Nursing x FAB: Development of Self-Help Tools Through the Use of 3D Printers
International Conference on Digital Fabrication
2016/03/05

Self-help tools can be useful where sickness brings about physical problems. Since the daily problems of each patient are individual, it is important that the self-help tools also be individual.
However in most cases, available tools are standardized.
In this research, we ran trials for developing the two self-help tools listed below using a 3D printer, for a patient suffering from C6 spinal injury. Through these trials, we investigated the required knowledge set the development team must have as well as what information the team must extract from the client in order to create a useful self-help tool.

Nursing x Fab: The concept and the potential of digital fabrication in nursing
International Conference on Digital Fabrication
2016/03/05

Our research aims to show the potential of applying digital fabrication to the creation of equipment for nursing. We performed a hearing survey toward home visiting nurses to know what kinds of effort are done in the field of home nursing and what kinds of equipment are needed to fit the individual patient’s situation. Based on the hearing survey we developed two kinds of prototypes: a suction training tool and a toilet support training tool.
Through the prototypes’ development process, we investigated possible solutions for the issues above. 1) Digital fabrication can digitalize efforts of nursing, which means the micro inventions in home nursing can be shared, re-used and improved by interested parties worldwide through
the Internet. 2) Digital fabrication can contribute to formalizing the process of development of nursing equipment so that the safety and the demarcation point of responsibility can be clarified.

Data portability
in mHealth — Can we retain our life log when changing apps, devices, or mobile platforms?
The Annual Meeting of American Public Health Association in 2015 (APHA2015)
2015/11/04

Objective: This study examined functions of data portability in health apps for Android and iOS.

Results: 19 of 40 Android and iOS apps are determined to be data exportable, and no significant differences are found between these two platforms. Of 15 apps that export data to files, 8 are expressed in a table using the comma separated value (CSV) format and do not require format processing; 4 employ the CSV format but are not formatted in a plain table and require some format processing; and 3 do not use the CSV format, and to extract data from them requires advanced data manipulation skills. 1 Android and 5 iOS apps support integrated health data management functions, e.g., Apple Healthkit and Google Fit.

Conclusion: Our research clarifies that more than half of the selected apps do not support data portability or provide only token data portability, which is not immediately evident before initial selection. It also suggests that the data integration function for both platforms (Apple Healthkit and Google Fit) have only a limited effect on data portability.

Knowing is Not Doing: Elderly People’s Health Information Search Habits in Japan
Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing 2011
2011/11/10

The authors performed a questionnaire to identify Japanese elderlies' awareness of health-related online information and an experiment to monitor their actual behavior. Two trends are indicated: 1) the criteria for choosing favorites differ from trustworthiness criteria, and 2) participants tend to ignore or misunderstand the information provider. There is a dissociation between the elderly information seekers’ awareness and actual behavior about health-related online information search.

Design of support tools for Internet broadcasting
電子情報通信学会 第7回福祉情報工学研究会
2001/05

Internet Radio has been an empowerment tool for disseminating voices of the people. As the available bandwidth for each listener increases by the popularization of broadband Internet connectivity, more people will involve as Internet broadcasters as well as the listeners. In this paper we propose a framework of support tools for making programs of Internet Radio, for people who do not have previous experiences. The framework is focused on visually-impaired and elderly individuals to support making their own communities by themselves.
