我々は，データセンタネットワーク配線の主流であったマルチモードファイバ（MMF）との高い接続性に重きを置いてポリマー光導波路の研究開発をを進めてきた．その中から考案したモスキート法は，マルチモードのみならずシングルモード導波路，さらには，従来のリソグラフィを応用した手法では作製が困難な導波路素子を容易に作製できることが分かってきた．本稿では，これまでに我々が報告してきたポリマー光導波路のオンボード光配線への適合性について紹介する．

ボード上の自由な光配線パターンの実現に向け，交差構造と曲げ構造両方を併せ持つ，シャフリング構造を有する低損失屈折率分布（GI）型ポリマー光導波路の作製を試みた．初めに，S字曲げ光導波路と交差光導波路をそれぞれ単独に作製することで，曲げ損失と交差損失を個々に見積もり，その結果を基にシャフリング構造を最適設計して作製した．得られたGI型シャフリング光導波路は，損失が交差角度に依存しないため，交差角度を低角にすることで，シャフリング構造に要する面積を低減でき，高密度化にも貢献することが明らかになった．更なる高密度配線化を目指し，最密シャフリング光導波路を作製した結果，GI型コアにて交差角度を30oにすることで，シャフリング損失が0.28 dBという非常に低損失な最密シャフリング光導波路の作製に成功した．

有機―無機ハイブリッド樹脂をソフトリソグラフィ法に適用し，共重合による屈折率分布形成機構を用いてGI型ポリマー光導波路の作製を目指した．得られた光導波路は，従来のアクリル樹脂－低分子ドーパントにて作製されたGI型導波路の場合に見られた伝送特性の経時劣化を抑制でき，また半田リフロー耐熱を有することが実証された．さらに，同じ材料で交差光導波路を作製したところ，一交差あたりGI型が0.0063 dB，SI型が0.0254 dBの損失であると見積もられ， GI型コア特有の強い光の閉じ込め効果による低交差損失化が確認された．

HPC(High-Performance Computer)の高速化及び低消費電力化へ向け，光インターコネクション技術の導入が検討されており，伝送路にポリマー並列光導波路を用いたボード内光配線が注目されている．特に昨今では，ポリマー光導波路にて，同一平面内交差構造やカーブ構造を形成した自由な配線設計が求められる．本検討ではインプリント法を用いてGI型ポリマー交差導波路作製を行った．作製した導波路は交差一箇所あたりの損失値がGI型で0.0074 dB，SI型で0.0319 dBを示し．容易な作製手法であるインプリント法であっても，GI型コア形成による低交差損失化が可能であることを明らかにした．

当研究室で提案してきたMosquito法を用いて，単純な工程で，屈折率分布(GI)型円形コアが高密度に配列された，多層ポリマー光導波路の作製を行った．Mosquito法では，液状のクラッドモノマー中に同じく液状のコアモノマーが吐出されることで多層構造が形成されるため，コア位置ずれが懸念される．本稿では，Mosquito法のニードル走査・コアモノマー吐出過程での，コア・クラッド各モノマー流動の様子を，流体力学に基づくシミュレーションにて算出し，その結果よりニードル走査プログラムを再設定することで，水平・鉛直方向にそれぞれ125 μm間隔でコアが配列された多層導波路を，先行研究に比べざらに高位置精度に作製することに成功した．

本稿では，近年のポリマー光導波路に関する新たなる開発動向を概観するとともに，我々が注力する新たなポリマー光導波路の作製手法「モスキート法」について紹介し，このモスキート法により可能になる，新しい光回路，光配線のあり方について展望する．

希土類イオンを高濃度添加するために株式会社KRIにより開発されたEuropium-Aluminum（Eu-Al）ポリマーコンポジットを用いてポリマー光導波路を作製し，その発光特性を調べた．作製にはディスペンサを用いたMosquito法を採用し，直径109 umの円形コア光導波路を得た．作製された光導波路に対し，532-nm DPSSレーザと617-nm LEDを用いてCo-axial励起を行い，誘導放出光強度を測定した，励起光強度と信号光強度を変化させ効果的に誘導放出を起こすための最適値を検討したところ，微弱信号光と高強度の励起光に対して利得が増大し，導波路長3.7 cmのEu添加光導波路にて最大10.18 dBの光増幅を確認した．

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are known to possess a high saturable absorption property and an ultrafast femto-second recovery time. They have been applied successfully as passive mode-locking devices for ultrashort pulse fiber lasers. In our previous research, a passive mode-locking device using a tapered fiber embedded in a CNT/polymer composite was investigated. However, the structure of tapered fiber has issues: the mechanical strength and the reproducibility are low. In this work, a polymer waveguide passive mode-locking device is fabricated by applying the “Mosquito” method. The device offers several advantages, such as (a) good connectivity with a ring cavity-type laser (b) high mechanical strength.

Embedded optical waveguide technology for optical printed circuit boards (OPCBs) has advanced considerably over the past decade both in terms of materials and achievable waveguide structures. Two distinct classes of planar graded index multimode waveguide have recently emerged based on polymer and glass materials. We report on the suitability of graded index polymer waveguides, fabricated using the Mosquito method, and graded index glass waveguides, fabricated using ion diffusion on thin glass foils, for deployment within future data center environments as part of an optically disaggregated architecture. To this end, we first characterize the wavelength dependent performance of different waveguide types to assess their suitability with respect to two dominant emerging multimode transceiver classes based on directly modulated 850 nm VCSELs and 1310 silicon photonics devices. Furthermore we connect the different waveguide types into an optically disaggregated data storage system and characterize their performance with respect to different common high speed data protocols used at the intra and inter rack level including 10 Gb Ethernet and Serial Attached SCSI.

In this paper, we theoretically analyze the optical loss in multimode waveguides based optical links including optical path conversion via a 45-degree mirror using a ray-trace simulator. We focus on some waveguide structural parameters: the cladding thickness, the core size, and the refractive index of the core and cladding material, and confirm the optimum waveguide parameters for GI circular-core waveguides for realizing low-loss light coupling. In addition, we experimentally investigate the optical loss of GI circular-core polymer optical waveguides fabricated using the Mosquito method. The fabricated waveguide exhibits low optical insertion loss and low inter-channel crosstalk even after mirror fabrication on its one end.

Using the Mosquito method, we fabricate low-loss multimode polymer optical waveguides with graded-index (GI) perfect circular cores for the applications to on-board optical interconnection. Originally we used siloxane based monomers. In this paper, novel organic-inorganic hybrid materials (SUNCONNECT®) are selected to confirm the applicability of wide-range polymers to the Mosquito method. Here, a dip is observed on the upper perimeter of the obtained core cross-sections particularly when using a straight needle with a wall-thickness of more than 75 m. Such a core-shape deformation increases the coupling loss with circular-core optical fibers. So, the flow of core and cladding monomers while dispensing the core with the needle scan is visually observed. It is confirmed that the edge of the straight needle chips off the upper perimeter of the core when the core monomer is dispensed, leading to the dip. Therefore, the straight needle is replaced for a curved one to change the dispensing direction for eliminating the dip. Finally, we successfully demonstrate a 1.65-dB lower loss in a 5-cm long waveguide compared to the one having the core with a dip.

We have reported a fabrication technique for multimode GI circular-core polymer parallel optical waveguides named the “Mosquito method”, and demonstrated not only straight parallel waveguides but also horizontally and vertically curved designs with excellent optical characteristics. For higher density interconnection, multilayer waveguides are expected. The Mosquito method is capable of fabricating such a multilayer waveguide very easily. However, the core position accuracy is a concern because the liquid state monomer flows due to the needle scan for dispensing the cores.
In this paper, we successfully fabricate multilayer GI-circular core polymer parallel optical waveguides by optimizing the needle scan program, and realize a high core-position accuracy with a 125-&#61549;m horizontal pitch. Then, we measure the optical characteristics of these waveguides and discuss the effect of core position error on the loss.

Optical loss of waveguides caused at the connection points with other optical components and the accuracy of the alignment at the connection points are important issues to apply the waveguides for on-board interconnects. In this research, GI-circular-core polymer tapered waveguides are fabricated, in which a taper structure in which the core diameter gradually decreases along with the waveguide axis is formed. The GI circular core tapered polymer waveguides are fabricated using the Mosquito method. The GI cores are formed utilizing the diffusion between the core and cladding monomers. Polymer waveguides with a tapered structure maintaining a circular core cross-section is successfully fabricated. Meanwhile, we discuss the refractive index profile calculated from the diffusion equation: simulated and measured index profiles are compared.

High performance computing (HPC)のさらなる高性能化を見据え，光インターコネクト技術の導入が期待されており，マルチモードポリマー光導波路を用いた光配線板が検討されている．光配線板では，光源としてVCSEL(垂直面発光レーザ)を用いることが想定されているため，光源-導波路間・導波路-受光器間の結合部に，導波路端に形成した45°ミラーによる直角光路変換が必要とされる．この45°ミラーを介した光結合の際に生じる損失は，光配線板上の導波路ベース光リンクを構成する上で懸念事項となっている．本研究では，45°ミラーを形成した光導波路による，オンボード・ボード間光配線のリンクロスを，光線追跡シミュレーションにより計算し，低リンクロスを実現する光導波路の最適構造を議論する．

Using the Mosquito method, the fabrication condition is investigated for multimode optical waveguides with GI circular cores. When a viscous core monomer with a viscosity of 50,000 cPs and higher is dispensed into a cladding monomer layer through a straight needle, a dip is observed in the upper perimeter of the core. Such a core-shape deviation is a concern to degrade the optical properties such as the coupling loss between an optical fiber and the waveguide. In this report, curved needles are introduced in order to form a perfectly circular core, even when a high-viscosity core monomer is dispensed: the dip could be eliminated by varying the dispensing direction of the core monomer. In fact, we evaluate the dependence of the ratio of the vertical to horizontal axes observed in the elliptical cores on the curved angle of needles after experimentally fabricating the waveguides. It is confirmed that an almost circular core shape (without a dip) is formed when the curved angle is in a range of 15-20°. In addition, the optical properties of the waveguides with and without a dip are reported.

To apply to silicon photonics chip packaging, we fabricate a very low-loss single-mode polymer optical waveguide at 1550-nm wavelength using an organic-inorganic hybrid materials. The propagation loss of the single-mode polymer optical waveguide fabricated using the Mosquito method is 0.49 dB/cm at 1550 nm, which is remarkably lower than the loss of polymer optical waveguides composed of conventional organic materials at the same wavelength. Furthermore, for chip-to-chip optical interconnections, the inter-channel crosstalk of a narrow pitch (50-μm pitch) single-mode optical waveguide is evaluated and the measured crosstalk is sufficiently low as -35.0 dB at 1550 nm.

We fabricate a pitch conversion structure in multimode polymer optical waveguides for high density interconnects on printed circuit boards (PCBs). In order to connect with a multimode fiber (MMF) ribbon which has a 250-um pitch, we design the waveguide to have a 250-um pitch on one end, while a 125-um pitch on the other end. A 12-ch. multimode pitch-conversion polymer optical waveguides with 50-um diameter graded-index (GI) circular cores are experimentally fabricated using the Mosquito method. The Mosquito method has a potential for drawing a wide variety of wiring patterns. In the fabricated waveguide, excess loss is not necessarily observed due to the bending structure. Finally, we investigate how to improve the positional accuracy of cores. Then, it is confirmed when the waveguide is connected to a 12-ch. MMF ribbon with 250-um pitch, a good optical coupling is achieved for most of the cores.

We theoretically estimate the inter-channel crosstalk in densely aligned multimode polymer parallel optical waveguides using a beam propagation method, and compare the results of GI-core waveguide with those of conventional step-index (SI)-core counterpart. We simulate the crosstalk in bridged core waveguides, which is sometimes observed in waveguides fabricated by the imprinting method. The inter-channel crosstalk in SI-core waveguide increases from -25 dB to -4 dB with increasing the bridge thickness. Contrastingly, the worst crosstalk in GI-core is as low as -15 dB despite bridged structure. Thus, the imprinting method should be utilized for GI-core waveguides: the inter-channel crosstalk is un-problematic.

For fabricating graded index (GI)-core polymer waveguides, we focus on a method utilizing a micro-dispenser named the Mosquito-method, which enables to form circular-shaped cores directly on board using high heat-resistant silicone polymers. Using the Mosquito method, we successfully control the inter-core pitch of 8 channels in a fabricated waveguide to 249 ± 4.1 μm by paying attention to the needle scanning procedure. Furthermore, we demonstrate a 4 × 10 Gbps transmission over GI-circular core polymer waveguide, particularly utilizing the multiple cores accurately position controlled for the first time to the best of our knowledge.

We improve the fabrication procedure of our previous imprint method to obtain low-loss and low-crosstalk graded-index (GI)-core waveguides: particularly focus on eliminating the bridged structure sometimes observed in polymer waveguides fabricated using the imprint method. We experimentally demonstrate that the GI-core waveguides show lower loss and lower crosstalk than SI-core waveguide fabricated using the same material by the same method, which is even if a slight bridged structure remains. Furthermore, by applying this method to fabricate perpendicularly crossed waveguides, we also demonstrate that GI-core waveguides exhibit significant loss reduction due to the crossings.

We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that graded-index (GI) core polymer optical waveguides are a promising component realizing high-bandwidth-density on-board interconnects. As a fabrication method of GI circular core polymer optical waveguides, we introduce the Mosquito method utilizing a micro-dispenser. The Mosquito method is capable of accurately controlling the core diameter and inter-core pitch. We also demonstrate that the GI-core polymer waveguides enable remarkably low loss waveguide circuits involving waveguide crossings in a mono layer. We show an alternative technique to realize the low-loss GI-core crossed waveguide: the Photo-addressing method which is developed by Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd.

これまで我々は屈折率分布(GI)型光導波路のコア部への信号光の強い閉じ込め効果に着目し，安価でGI型ポリマー光導波路を容易に得られる方法としてインプリント法を考案し，実際にGI型コアポリマー光導波路の作製を試みてきた．本研究ではインプリント法の作製方法を詳細に検討し，インプリント法でしばしば問題となる残膜による並列コア間の架橋構造をほぼ除去することで，従来の作製方法と比べ低損失・低クロストークの導波路を得ることに成功した．さらに，インプリント法を用いて，直角交差導波路作製を試み，GI型導波路が，既存の階段屈折率(SI)型導波路に比べて，交差による損失の大幅な低減を可能にすることを実証した．

本報告では光配線板応用が期待されるマルチモードポリマー光導波路に着目し，ビーム伝搬法を用いてチャネル間クロストークの理論的見積もりを行う．このポリマー光導波路の安価な作製方法の1つとして期待されるインプリント法が挙げられるが，インプリント法では，僅かな厚みではあるものの薄いコア層膜が残る問題があり，この残膜が，並列するコア間を架橋し，更なるクロストークの増大が懸念されている．本解析では，コアが架橋した構造を想定し，残膜の厚みがクロストークに及ぼす影響を，Step-Index(SI)型コア，Graded-Index(GI)型コアに対して，定量的に解析し，GI型コアの有意性を示す．

25 Gbpsを超える伝送速度にて,ボード上に光配線を実現するためには,ポリマー光導波路には,今後さらなる高速・高密度配線化が求められ,加えて,光導波路リンク全体として,さらなる低消費電力化へむけた技術の進展が求められる.GI型ポリマー光導波路は,オフボード配線に用いられているGI型MMFと類似の構造をもつことから,分散,接続損失,高密度配線性などの点で,優れた特性を発現することがわかってきた.さらに,複数チャネルによる自由な光回路構成に必要とされる交差導波路についても,GI型コアの導入により,低損失化されることを実証した.このGI型コアポリマー光導波路を用いた高速・高密度オンボード光インターコネクトの実現を期待する.

本研究ではポリマー導波路－MMFにより構成される光リンクに対して，異なる構造を有する導波路とMMFとの接続損失評価を行った．その結果，従来の段階屈折率(SI)型矩形コアを有するポリマー光導波路については，MMFのコア径(50 &#61549;m)よりも小コアサイズ(~35 &#61549;m)化することで，導波路－MMF，MMF－導波路いずれの接続損失も低減されるという結果を実験的・理論的に確認した．一方で，当研究室にて，これまで検討を進めてきた屈折率分布(GI)型ポリマー光導波路は，コア形状(矩形・円形)に関わらずSI型矩形コア導波路に比べMMFとの接続損失を低減でき，さらにコアサイズ依存性が小さく，ミスアラインメントトレランスも大きいという，優れた接続特性を示すことを明らかにした．

In this paper, we both theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that 90 % lower optical loss is realized with multimode crossed polymer optical waveguides by introducing graded-index (GI) cores, compared to conventional step-index (SI) core counterparts. First, the light leakage losses of crossed waveguides with SI and GI cores are simulated using a ray-trace simulation. Then, we show that a drastic reduction of the leakage loss is achieved in the GI-core crossed waveguide (only a loss of 0.095 dB for 50 perpendicular crossings), which is less than one-tenth of the leakage loss in the SI-core crossed waveguide (2.5-dB loss for the same 50 perpendicular crossings). Furthermore, even in the GI-core crossed waveguide with a 30-degree crossing angle, the leakage-loss is calculated to be only 0.009 dB/crossing, while 0.086 dB/crossing for the SI-core. This low loss of GI crossed core waveguides stems from the tight optical-field confinement in GI cores.
Next, we confirm the validity of the calculated results. We fabricate the GI-core polymer crossed waveguides (multiple crossings) using the photo-address method for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In this method, we use a polynorbornene resin whose refractive index could be controlled by intensity variations of UV exposure during the curing process. The experimental results in the crossed waveguide with GI profile show a very good agreement with the calculated result.

We introduce a simple photo-mask-free fabrication method of multimode polymer optical waveguides (PPOWs): “the Mosquito method” that utilizes a micro-dispenser. In the Mosquito method, a viscous monomer for cores is directly dispensed from a thin needle into a cladding monomer that is coated on a substrate. Because of the monomer diffusion, graded-index (GI) circular core is formed. By adjusting several parameters to control the core shape and diameter, a 15-cm long, 40-m core diameter, with 125-m pitch GI-circular core PPOWs (12 channels) are successfully fabricated by the Mosquito method. We experimentally demonstrate superior optical properties of the circular GI-core polymer waveguides: connection loss with GI multimode fibers, inter-channel crosstalk, etc. to SI-square core polymer waveguides composed of the same silicone polymer materials.
Furthermore, we fabricate GI-core PPOW circuits in which perpendicularly curved waveguides are involved by applying the Mosquito method. The curved PPOWs with a 250-m pitch are obtained successfully and the curve-radius is varied from 3 mm to 20 mm by adjusting the scanning program of the needle. The insertion loss of the curved waveguides is measured for evaluating the bending losses. The waveguide with lager curve-radius shows lower insertion loss, namely low bending loss. Additionally, it is experimentally confirmed that the curved waveguides with higher numerical aperture (NA = 0.30) fabricated utilizing a different silicone resin for the cladding exhibit a bending loss as low as 0.5 dB even under 3-mm curve radius. The Mosquito-method would be a promising method for realizing high-speed and high-density on-board optical interconnects.

Optical printed circuit boards (OPCBs) on which multimode polymer optical waveguides are integrated have been strongly anticipated in order to realize high-speed on-board interconnects. On the OPCBs, the surface mount technique is applied to laser and photo-diode (PD) chips, and the output/input light from/to those devices needs to be perpendicularly bent to utilize the waveguides on the OPCB. Current trends are in perpendicular light path conversion by 45-degree reflector mirrors formed at waveguide ends. By utilizing a ray-trace simulation program developed in this research, the optical loss at the reflector mirrors formed on both SI and GI waveguides is calculated.

As an innovative fabrication method of multimode polymer parallel optical waveguides (PPOWs) with graded-index (GI) circular cores, “the Mosquito method” that utilizes a micro-dispenser is introduced. We experimentally demonstrate that a 5-cm long, 40-m core diameter, and 250-m pitch GI-circular core PPOWs (12 channels) fabricated by the Mosquito method show an inter-channel crosstalk of approximately -50 dB, which is almost 10 dB lower than that of a typical SI PPOW with square cores. Furthermore, we fabricate GI-core PPOW circuits in which curved and 3-dimensional waveguides are involved by applying the Mosquito method.

We propose to apply graded-index (GI) cores into crossed multimode waveguides. We already confirmed the strong optical confinement effect of GI cores, and thus, GI cores enable to decrease the light leakage at the crossed area, compared to the step-index (SI)-core crossed waveguides. In fact, we calculate the light propagation loss in crossed waveguides with SI and GI cores by developing a ray tracing simulation program. It is found that the GI core shows remarkably lower waveguide loss (0.19 dB for 50-perpendicular crosses) than those of SI core (3.7 dB for the same crossings).

HPCのさらなる高性能化を見据え,低消費電力,高速・高密度伝送を実現できる光インターコネクト技術の導入が期待されており,多モードポリマー光導波路を用いた光配線板が検討されている.本研究では,オンボード+ボード間インターコネクトを想定した導波路ベースのリンクに対して,異なる伝送路感の接続損失に着目した.その結果,従来の研究開発対象であったSI型矩形コアポリマー光導波路においては,高密度配線化に向けた小コアサイズ化が,ボード間を接続するGI-MMFとの接続特性を改善させる効果が確認された.また,我々が検討してきたGI型円形コア導波路は,小コア径化した場合に対してもSI型コア導波路に比べて,接続特性に優れる結果が得られた.

Currently, board-level optical interconnection is anticipated as a promising technology to realize high-performance computing systems with high speed and low-power consumption. Hence, optical printed circuit boards (OPCBs) integrated with polymer optical waveguides are drawing much attention, in particular, intensive efforts have been made for developing crossed waveguides for solving the problem of the space limit on OPCBs. In general, those crossed waveguides have been composed of step index (SI) type core. However, the excess optical loss at the crossed area due to the light leakage has been crucial.
In this paper, we propose to apply graded-index (GI) cores to such a crossed waveguide. We already confirmed the strong optical confinement effect of GI core, thus it is expected that GI core enables to decrease the light leakage at the crossed area, compared to the SI-core crossed waveguides. In fact, we calculate the light propagation loss in crossed waveguides with SI and GI cores by developing a ray tracing simulation program. It is found that GI core shows remarkably lower waveguide loss (0.19 dB for 50-perpendicular crosses) than those of SI core (3.7 dB).

Optical interconnect has been highly anticipated as a promising technology to realize high-performance computing systems (HPCs) with high-speed and low-power-consumption. For the data transmission between boards and between racks in current HPCs, multimode optical fiber (MMF) based links have been already installed. The next technical issue is how to realize on-board optical interconnects, by which high-speed optical signals are distributed closer to the processing chips on-board. In this paper, we focus on polymer optical waveguide based links for on-board interconnects, and discuss their link power budget in order to support a data rate of 20 Gb/s and beyond. Specifically, we demonstrate that GI-core polymer waveguides we have been promoting exhibit a link power budget advantage of 3 dB and higher compared to conventional SI-core polymer waveguides.

　View Summary

The maximum channel alignment density of multimode
optical waveguides is presented for the first time from the
viewpoint of inter-channel crosstalk. The inter-channel
crosstalk is theoretically estimated by taking into account the
two possible origins (mode coupling and mode conversion) of
crosstalk we have focused. Then, we show the advantage of
GI cores for reducing the “crosstalk due to mode coupling” by
numerically solving the coupling length of each mode. From
the viewpoint of mode coupling, we can say the minimum
inter-core space should be 10 m for GI-core waveguides,
while more space is required for SI cores in order to maintain
the crosstalk less than -20 dB.

We present on-board fabrications for densely-aligned graded-index (GI) multiple-core polymer optical waveguides utilizing soft-lithography or dispensers, in order to realize the board-level optical interconnections with these waveguides. We experimentally confirm that near parabolic refractive index profiles are formed in the cores of newly developed 20-cm long waveguides (40 um x 40 um size at 75-um pitch). We also use a copolymer for forming the GI profile, and then, confirm the high-temperature stability of the parabolic index profile compared to the one formed with a doped polymer. Finally, we discuss about the crosstalk property of the fabricated waveguides.

We newly develop W-shaped graded-index core polymer optical waveguide which performs high bandwidth and low crosstalk. Although this is capable of being used in high performance computers, we propose to clarify the inter-channel crosstalk results from mode conversion more significantly. In this paper, first we demonstrate the experiment results, and then we apply the ray-trace simulation to show the ray trajectories, length dependent near field patterns, and crosstalk values. Furthermore, we visually and numerically compare the performance between the conventional step-index and our graded-index type counterparts. These investigations prove that W-shaped and graded-index core waveguides have high potential to be used in high-speed optical interconnections.
