    海外投資の収益率と国内投資の収益率との意味ある比較がこれまでなされてこなかったことを反省し、１９世紀後半のロンドン市場で取引されていたデヴォン・コーンウォールの非鉄金属鉱山会社のMining Journal誌掲載の株価変動表と筆者が独自に作成した各会社の配当表を基礎として、各会社の株式投資に対する内部収益率を計算した。そして、不安定ではあるが時として巨額にのぼる売買益の獲得が安定した事業配当確保よりも魅力的になっていた事実を発見した。
