A Research on Visualization System for Agricultural Product Supply Chain

Freshness of agricultural products is very important for health of customers and profit of farmers. In this paper,we deal with vegetable supply chain including production activities such as planting, mowing, fertilization, harvesting and distribution activities such as transportation from farm to distribution center, distribution center to retailer, restaurants,and consumers. There are hundreds of tons waste throughout the supply chain including consumption every year, and it becomes big social problem in Japan. In this paper, aiming to reduce waste of vegetables and other fresh agricultural products, we develop a visualization system of vegetables where those production activities are recorded using sensing technology, and demonstrated to buyers ahead of bidding in the distribution center. Since those production activities were carried out according to GAP (good agricultural practices) standards, buyers may correctly determine quality of the agricultural product ahead of harvest and put there bidding price before harvest. This is an assumption in this paper, which means that agricultural product could be harvested after demand is determined, or the harvesting activities performed for the fixed order, i.e., harvest to order (HTO). Through POC (proof of concept) of the system, we found that the visualization system can contribute to reduction of waste more than 15% same time it can generate GAP report automatically whenever it necessary according to the recorded data.

Research on Product Platform Configuration with Module Options

Platform-based product development has been regarded as a cost-efficient approach to handle wide product variety. The key to successful platform-based product development is finding the best combination of the platform configuration and modular design. Most research papers have focused on product platform configuration with a given module set without considering operation costs including the design cost, procurement costs and inventory costs. A new model is proposed in order to determine the optimal product platform configuration for a given external product family considering the vertical and horizontal selection of a module with multiple options and operation costs. The demand for the external product family is unknown, and normal distribution has been assumed. The module acquisition lead time varies along with the module acquisition amount and the transportation time. A hybrid methodology combining a simulated annealing and VNS (variable neighborhood search) is proposed and applied to solve the proposed model. Numerical examination was carried out for the purpose of evaluation. The results show that the proposed model can provide an optimal solution. This research makes two main contributions: the vertical and horizontal selection process of module options and the consideration of operation cost of module acquisition in product platform configuration.

Integrating optimal configuration of product platform and supplier selection in mass customization

Platform-based Product Development (PPD) approach is an effective way to achieve mass customization. The product platform configuration in PPD is to determine the number and composition of platforms for a product family. Different types of design strategy have often been found to satisfy product requirements, i.e., the matching-designed with higher platform development cost and lower customization cost, the over-designed or under-designed platforms with different performance in these two types of cost. Traditional research balances the cost trade-off within the design domain, and few studies include the procurement cost from suppliers. Involving the supplier selection requirements into product platform configuration was examined in this study with focus on module-based platforms. The proposed model contains development cost, sourcing cost, and customization cost, under given product architecture and given number of modules and associated options. We developed a solving algorithm applying the linearization method with Gurobi solver to solve the proposed nonlinear MIP (mixed integer programming) model. Numerical experiments are carried out and sensitivity analyses are performed to justify the proposed model. The results show that the optimal combination of suppliers and the optimal number of platforms depends on the given parameters, such as various cost parameters included in the model, product demand and lifetime. Sensitivity analyses show that the optimal number of product platforms will decrease as the development cost increases, while the number of platforms increases as the customization cost increases. The over-designed platform is more prevalent in the presence of high development cost and high customization cost. In contrast, the matching-designed platform is more suitable for low development cost and high customization cost.

Product platform configuration decision in NPD with uncertain demands and module options

Platform-based product development is a cost-efficient approach to satisfy wide range of customer preferences. One important problem is the product platform configuration, in which two types of platform configuration are widely used, either module selection or module integration. The platform configuration based on module selection provides a broader solution space of platform selection, while module integration facilitates product platform commonality to gain economic benefits. Up to date, most research focused on the platform configuration based on module selection with a given module set. In this paper, we propose a new model to determine the optimal platform configuration for an external product family, considering both module selection and integration. The demand for the external product family is uncertain and assumed to follow normal distribution. A hybrid methodology combining simulated annealing and variable neighbourhood search is proposed. A numerical examination is carried out for the purpose of evaluation. The results show that the proposed model can provide a practically good solution. Main contributions of this research are two folds, one is the balance point between module selection and module integration in the platform configuration and the other is that we take into account the operation cost of module acquisition to the platform configuration problem.

A research on two-stage production line building problems for processed cheese manufacturing

Production line design is one of the important research topics for constructing smart factories. Many research papers have been published concerning smart factories; however, most of them are focus on subjects such as automation. IoT (Internet of Things), AI (Artificial Intelligence) and other new technologies that are introduced to increase the efficiency of existing manufacturing lines based on the so-called philosophy of " status-quo improvement " . In this research, we consider a design problem for a new production line taking into consideration investment cost, operation cost, synchronization penalty and flexibility penalty. We emphasize synchronization and flexibility as new key performance indices to evaluate the level of intelligenced to the smart factory, in which a multiple number of equipment in two production processes can provide the proper number of combinations to satisfy the external demand remove. Based on a real case involving a major player in the dairy product processing industry in Japan, we focus on two core production processes in a processed cheese manufacturing line; melting process and filling process. We design the process to include investing in a multiple number of machines with different capacities, while minimizing the total cost giving consideration to investment, operations, synchronization and flexibility. Two types of decision variables are introduced representing investment and operation. Through numerical experiments and the case study, we show that the proper number of equipment and capacity can be obtained applying the proposed model. The proposed model can also be applied to those companies considering further investment in factory or production line.

Commitment Option Contract Selection

This paper considers an option contract in a two-stage two suppliers - one buyer supply chain (SC) when market demand is stochastic. The suppliers compete by offering a commitment option contract to the buyer. The contract is composed of three prices. It allows the buyer to purchase a firm quantity and reserve options before knowing the exact market demand. After realizing the exact demand, the buyer can choose the number of options to exercise. The aim of this paper is to determine an optimal ordering and selection strategy for the buyer. It also determines an optimal bidding strategy for the suppliers. Furthermore, this contract will be compared to a pure option contract. These contracts are justified through numerical examination, and it was found that buyers prefer the lower-cost products as as to satisfy the demand with a higher realization probability. Furthermore, it was found that in equilibrium, local suppliers earn profit from the exercised options, whereas overseas suppliers earn profit from the reserved options. The paper also shows that the commitment option price provides suppliers with a greater profit in comparison to a pure option contract under the same conditions.

Pricing supply chain option contracts: a bilevel programming approach

Purpose: This paper considers an option contract in a two-stage supplier-retailer supply chain (SC) when market demand is stochastic. The problem is a Stackelberg game with the supplier as a leader. This research assumes demand information sharing. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal pricing strategy of the supplier along with the optimal order strategy of the retailer in three option contract cases. Design/methodology/approach: The paper model the option contract pricing problem as a bilevel problem. The problem is then solved using bilevel programing methods. After computing, the generated outcomes are compared to a benchmark (wholesale price contract) to evaluate the contract. Findings: The results reveal that only one of the contract cases can arbitrarily allocate the SC profit. In both other cases, the Stackelberg supplier manages to earn the total SC profit. Further analysis of the first contract, show that from the supplier’s perspective, the first stage forecast inaccuracy is beneficial, whereas the demand uncertainty in the second stage is detrimental. This contracting strategy guarantees both players better outcomes compared to the wholesale price contract. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is the first that links the option contract literature to the bilevel programing literature. It also the first to solve the pricing problem of the commitment option contract with demand update where the retailer exercises the option before knowing the exact demand.

The SURUGA Gateway: An Advanced CPS Equipping Smart Factory

Cyber-physical system (CPS) is one core concept of Industry 4.0. A cyber space has mirror information of physical space and activities in the physical space are synchronized with activities in cyber space. SURUGA Gateway is a CPS, running in a Japanese robot component producer. Innovation process(design) and operation (manufacturing) process is integrated together on the SURUGA Gateway, enabling high quality, short leadtime, low cost, and high ?exibility. Various decisions were made in the cyber space, then executed in physical space automatically. Materials input to manufacturing process according to production plan which created by modi?ed ERP (enterprise resource planning) system, fabricated according to optimized routing and scheduling. All NC (numerical control) machines and MC (machining center) were connected and integrated on a centralized platform using Ethercat protocol and interface, and serial electronic signal control for old machines. The KAMISHIBAI (VPS: virtual production system) is embedded in the SURUGA Gateway,providing online training to assembly operators. Innovation process drives operation process, while know-how to improve efficiency and quality in operation process is feedback to the innovation process. The integration of innovation process and operation process, speci?cally the integration of design, material ?ow, machine ?ow and human resource is most successful point of the SURUGA Gateway. SURUGA Gateway successfully reduced leadtime by 80% and recognized as best practice in Hannover Messe and G20 business conference.

A Research on Robust Safety Stock Allocation Model to Deal with Uncertain Leadtime In an Acyclic Supply Network

Safety stock allocation problems including uncertainty in the supply-side have forced to assume a speci?c distribution of the lead time yet this is usually not reliable. From a guaranteed-service approach, a new model based on robust optimization in which no distribution is assumed is proposed. The robust model is a mixed-integer linear program. Then, the model is validated and applied to several complex real-case supply chains. Preliminary results are promising and show how the model could be a powerful tool for practitioners to manage risks from the supply-side in a robust yet efficient way.

Traditional demand forecasting methods are categorized as scientific methods (e.g., time series analysis or regression analysis) or methods based on experience and tacit knowledge (e.g., delphi method or market research). Recently, research that combines these forecasting methods has become a hot topic and categorized as a demand forecasting method based on the prediction market. It is known that the prediction market was able to accurately forecast the vote ratio for the US presidential election. In the field of supply chain management, the research is applied to forecast the future demand of products. In this study, we propose a demand forecasting method that uses a voting system based on a collective intelligence mechanism. We examine forecasting accuracy using real business data from a five-month period. According to statistical tests, we show that the forecasting method we propose performs more accurately than the existing method used in our company.

A study on the forecasting method based on extreme value distribution for sudden and large demand

In the printer manufacturing industry, it is known that business impact is especially large because of the due date penalty or opportunity loss (including sales loss of toner cartridge and drum cartridge) when an inventory shortage occurs. Furthermore, in this industry, due to occurrence of sudden and large demand, it is not clear how to analyze demand distribution from historical sales data and how much inventory should be kept. We reviewed various literature regarding the demand forecasting method for sudden and large demand, but we were unable to find a proper method, and therefore decided to develop a new method ourselves. In this research, we propose a new demand forecasting method based on extreme value distribution. In the method proposed, we first classify historical sales data, then we estimate the parameters of the extreme value distribution, and finally forecast future demand. Additionally, we tested our method using real business data. As a result, we found that the method proposed performs better than the current method being used by businesses and can avoid inventory shortages when sudden and large demand occurs.
