The idea that ``travel distance is a necessary evil'' has been a consistent theme in the history of urban facility location research. However, in modern urban planning, walking distance to facilities is increasingly viewed as a positive factor. This is due to the emergence of proposals for spatial design aimed at enhancing the quality of walking, proposals for compact urban design based on walking, and epidemiological evidence linking walking distance to improved health and reduced mortality. To achieve the optimal level of walking distance to facilities, this study proposes a facility location model to achieve the desired walking distance and another model to control the average mortality rate.

In this study, the pedestrian crossing behavior is discussed using the interventing opportunity
model. By modeling pedestrians' decision making about crossing, the possibility of carring out
jaywalking is derived. Based on this, the mathematical programing problem is formulated to
maximize the possibility of pedestirans' choosing a route of using crosswalk, and the optimal
crosswalk placement is analyzed. Through the possibilities related to pedestrians' choice of
crosswalk changes parametrically, it is confirmed that these values affect the optimal crosswalk
placement and the value of objective function. This mathematical model can apply to other
situation coexisting continuous and discrete opportunities.

This paper concerns with a system that delivers and collects goods at points in coastal areas and islands by an autonomously controlled drone that takes off and lands at a regular ferry vessel as the base. The pick-up and delivery points are, for example, the islands and coastal areas of Seto Inland Sea in Japan. It is possible to help residents with limited access to shopping facilities by this system. The proposed system can (1) reduce the flight distance comparing to flying a drone from land, (2) ensure the safety of inhabited area by flying over the sea, (3) create a logistics system with the ports of call of a regular ferry vessel as depots.

都市の道路網において右折禁止規制をかけると，同一起終点でも移動距離が伸びることがあるため平均移動距離は大きくなる．ところが米国大手運送会社UPSは，事故の可能性が高く，さらにアイドリング時間の増大につながる左折（米国では車は右側通行）を原則禁じた配送ルートを設定することで，燃料消費量および二酸化炭素排出量を削減することに成功した．本研究では，運送会社のみならず都市全体で右折を禁ずることで，より大きな効果が得られるのではないかという仮説に基づき，モデル解析を行った．具体的には，格子状道路網の街区辺上に一様分布する起終点間の移動距離・所要時間・燃料消費量についてそれぞれ平均値と確率密度関数を導出し，右折禁止規制をかける前後の結果を比較した．その結果，右折禁止規制によって平均移動距離は大きくなるが，ある規模以上の都市においては，所要時間・燃料消費量の面で右折禁止規制のほうが良い結果を得られることがあるということを示すことができた．また，その都市規模の分岐点も簡単な方程式の解によって具体的に表されることを示した．

© 2019 The Ohio State University We develop a variant of the flow interception problem (FIP) in which it is more desirable for travelers to be intercepted as early as possible in their trips. In addition, we consider flows being intercepted probabilistically instead of the deterministic view of coverage assumed in the FIP literature. We call the proposed model the probabilistic minisum FIP (PMFIP); it involves minimizing the sum of the expected distance that each flow travels until intercepted at a facility among placed facilities. This extension allows us to evaluate the effect of facility location under any given value of the interception probability and to apply the model to a variety of situations. We apply the proposed model to an example network by assuming a hypothetical situation in which people gather at a stadium from various nodes on the network, and receive some goods or services on the way to the stadium. We analyze optimal solutions obtained by varying the number of facilities and interception probability. It is shown that the expected travel distance until intercept is greatly reduced by means of a few optimally located facilities under a moderate interception probability.
