furniture and equipment or the falling of objects even if the structure of the building experiences no damage. In this study, using numerical analyses, we investigate a model of effective equipment caster wheel control to reduce damage caused by the moving and overturning of equipment during earthquakes and propose a control method to switch the lock and free conditions of the caster wheel. In the numerical analyses, a simulator library of three-dimensional rigid body dynamics is used and two-direction earthquake ground motion is input into a model of a 10-story steel frame building. The horizontal displacement and the falling down of the equipment model are expressed depending on the caster lock condition.

We compared the damage occurrence probabilities for two control designs, specifically, 1) minimizing the response to the design ground motions having a particular level of ground motion intensity (the conventional approach) and 2) minimizing the probability of damage occurrence (the proposed approach). The damage occurrence probability is calculated using a seismic hazard curve and a fragility curve. The fragility curves for the above two control designs were formulated based on the time-history response analysis using design ground motions with a wide range of ground motion intensities. As a result, while the former probability was 0.55% (the conventional approach), the latter probability was 0.44% (the proposed approach) thus clearly showing the improved performance. In addition, we confirmed that the proposed approach produces a smaller probability even when the structural parameters are changed from the initial design values.

In design of buildings, structural engineers take care of principal structural components. Through the experiences of earthquake disasters, the design techniques and regulations for these principal components have been improved to a certain level. On the other hand, non-structural components have not been considered well although the damage risk and threat to occupant’s life have been pointed out for long time. The seismic safety of ceilings, piping, and escalators are supposed to be secured by architects, equipment engineers, and mechanical engineers, respectively. Unfortunately, falling non-structural components caused a considerable number of casualties in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. Consequently, regulations for ceilings of large-span buildings and escalators have been amended. However, there was no major revision in the fundamental regulation for non-structural components. This regulation sometimes fails to consider the resonance effect between a building and a non-structural component with similar natural periods. To achieve the comprehensive seismic safety of buildings, we have to discuss and address a problem of vertical division system in a building design.

A sliding mode control is one of control methods with superior robustness against structural parameter change and uncertainty of a model. However, a sliding mode control requires multiple control parameters and a design method of these parameters has not been established. In this study, we propose a design procedure to determine the control parameters so as to minimize the damage probability in a certain service period of a building. A semi-actively controlled base-isolated building is studied and the damage probability based on the proposed design procedure is compared with that based on a conventional procedure that determines parameters to minimize the response under design input ground motion with a certain level of intensity.

Many researchers have investigated the vibration characteristics of mid-story isolated buildings. However, a formula to estimate their maximum responses has still room for improvement. A complex complete quadratic combination method is reformed using mode-dependent peak factors. The response of a mid-story isolated building model under white noise ground motion is analyzed and it is confirmed that the reformed formula gives slightly larger, safer-side estimates in most cases.

Finite element analysis is carried out for simultaneously investigating global displacement and local stress responses of laminated rubber bearings under earthquake excitation. Natural rubber bearings are attached at the base of a building frame. The frame members as well as the rubber bearings are discretized into hexahedral finite elements with more than 3 million degrees of freedom. It is shown that the incompressible and hardening properties of natural rubber can be accurately simulated, and the non-uniform deformation and stress distribution of rubber bearings under static and dynamic loads are successfully evaluated through a finite element analysis.

有限要素法による不整形地盤の時刻歴応答解析を行い，地形効果を含む地震応答の簡易推定について検討した．その結果，以下の知見を得た．1) 地形の不整形性により，崖周辺での応答スペクトル分布が複雑になる．また，弾性解析と比較して非線形解析では，剛性低下に伴い減衰が大きくなることで加速度応答は小さくなる傾向がある．2) 不整形地盤による速度応答スペクトルの補正係数についてばらつきを含めて検討した．不整形性を考慮した場合，崖下では1次元解析と比較して過小評価するのに対し，崖上では応答が増大する．

建物・横引配管連成系モデルを用い、地震時の被害発生確率について状態ベクトルの分散共分散行列の微分方程式に基づく信頼性評価解析により検討を行った。その結果、配管が共振現象を引き起こしやすい階数の建物では、配管系の被害発生確率が大きくなることが確認された。よって、これらの建物では共振現象を詳細に考慮した設計用震度を被害発生確率に基づき設けることで、より設備配管の被害を軽減できると思われる。

A reliable index is proposed to assess damage severity of a reinforced concrete (RC) beam based on an experiment. The index is fractal dimension of time-history of the fractal dimension of response waveform to impact excitation, which is calculated by the box counting method. The proposed index can evaluate damage level that requires repair with good accuracy. The finite element dynamic analysis shows the proposed index has a potential to evaluate damage level of an RC beam with a different boundary condition from the experiment.

To improve estimation accuracy of damage of buildings on irregular ground, amplification factors of response spectra is studied using 2-D ground model and compensation factors are proposed for 1-D ground model results. First, the 2-D models of a slope and a hill are constructed which are typical in a peripheral region of a loam plateau. Then, a Ricker wavelet with the central frequency of 2 Hz or 3 Hz and the maximum velocity 100 cm/s2 is input on engineering bedrock and nonlinear time history analysis is carried out. A response spectrum on ground surface is evaluated and compensation factors are calculated.

Effective seismic response control of a building is studied to reduce sway of elevator rope. A building with elevator system controlled by active mass damper (AMD) is modeled, and the evaluation function of the optimum regulator is constructed in which story drift, absolute acceleration response and relative displacement between a building and elevator rope are considered. Result of examination in frequency domain revealed that frequency range exists where elevator rope sway widely though a building does not sway and the sway of the rope is reduced more effective by considering the rope. However, the response in a high frequency range should be carefully considered.

The project of E-Simulator is under way at Hyogo Earthquake Engineering Research Center (E-Defense) that facilitates the world’s largest shaking table. The E-Simulator uses ADVC as a platform. In this study, we report the results of high-precision FE-analysis for simulation of collapse behavior of steel building frames. It is shown that elastoplastic dynamic analysis can be carried out for a high-rise building with more than 70 million DOFs. The results of a total collapse test of a 4-story frame in E-Defense are also simulated.

This study shows effectiveness of control of both a building structure and an elevator rope using active mass dumper. In the analysis model, a 60-story building with a roped elevator is assumed and a driving machine is placed on the top floor. Optimal regulator theory is employed for vibration control. To the performance function, a term of response of an elevator rope is added as well as terms of building response and control force, and a factor is multiplied to each term. Using multiple input earthquakes, appropriate combination of the factors is examined.

敷地地盤と耐震等級の違いによる木造建物の地震被害確率を比較するため，地盤モデルと木造建物モデルの剛性・耐力を変化させ解析を行った。同じ等級の建物でも地盤ごとに建物被害確率が異なることや，地盤によって等級を上げた時の建物被害の低減効果が異なるとことが定量的に明らかにされた。特に粘性土の地盤では，他の土質よりも被害低減効果は大きい傾向があるが，層厚によってその効果のばらつきも大きいことが明らかとなった。

建物の耐震性能を，建物敷地に応じある発生確率をもった地震動の周期特性や継続時間を考慮した模擬地震動を作成して，建物を使用する期間に被害が発生する確率を地震応答解析結果より評価を行った。地表面最大速度を媒介変数としたフラジリティ曲線とハザード曲線を用いた結果と比較し，フラジリティ曲線を用いた手法では，対象地点の地盤特性を考慮できておらず，被害確率の評価が適切に行えないことが明らかとなった。
