    Medieval literary works popular in manuscript culture were not necessarily inherited by the print culture. Then which texts were chosen to be published by the first generation of printers in England? This paper offers a preliminary overview of the reception of medieval literature in England in the transitional period from manuscript to print by comparing the list of publications of William Caxton, England's first printer, and that of his follower Wynkyn de Worde. While Caxton's publishing style was largely influenced by the manuscript tradition and distinguished by his translation (especially from French prose romance), de Worde seems to have been more active than his master in not only expanding the market for religious works and romance (both prose and verse) but also cultivating a relationship with his contemporary authors.

    The online version of the English Short Title Catalogue (ESTC) is a database that is designed to include bibliographic records of surviving copies of letterpress produced in Great Britain or any of its dependencies worldwide from 1473–1800 (http://estc.bl.uk). One of this online catalogue's advantages is that it has enhanced the surviving copies' information. A sample search of this online catalogue, however, soon reveals that it contains few entries detailing holdings in Japanese libraries. This is simply because no systematic research has examined Japanese holdings.To register Japanese entries in the ESTC, the present writer started to compile a list of early English printed books housed in Japanese libraries, with a special focus on books dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. Of the various copies that the writer has found so far, this paper sheds light on a unique collection, housed in the University of Tokyo Library, which the British government donated to support the Tokyo UL's restoration, which suffered great damage from the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. This paper's appendix provides the list of all the 16th-century copies of this special collection, some of which have not been recorded before.研究ノート

    "This paper is a reprint of the catalogue prepared for the exhibition 'D. S. Brewer Mythography Collection', held at the Hiyoshi Media Centre from 24–28 November 2009 on the occasion of the 25th congress of the Japan Society for Medieval English Studies. In the spring of 2009 Toshiyuki Takamiya, Professor Emeritus at Keio University, donated the D. S. Brewer Mythography Collection to the Keio University Library. This collection was formed by the late Derek Stanley Brewer (1923–2008), a leading expert on Geoffrey Chaucer, the founder of academic publisher D. S. Brewer (now Boydell Brewer); Brewer also served as Master of the Emmanuel College from 1977–1990. The Mythography Collection comprises 190 items, including 16th–20th-century books mostly on Greek mythology and Brewer's typescripts of lectures, research notes and slides. Scholars and students from the Department of English examined the whole collection and recorded it bibliographically during the summer of 2009. On the basis of their research results, 10 representative items were chosen and displayed at the exhibition. They include Boccacio's Genealogie (Paris, 1511); Psd-Apollodorus's Bibliotheca (Rome, 1555); Vincenzo Cartari's Les images de dievx des anciens (Lyons, 1581); Natalis Conti's Mythologiae (Padua,1616); Alexander Ross's Mystagogus poeticus (London, 1648); Lactantius's Divinarum institutionum libri VII (Antwerp, 1570); Gerardus Vossius's De theologia gentili... (Amsterdam, 1668); Thomas Munckerus's (ed.) Mythographi latini (Amsterdam, 1681); Francesco Bardi's Ovidio istorico, politico, morale (Venice, 1696); and D. S. Brewer's typescript.

    本研究は、ギリシア・ローマ文学のナラティヴ研究を牽引する海外共同研究者と連携し、中世英文学における古典期に源泉を持つ聖人伝の伝播と受容に関する共同研究を行う。特に世俗の婚姻をした聖女に焦点を当て、古典期の聖女伝と中世英文学作品の比較や、海外研究機関での写本調査に基づく伝播状況の分析から、古典期の聖女伝が中世キリスト教世界においていかなる変容を経て受容されたのかについて、その背景にある婚姻をめぐる社会的および宗教的変化を踏まえて解明する。
    本研究は、古典期に起源を持つ婚姻した聖女の伝説が、中世キリスト教世界においてどのように受容され、変容していったのかを、文学作品の分析と写本の伝播状況の両側面から明らかにしようとするものである。中世ヨーロッパにおける婚姻制度は、古典期とは異なる宗教的意義と社会的制約を伴っており、古典期に成立した聖女伝が、とりわけ中世イングランドにおいていかなる形で再解釈され、新たな文脈のもとで意味づけられていったのかを探ることが本研究の目的である。
    2024年度は、研究の基盤構築に重点的に取り組み、まず分析対象作品の選定を行った。その結果、婚姻と貞節の両立を前面に打ち出す聖セシリア伝と、婚姻関係における姦淫の罪とその悔悛を描く聖テオドラ伝という、性格の異なる二つの聖女伝を出発点とする方針が確定した。これにより、中世的婚姻観に対する宗教的・文化的応答に注目しつつ、聖性の再構築とそのナラティヴの変容過程を比較・検討する体制が整えられた。
    あわせて、古典ギリシア語、古典ラテン語、中世ラテン語、古英語、中英語で記された聖人伝および典礼関連文書を対象に、関連作品の書誌情報を収集・整理した。これにより今後の個別分析に必要な一次資料群の全体像を把握する基礎が築かれた。また、先行研究の文献レビューを開始し、従来の議論の整理と併せて本研究が取りうる方法論について検討を行い、研究課題の学術的意義と本研究の独自性を再確認することができた。これにより、今後の詳細なテクスト分析および国際的共同研究の展開に向けた研究基盤が整えられた。
    本研究課題は、当初の計画に基づき概ね順調に進展している。2024年度には、共同研究の始動に際し、研究代表者、若手研究者、研究分担者および海外共同研究者（ヘント大学所属）とのオンライン・ミーティングを10月に開催し、分析対象作品の具体化と研究方針ならびに各自の役割分担を確認した。さらに研究代表者は、2025年3月にヘント大学を訪問し、同大学に設置された研究拠点‘Novel Saints: Ancient Fiction and Hagiography Research Centre’において、今後の共同研究の進め方に関する協議を行った。また、現地で開催された国際シンポジウムにも参加し、国際的に活躍する欧英の古典研究者たちとの学術交流を深めた。若手研究者は、中英語および古典語の聖人伝を比較研究するための資料収集を進め、研究分担者は中英語写本調査に向けた基礎的準備を行ったうえで、同年3月にケンブリッジ大学図書館等での現地調査を実施した。以上の活動により、研究基盤の構築と今後の展開に向けた体制整備が計画通りに進められている。
    研究実施計画に掲げた三つの分析視点のうち、研究二年目にあたる2025年度は、（1）中英語聖人伝の分析を重点的に進めつつ、（2）作品に関するコンテクスト研究にも着手する。具体的には、中英語版セシリア伝およびテオドラ伝におけるナラティヴ構造や修辞的特徴を精査し、古典期の原典作品との比較分析に向けた準備を進める。また両者の聖女伝が成立・流通した宗教的・社会的背景について、2024年度に収集を始めた二次資料をもとに理解を深める。研究遂行上の課題としては、写本などの一次資料への継続的なアクセスの確保が挙げられるが、現地調査の実施に加えて、近年充実してきたデジタルアーカイブの活用により補完する。あわせて海外共同研究者との連携を継続・強化し、学際的な分析を展開させる。また2025年秋に予定されているユトレヒト大学での招待講演や、12月開催予定の日本中世英語英文学会ポスターセッション等への応募も行い、具体的な研究成果の発信も視野に入れつつ研究の推進に努める。

  • Textual Analysis and Scholarly Editing of the 'Sanctorale' in Caxton's Golden Legend

    本研究は、15世紀末にイングランドでウィリアム・キャクストンが出版した『黄金伝説』（ヤコブス・ド・ウォラギネ編纂）について、「翻訳」、「編集」、「印刷」の観点から分析し、その成果をもとに「聖人伝の部」の前半部を校訂版として発表することを目指している。2年目に当たる2023年度には、英訳版とフランス語版の底本の転写作業とそれらのテクスト校合、またキャクストン版の複数の現存本の校合を前年度に続けて行った。
    研究代表者は、英訳原典であるキャクストン版の底本と定めた、1st settingのケンブリッジ大学図書館所蔵本を、前年度に取得したデジタル画像を用いて、2nd settingのグラスゴー大学図書館との比較校合を引き続き進めた。2023年度に完了にまでは至っていないが、予定していた作業は終えることができ、2024年度前半には終える見通しが立ってきた。全ページを頁ごとに比較校合する作業はこれまでの先行研究でもなされたことがなく、1st settingと2nd setting の本文上の違いは未解明であったが、2023年度の研究によってその様相が見えてきた。ただしデジタル画像だけでは確認できない箇所もあるため、夏の長期休暇を活用して現地での資料確認も行った。また研究協力者の協力を得て、校訂テクストの土台作りと附注ならびにグロッサーリー作成も進めることができた。
    研究分担者は、仏語原典の底本として使用する、15世紀刊本 『黄金伝説』の大英図書館本の転写作業を引き続き進めた。2023年度はMaurice and Companionsまでの転写を完了させ、進捗状況は順調である。

    The purpose of this study was to clarify changing expectations of "how a book should look like" in early European print culture. The appearance and physical characteristics of the Bibles printed before 1545 were examined in detail. The results showed the various changes in their physical characteristics and the different aspects of the printer's skill and ingenuity behind them. It became clear that printers were trying to meet readers' expectations for the "look" of the Bible, while at the same time taking economic efficiency into account, and that some printers emphasized this as a point of attraction. However, there were some differences between places of printing, printers, and languages.

    This project aimed to produce the first two volumes of an edition of Caxton's _Golden Legend_, which is one of the biggest printing achievements of Caxton. We submitted this work to the Early English Text Society (based in Oxford, UK) July 2019, which was accepted smoothly. Preparations of the first volume (due July 2020) has been in progress at Oxford University Press.
    In the course of the five years of this Kaken project, we have endeavoured to publish our research results in books and at international conferences, through which we have established wide relationships with various expert scholars internationally. Thus, I was able to invite four distinguished Uk and Australian editorial scholars to an international symposium: Editing and the Interpretation of Texts (organized by the present author) for a special symposium at the annual conference of the Japan Society for Medieval English Studies and a lecture meeting at Kyoto University (co-sponsored by Kyoto University).
