本試論では，シェイクスピア作『リア王』（1605年頃）において，「空間」が他の悲劇に比してとりわけ強く意識されていること，この場合の「空間」とは劇世界の物理的空間としての自然環境であると同時に，神々を含めた世界像，そしてそれら全てを成立させている宇宙的原理も意味することを述べる．すなわち，『リア王』の中の劇人物にとって，空間はシェイクスピアが『ハムレット』（Hamlet, Prince of Demark）において，演劇の目的を「自然に対して鏡を掲げること」（“the mirror up to nature,” 3.2.18-19）と述べる時の「自然」を指し，それは，我々全てを網羅する「家」（オイコス）を語源に持つ「エコロジー」の最も広い意味と言ってもいい．言い換えれば，『リア王』に見られる空間意識は，“人間の行動や精神が空間としての具体的世界と繋がっており，お互いに影響し合っている”というエコクリティシズムの前提（Glotfelty, xix）と共通の土台を持っている．シェイクスピア批評においては，Green Shakespeare: from Ecopolitics to Ecocriticism (2006), Shakespeare and Ecology (2015)といったエコロジー批評に特化したシェイクスピア論集が次々と編まれており，シェイクスピアの作品と場所性を強く意識した論考が多く生まれているが，本論で言う空間意識も場所性の別表現と言って良いのではないか．シェイクスピアは，自らが活動をした同時代のイングランドを題材にした作品を１作品しか残さなかったにも拘わらず，『リア王』の劇世界においては，人間とそれを取り巻く世界との相互関係を描き出していることを試論として述べたい．

This paper will be composed of two distinct sections, the first dealing with the historical and contextual background of the word Butoh, and the second with the results of a survey research. The survey aimed to extract the images that people have toward Butoh by determining the descriptive adjectives associated with it in people’s minds. We chose as our instrument an online survey platform, and asked the participants to associate certain adjectives with the image that they have of the word “Butoh.” The researchers provided 33 adjectives, with an additional open-answer field allowing the participants to add new words.
For this research, it was crucial that the participants have an “image,” be it subjective or objective, toward the word “Butoh,” requiring them to have a certain level of knowledge of the concept. To fulfill this criterion, we carried out the survey mainly at the International Federation of Theatre Research (IFTR) annual conference held in Stockholm, Sweden, in the summer of 2016, targeting theater and performance scholars and practitioners who belonged to the IFTR. The use of an online form and the format of a self-administered questionnaire have further limited the respondents to those who have interest toward Butoh and related research and activities. The respondents were able to access and answer the questionnaire at will using the URL and its QR code that we distributed in paper and online format, accessible both from computers and mobile devices. Although we must acknowledge that the extent of this research is limited, with 37 participants and 34 qualified responses, even with the limited number of subjects, we were able to extract certain patterns that will be examined in the second half of this paper.

「舞踏」は、モダンダンスを学び、西洋の美術、音楽、思想などに強い影響を受けた土方をパイオニアとして誕生した踊りであるが、その一方、特に1972年の『四季のための二十七晩』以来、土方の生誕地である東北地方の土着的色彩が意識的に取り入れられた。この意味で舞踏は、普遍性と土着性の共存という二重性を本来的に内包していると言っていい。また、舞踏は、当初は東京に集まった現代芸術家たちにより、現代芸術に関心を持つ観客を対象とした閉じた表現様式と見えながら、日本国内のみならず海外にも広く「散らされて」いった。この拡張・拡散は現在でも続いている。山形県鶴岡市に稽古場を設け、「北方」舞踏派と名付けることによって、ビショップは、舞踏の二つの重層性を実践において思考／試行したのである。この対話は、草創期の活動に携わった舞踏家の言葉を一次資料として記録するとともに、特に北方舞踏派の活動を中心に舞踏が持つ重層的性格を探るためのものである。

This article explores the possibility of Butoh in the “Hijikata’s Earthen Statue Project” with the notion that Butoh is not limited to the human-dancer genre and has transmittable and spreadable natures. Taking Hijikata’s most important work, Hosotan (1972) with such dark images as poverty, disease and death in Tôhoku region, our problem is how we could represent without human-dancer the connotation that Hijikata’s work originally had. Inspired by the tradition of self-mummifying Buddhist monks, it was produced to objectify Hijikata’s main concept of Suijakutai, corpus moriens, by dripping water on a life-size earthen statue of Hijikata for four days, by which time the statue had almost completely deteriorated. The whole process of the project is transmitted for the purpose that the audience as much as possible might participate in the ultra-long performance provided in remote place. In this paper, the details will be introduced and its significance evaluated.
